I left off on the part where <strong>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0431\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> (the newlyweds) leave the <strong>\u0417\u0410\u0413\u0421 <\/strong>(registry office). In case you missed the first part, it is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/how-to-celebrate-wedding-russian-style\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0Somehow I completely forgot to mention <strong>\u043e\u0431\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0446\u0430\u043c\u0438<\/strong> (exchanging the rings) that happens during the ceremony. Wedding bands in Russia are called <strong>\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0446\u0430<\/strong> and are worn on <strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437\u044b\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u0446 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0440\u0443\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span><\/strong> (ring finger on the right hand, lit: the no-name finger).<\/p>\n<p>This fact is not nearly as interesting, in my opinion, as the fact that the word <strong>\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (ringed) describes both a married man (for a married woman it\u2019s <strong>\u043e\u043a\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f<\/strong>) and a banded bird or animal. Note that this word uses <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433<\/strong> (passive voice) and implies that the subject gets marked and kept track of.<\/p>\n<p>But back to the <strong>\u0417\u0410\u0413\u0421<\/strong>! As <strong>\u043c\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> (newlyweds; lit: the young ones) return to their <strong>\u043a\u043e\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0436<\/strong> (motorcade) they are whisked away for <strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (a walk). This is a well-established tradition and is a way to <strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u043b\u044e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043c\u043e\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0435\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043a\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to see and be seen). Every town has a place or several that are traditional for such walks.<\/p>\n<p>In my hometown of Volgograd, for example, it\u2019s the Great Patriotic War memorial on the Mamayev Hill. If this strikes you as a strange choice of venue, I hasten to add that many couples visit such memorials not just for the obligatory <strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0431\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0444\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0444\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (wedding pictures) or for showing off, but to pay their genuine respects and <strong>\u0432\u043e\u0437\u043b\u043e\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0446\u0432\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (lay flowers) honoring the war sacrifices. Besides, since Soviet times, there were very few beautiful and well-kept public spaces in Russia other than the memorials.<\/p>\n<p>Other destinations for <strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0431\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (wedding walk) include park with scenic views, historic buildings, or places that are meaningful to the couple, for example <strong>\u0444\u043e\u043d\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d, <\/strong><strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u043b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0433\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430\u0437\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432\u0438\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (a fountain near which the couple met for their first date).<\/p>\n<p>If you are visiting Russia and want to see a Russian wedding, head over to a park or a memorial in the city center and, chances are, you will see not one, but several wedding parties. This is true even if it\u2019s cold and snowy outside. The bride will still be in her lacy dress and dainty shoes and her maids will be in (usually very short and open) dresses and high heels walking gingerly over <strong>\u043e\u0431\u043b\u0435\u0434\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0442\u0443<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440<\/strong> (ice-covered sidewalk), posing for pictures.<\/p>\n<p>And then it\u2019s time for <strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0431\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435<\/strong> also known as <strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0431\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0430\u043d\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> (wedding feast or banquet). It used to be done at home and all the dishes were cooked at home as well. Since Soviet apartments were quite small and the number of <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/strong> (invited guests) quite large, the merriment would oftentimes spill into <strong>\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0447\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u043e\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (a landing between the floors in apartment buildings) or into the courtyards. Then it became truly a communal affair as neighbors joined in, frequently bringing food and drinks to the table.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays celebrating in one\u2019s house is a lot less common. Instead, a banquet usually takes place at a restaurant or a caf\u00e9. In some cases, a river cruise is booked, conveniently combining <strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (a walk) and <strong>\u0437\u0430\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435<\/strong> (a feast). Either way, such <strong>\u0437\u0430\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435<\/strong>, with lots of food and plenty of alcohol, can go on for hours. If it\u2019s held at a private house, it can go on for a whole day or longer.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, Russians have the tradition of shouting <strong>\u0413<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044c\u043a\u043e!<\/strong> (Bitter!) at a wedding banquet. When guests chant <strong>\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044c\u043a\u043e!<\/strong> the bride and the groom have to stand up and kiss. Where does this tradition originate? Nobody knows for sure. The version that I like the most explains that while vodka that is customarily drunk at weddings is bitter, the newlyweds sweeten its taste with their <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0446\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (kiss).<\/p>\n<p>Two other must haves at a wedding are <strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (music) and <strong>\u0442\u0430\u043c\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (toast-master). Russians have a nice saying that sums up the importance of music at a wedding: <strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u044c\u0431\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0435\u0437 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0430 &#8211; <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0441\u0451<\/strong> (a wedding without an accordion is just a drinking binge). Not to say that there is an accordion at every wedding\u2026<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>\u0442\u0430\u043c\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (toast-master), however, is present at every wedding. Sometimes it is a professional, hired for the occasion. Sometimes it is a relative or a guest who is particularly knowledgeable in all things toast-making and keeping the banquet fun going until the wee hours and given the newlyweds the proper send-off for their <strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0431\u043d\u043e\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u0443\u0442\u0435\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (wedding trip) or <strong>\u043c\u0435\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0446<\/strong> (honeymoon).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s talk some more about Russian weddings.
