It&#8217;s a good sitcom to practice conversational Russian as well as to try to figure out who&#8217;s who in this crazy extended family.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Want to play a quick game of associations? I\u2019m going to say (ok, write) a word and you quickly reply with whatever word comes to mind. Ready? Here we go: FAMILY\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Now, play this game with a native Russian speaker: <strong>\u0421\u0415\u041c\u042c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u042f<\/span><\/strong>&#8230; and they will likely respond with <strong>\u044f\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u043a\u0430 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430<\/strong>. The <strong>\u043d\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u0448\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u043d\u0443<\/strong> (here: overused, old and boring) Soviet phrase <strong>\u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> &#8211; <\/strong><strong>\u044f\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u043a\u0430 <\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430<\/strong> can be translated as \u201cfamily is society\u2019s fundamental unit\u201d. So let\u2019s talk about this fundamental unit.<\/p>\n<p>Russians have plenty of words that describe family ties. And many are confusing. It all starts with <strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u044c\u0431\u0430<\/strong> (wedding). In English language men and women simply get married. In Russian, a woman <strong>\u0432\u044b\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u0442 <\/strong><strong>\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0443\u0436<\/strong> while a man <strong>\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0442\u0441\u044f<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u041d\u0435 \u0445\u043e\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span> \u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f, \u0430 \u0445\u043e\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span> \u0436\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f!<\/strong> (I don\u2019t want to study, I want to get married) says Mitrofanushka (diminutive of a man\u2019s name <strong>\u041c\u0438\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d<\/strong>) in Denis Fonvizin\u2019s comedy <strong><em>\u041d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0441\u043b\u044c <\/em><\/strong>(<em>The Minor<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u0423\u0436 <\/strong><strong>\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0443\u0436 <\/strong><strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0436<\/strong> (Already can\u2019t wait to get married) is a phrase sometimes used as in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmo.com.ua\/uzh-zamuzh-nevterpezh\/\">articles<\/a> for and about women. By the way, it is a very handy mnemonics for a grammar rule: all adverbs ending in sibilant consonants (<strong>\u0436, <\/strong><strong>\u0447, <\/strong><strong>\u0448, <\/strong><strong>\u0449<\/strong>) must end with a soft sign (<strong>\u044c<\/strong>) except these three &#8211; <strong>\u0443\u0436<\/strong> (already), <strong>\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0443\u0436<\/strong> (marry), <strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0436<\/strong> (can\u2019t bear any longer).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As we already discussed, <strong>\u043c\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0434\u043e\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (young couple) acquires not just their <strong>\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (second half) or <strong>\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\/<\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0438<\/strong> (masculine\/feminine life partner), but a whole new extended family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0416\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (wife) gets <strong>\u0441\u0432\u0435\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044c<\/strong> (husband\u2019s mother) and <strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0440<\/strong> (husband\u2019s father) and becomes <strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (daughter-in-law) to the husband\u2019s entire family, except for the father. To her father-in-law, she is <strong>\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (daughter-in-law). After all, they become each others <strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (relatives) as well. They become <strong>\u0441\u0432\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (parents of a child\u2019s spouse) &#8211; <strong>\u0441\u0432\u0430\u0442<\/strong> (father of child\u2019s spouse) and <strong>\u0441\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong> (mother of a child\u2019s spouse). This might be particularly confusing because there is a similar-sounding Russian word <strong>\u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0445\u0430<\/strong> means a match-maker.<\/p>\n<p>Even more relatives join the extended family after a child gets baptized. First, there are <strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0446<\/strong> (godfather) or simply <strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> and <strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0430\u044f <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (godmother) or simply <strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0430\u044f<\/strong>. These godmother and godfather become \u00a0<strong>\u043a\u0443\u043c<\/strong> and <strong>\u043a\u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> not just to the families of their <strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (godson) or <strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong> (goddaughter), but to each other as well.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, let\u2019s talk about cousins or <strong>\u0434\u0432\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u044f<\/strong> (male cousins) and <strong>\u0434\u0432\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (female cousins) who might also be the old-fashioned and now rarely-used <strong>\u043a\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (male cousins) and <strong>\u043a\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (female cousins). Not much to say here other than when cousins grow up and have children of their own, these children become <strong>\u0442\u0440\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (females) and <strong>\u0442\u0440\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 <\/strong><strong>\u0431\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u044f<\/strong> (males) to each other. When they grow up and have children, these kids become <strong>\u0447\u0435\u0442\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> brothers and sisters to each other. Same goes for <strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u044f<\/strong>, <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u044f, <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (nephew) and <strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong> (niece) ties between cousins and their children. The words are the same, but the adjective <strong>\u0434\u0432\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439\/<\/strong><strong>\u0430\u044f<\/strong> is added.<\/p>\n<p>And now it\u2019s practice time. Get out your family album and look through it figuring out who\u2019s who in your extended family. And don\u2019t forget about yourself.
