One of the blog readers, David, left a comment on the previous post that included a short translation. Now, this translation was done by David and other members of \u043a\u0440\u0443\u0436\u043e<\/span>\u043a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0416\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> (the Zhuravli group), first using Google Translation (Welsh into Russian). The members of the group then worked on improving the results produced by Google.<\/p>\n

David posted the entire translation in the comments asking for suggestions on how to improve it. Here\u2019s what they came up with (the original translation is in italics<\/em>):<\/p>\n

Same is with greetings. \u041f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> is very informal and would not be used in this case. It\u2019s always a safe bet to match the level of formality to the one afforded to you by your Russian counterpart. In this case, \u0417\u0434\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443\u0439\u0442\u0435<\/strong> (how do you do) or \u0414\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0440\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/strong> (Good afternoon) are appropriate.<\/p>\n

\u0414\u0430, \u043c\u043d\u0435 \u0431\u044b \u0445\u043e\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044c \u0449\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0443<\/strong>. I\u2019m not sure why Russians use this construct \u043c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0431\u044b <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044c<\/strong> instead of \u044f <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0447\u0443<\/span><\/strong> in polite adult conversations. Maybe the direct \u044f <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0447\u0443<\/span><\/strong> is seen as \u043d\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (immodest) or \u0441\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u043e\u043c <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0430\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (overly hasty) of an answer. There are, of course, situations when \u044f <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0447\u0443<\/span><\/strong> is entirely appropriate: \u042f <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0447\u0443<\/span> <\/strong>\u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0441 <\/strong>\u0442\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (I want to be with you), \u042f <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0447\u0443<\/span> <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431\u0435<\/span> <\/strong>\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c, <\/strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e <\/strong>\u0442\u0430\u043a <\/strong>\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0439\u0434\u0451<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> (I want to tell you that it won\u2019t work this way), etc.<\/p>\n

Should we use \u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044f\u0442<\/strong> or \u043e\u0447\u0438\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442<\/strong> in this case? This is a tough one. Ok, the correct answer is \u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044f\u0442<\/strong> since that\u2019s what \u0449\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (brushes) do in Russian. For example, \u0437\u0443\u0431\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong>\u0449\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0430 <\/strong>\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0442 <\/strong>\u0437\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u044b<\/strong> (toothbrush brushes teeth), etc. The difficulty I have here is explaining the exact rules (if any) for when to use \u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to clean) and when to use \u043e\u0447\u0438\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to clean, to cleanse, to clear). I\u2019d say that you should use the former when speaking about cleaning in general and the latter when speaking about cleaning from something – \u043e\u0447\u0438\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043e\u0442 <\/strong>\u0441\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430<\/strong> (clean from snow), \u043e\u0447\u0438\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0436\u0443\u0440\u0443<\/span><\/strong> (peel rind off), etc. When in doubt, go with \u044d<\/span><\/strong>\u0442\u0438 <\/strong>\u0449\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438 <\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span> <\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u044e\u0442<\/strong>? (do these brushes work well?)<\/p>\n

Once again, I suggest correcting the sentence about the brush. Unless the house owner is a drama queen, she might consider using a more reserved \u0414\u0430, <\/strong>\u043c\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u043d\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0442\u0441\u044f <\/strong>\u044d<\/span><\/strong>\u0442\u0430 <\/strong>\u0449\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (Yes, I do like this brush).<\/p>\n

At this point I started to suspect that the brush is really \u043d\u0430\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0430 <\/strong>\u0434\u043b\u044f <\/strong>\u043f\u044b\u043b\u0435\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0430<\/strong> (an attachment for a vacuum cleaner).
