I grew up here and I go to university here, and I tend to look at foreign affairs through an American lens. I realize that a large portion of our readers are not American, so this post may not be as relevant or apply to you. However, the American ambassador to Russia was recently in the news and I thought it would be interesting to write about him. I present, without further ado, a post about ambassadors and other diplomatic-related vocabulary.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The new United States ambassador to Russia is named Michael McFaul (his name is transliterated into Cyrillic as <strong>\u00ab\u041c\u0430\u0439\u043a\u043b \u041c\u0430\u043a\u0444\u043e\u043b\u00bb<\/strong>). <strong>\u00ab\u041e\u043d \u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043b \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043e\u0440\u043e\u043c \u0432 \u0421\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044d<\/span>\u043d\u0444\u043e\u0440\u0434\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043c \u0443\u043d\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [He worked as a professor at Stanford University]. As ambassador he lives in <strong>\u00ab\u0421\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043e-\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0443\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [Spaso House], the official residence of the United States ambassador in Russia.<\/p>\n<p>There has been controversy ever since McFaul arrived in Russia because he met with some opposition leaders. Plus, he was involved in the <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0437\u0430\u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [reset] policy with Russia that does not seem to have been entirely successful. McFaul does not speak Russian as well as his <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [predecessor], John Beyrle. <strong>\u00ab\u0411\u0430\u0439\u0435\u0440\u043b\u0438 \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e \u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442 \u043f\u043e-\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Beyrle speaks Russian fluently]. (Seriously, Beyrle&#8217;s Russian is amazing. Listen to an interview with him sometime.)<\/p>\n<p>Some more general vocabulary: in Russian, ambassador is <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong>, so it is pretty logical that <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> is embassy. <strong>\u00ab\u041a\u043e\u043d\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> is consulate. (And remember, the two are different! In general, embassies are usually larger and are led by an ambassador, whereas consulates are led by a <strong>\u00ab\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u0443\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [consul].) <strong>\u00ab\u0414\u0438\u043f\u043b\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [diplomat] is nice and easy to remember. <strong>\u00ab\u041f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [passport] and <strong>\u00ab\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [visa] are also nice cognates.<\/p>\n<p><em>What do you think of the new United States ambassador?
