In my recent Sex in \u041f\u0413\u0422<\/strong><\/a> post I suggested some questions for independent research. If you haven\u2019t done it yet, but plan on doing it this weekend, then you should probably not read this post right now. As they say in movie reviews, Spoiler Alert.<\/p>\n

So let\u2019s start with the last question first:<\/p>\n

Practice with some Russian names – what are the names of the guys that were fighting outside the club. The first one, <\/em>\u0424\u0435\u0434\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/em><\/strong> is <\/em>\u0424\u0451\u0434\u043e\u0440<\/em><\/strong> (Fed\u2019ka – Fyodor). Can you figure out the other two? Also, what are the (so important in Russian) diminutives of their names?<\/em><\/p>\n

Some time ago we talked about \u0443\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044c\u0448\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e-<\/strong>\u043b\u0430\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong>\u0438\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> (diminutives<\/a> of names) and their importance in Russian language. But what if you don\u2019t want to be lovey-dovey towards someone? What if this someone \u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043b <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span><\/strong> (got on your last nerve) or maybe you just know this person really well, say a childhood friend (kids use this form a whole lot for their peers)? Russian language allows you to be unceremonious with someone while still calling them by their first name:<\/p>\n

\u0423\u0445, \u041c\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0430, \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0442\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u044f, \u0441\u044a\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u0432\u0441\u044e \u043c\u043e\u044e<\/span> \u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0443 \u0438 \u0441\u043b\u043e\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0439 \u0441\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0447\u0438\u043a!<\/strong> (Oh, disgusting Masha, she ate all my porridge and broke my little chair!)<\/p>\n

\u0421\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0430 <\/strong>\u0441 <\/strong>\u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u044c\u044f<\/span>\u043c\u0438 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0448\u0451<\/span>\u043b <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0443 <\/strong>\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0431\u0443 <\/strong>\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (Sasha went to the river to fish with his friends).<\/p>\n

\u042f \u043a\u0430\u043a \u0443\u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430, \u0447\u0442\u043e \u042e<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430 \u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442, \u0442\u0430\u043a \u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span> \u043e\u0442\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span> \u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0443!<\/strong> (As soon as I found out that Yuri was smoking, I whooped his behind!)<\/p>\n

So, \u0424\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong> is an unceremonious for \u0424\u0451<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0440<\/strong>. The diminutive of the name is \u0424\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u041a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong>\u2019s proper name is \u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> or for those who love him \u041a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u0412\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong>\u2019s name on all his papers is \u0412\u0430\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0439<\/strong>. To his girlfriend he is probably \u0412\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong> or \u0412\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why is Fyodor, Miranda\u2019s former boyfriend, first introduced as Vasya in \u201c<\/strong><\/em>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043f\u0451\u0440\u0441\u044f, <\/em><\/strong>\u0432\u0430\u0441\u044f, <\/em><\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0438\u0442\u201d<\/em><\/strong> comment (when girls enter the club).<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking of \u0412\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u044f<\/strong>… This name can serve as \u0438<\/span><\/strong>\u043c\u044f <\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0435<\/strong> (appellative) in many cases:<\/p>\n

\u041c\u0443\u0436 \u0432\u0441\u0435\u0433\u0434\u0430<\/span> \u0444\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0444\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0443\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0443 \u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u043c\u0435\u0441\u0442, \u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043f\u0430 \u0437\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044c \u0431\u044b\u043b \u0412\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u044f.<\/strong> (My husband always has pictures of himself taken at various landmarks, sort of \u201cI was here\u201d) – this doesn\u2019t mean that the husband\u2019s name is Vasya.<\/p>\n

\u042f <\/strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431\u0435<\/span> <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0434\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u044f <\/strong>\u0412\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u044f, <\/strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u044b <\/strong>\u0437\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u043c <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0442\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u044e <\/strong>\u0434\u0430\u043b\u044c <\/strong>\u0438\u0434\u0442\u0438<\/span><\/strong> (I\u2019m not some Uncle Vasya to walk all this way for beer) – this doesn\u2019t refer to an actual Uncle Vasya either.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the other meaning of the word <\/em>\u0442\u0451\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/em><\/strong> (heifer)<\/em><\/p>\n

