Not all husbands experience intense dislike of their mothers-in-law and not all mothers-in-law can&#8217;t stand their sons-in-law.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This week Russians celebrate the festival of <strong>\u041c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong> (Maslenitsa). We wrote a bit about it on this blog before in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/happy-maslenitsa\/\">this post<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/%C2%AB%D0%9C%D0%B0%D1%81%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%B0%C2%BB-begins-and-that%E2%80%99s-why-%C2%AB%D0%B3%D0%BE%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%BC-%D0%B1%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BD%D1%8B%C2%BB-we%E2%80%99re-m\/\">this one<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/%D0%9C%D0%B0%D1%81%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%B0-a-farewell-to-winter\/\">this one<\/a>. If you joined us just recently or would like a quick refresher, here are some basic facts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is sort of like Mardi Gras, except it lasts <strong>\u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043d\u0435\u0439<\/strong> (seven days) instead of just one.<\/li>\n<li>It is spent eating lots and lots of <strong>\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (pancakes) with all sorts of fattening dairy products, such as <strong>\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433<\/strong> (cottage cheese), <strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0430<\/strong> (sour cream) and, of course, <strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u043e<\/strong> (butter).<\/li>\n<li>Since most of the time the festival happens when it\u2019s still cold and snowy, bikinis and throwing beads a la New Orleans are out, but <strong>\u0441\u043d\u0435\u0436\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span><\/strong> (snowball fights) and sleigh rides are in.<\/li>\n<li>Every day has its own name and related customs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Speaking of customs, this is the time for strengthening family ties and building goodwill, particularly between sons-in-law and their mothers-in-law. In fact, not one, but two days of Maslenitsa are devoted to this.<\/p>\n<p>During Maslenitsa week, Wednesday is the day when <strong>\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (son-in-law) is invited to <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0449\u0438\u043d <\/strong><strong>\u0434\u043e\u043c<\/strong> (mother-in-law\u2019s home) for some blini &#8211; <strong>\u043a <\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0449\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong>. Then on Friday it\u2019s the son-in-law\u2019s time to host and the mother-in-law stops by <strong>\u0441 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0442\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u043c <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0438\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c<\/strong> (with a reciprocal visit).<\/p>\n<p>So this Maslenitsa week, let\u2019s talk about <strong>\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong> (sons-in-law) and <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0449\u0438<\/strong> (mothers-in-law). First, some Family Structure 101. In English, things are simple. Assuming traditional family structure, once a couple gets married, they each acquire a couple of in-laws &#8211; a mother-in-law and a father-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>In Russia things are a bit more complicated. <strong>\u0416\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (a wife) becomes <strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (daughter-in-law) to her <strong>\u0441\u0432\u0451\u043a\u0440<\/strong> (husband\u2019s father) and <strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044c<\/strong> (husband\u2019s mother). <strong>\u041c\u0443\u0436<\/strong> (a husband), on the other hand, becomes <strong>\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (son-in-law) of <strong>\u0442\u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (wife\u2019s father) and <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0449\u0430<\/strong> (wife\u2019s mother).<\/p>\n<p>Yet it is <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0449\u0430<\/strong> that towers above all of them presenting a truly archetypal figure. The number of <strong>\u0430\u043d\u0435\u043a\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (jokes) about <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0449\u0430<\/strong> is probably larger than those about <strong>\u0412<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (little Johnny) and all the characters from <strong>17 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0433\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u0432\u0435\u0441\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (17 Moments of Spring) combined. As she gets up and leaves, the clock falls down. \u00a0The husband, angrily, exclaims: \u201cThis clock is always late!\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>Not to say that all mothers-in-law and their sons-in-law are sworn enemies. Still, as <a href=\"http:\/\/health.mail.ru\/articles\/61946\/\">this article points out<\/a>, <strong>\u0434\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (friendly relationship) between the two are <strong>\u0437\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433 <\/strong><strong>\u0443\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430<\/strong> (key to success) in marriage. It further suggests some goodwill gestures to win <strong>\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0449\u0438<\/strong> (wife\u2019s mother\u2019s good graces). Turns out that, since <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0449\u0430<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0449\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/strong> (wife\u2019s mother is a woman too), flowers and gifts for birthdays and March 8<sup>th<\/sup> as well as some timely compliments should do the trick.