That\u2019s easy – it means \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (a girl) or \u043c\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u044f <\/strong>\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0449\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/strong> (young woman). It is a disrespectful way of talking about women, but \u0432 <\/strong>\u043c\u0443\u0436\u0441\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (in guys-only circle) it is used a lot:<\/p>\n

\u042f \u043d\u0430 \u0434\u043d\u044f\u0445 \u0441 \u0442\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0442\u0451<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u043f\u043e\u0437\u043d\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u043b\u0441\u044f, \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e \u043f\u044f\u0442\u044c \u0431\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043b\u043e\u0432!<\/strong> (I met this hot looking chick the other day; lit: I met a girl the other day and she is so hot, she gets an \u201cA\u201d)<\/p>\n

For<\/em> grammar<\/em> geeks<\/em> – why<\/em> in<\/em> the<\/em> phrase<\/em> \u201c\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u043e\u0437\u044b\u0440\u044c \u044d\u0442\u043e \u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0439\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043d\u043e\u0433\u0438, \u043f\u043e\u044d\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443 \u043e\u043d\u0430 \u043d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0433\u0434\u0430 \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0442…\u201d<\/strong> I wrote <\/em>\u043f\u043e\u044d\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/em><\/strong> instead of <\/em>\u043f\u043e \u044d\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/em><\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n

JohnS answered this question well in his comment, so I\u2019m going to use his answer:<\/p>\n

\u043f\u043e\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/strong> is an adverb meaning \u201ctherefore, for that reason, that\u2019s why\u201d, and \u043f\u043e \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/strong> a preposition.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Do you know the classic Russian tongue-twister \u0428\u043b\u0430 <\/strong>\u0421\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0430 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong>\u0448\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0435<\/span> <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0441\u043e\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 <\/strong>\u0441\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (Sasha strolled along the road and sucked on a pretzel)? Well, here are two examples:<\/p>\n

\u041f\u043e <\/strong>\u044d<\/span><\/strong>\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443 <\/strong>\u0448\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0435<\/span> <\/strong>\u0448\u043b\u0430 <\/strong>\u0421\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0430, <\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u0433\u0434\u0430<\/span> <\/strong>\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span> <\/strong>\u0441\u043e\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 <\/strong>\u0441\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (This was the road Sasha strolled along while sucking on a pretzel).<\/p>\n

What does the phrase <\/em>\u0421\u0430\u043c\u0430\u043d\u0442\u0430 <\/em><\/strong>\u0431\u043b\u044f*<\/em><\/strong>\u044c<\/em><\/strong> mean (it appears on the fence as Samantha is first introduced and also in the night sky as she\u2019s making out with a policeman)?<\/em><\/p>\n

Ok, do you really need my help with this one?<\/p>\n

Why as Carry says \u201csex lives of my girlfriends\u201d the camera pans to a goat?<\/em><\/p>\n

I think we had this discussion a while ago in the comments to an old post<\/a>. The original comment was:<\/p>\n

applied to women \u201c\u043a\u043e\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (female goat) does not have the same sense of rudeness as \u043a\u043e\u0437\u0451\u043b (male goat) when applied to men. I think it\u2019d be more like saying that a woman is foolish or, perhaps, restless (often with sexual connotation).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the opening scene where \u201cCarry\u201d walks along and gets splashed by muddy water, what does she have in the paper cone?<\/em><\/p>\n

The answer to this last question is simple – \u0441\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (sunflower seeds). Now, here in the US I don\u2019t see a lot of sunflower seeds lovers. And those that do like them do it all wrong. Let me get something straight once and for all here: in Russia, sunflower seeds are not health food. They are recreation!<\/p>\n
