If you haven\u2019t done it yet, but plan on doing it this weekend, then you should probably not read this post right now. As they say in movie reviews, Spoiler Alert.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s start with the last question first:<\/p>\n<p><em>Practice with some Russian names &#8211; what are the names of the guys that were fighting outside the club. The first one, <\/em><strong><em>\u0424\u0435\u0434\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/em><\/strong><em> is <\/em><strong><em>\u0424\u0451\u0434\u043e\u0440<\/em><\/strong><em> (Fed\u2019ka &#8211; Fyodor). Can you figure out the other two? Also, what are the (so important in Russian) diminutives of their names?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some time ago we talked about <strong>\u0443\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e-<\/strong><strong>\u043b\u0430\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0445 <\/strong><strong>\u0438\u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/love-me-russian-or-a-little-something-about-the-diminutive-part-i-introduction\/\">diminutives<\/a> of names) and their importance in Russian language. But what if you don\u2019t want to be lovey-dovey towards someone? What if this someone <strong>\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b <\/strong><strong>\u0442\u0435\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong> (got on your last nerve) or maybe you just know this person really well, say a childhood friend (kids use this form a whole lot for their peers)? The diminutive of the name is <strong>\u0424<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong>\u2019s proper name is <strong>\u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> or for those who love him <strong>\u041a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0412<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong>\u2019s name on all his papers is <strong>\u0412\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0439<\/strong>. It is a disrespectful way of talking about women, but <strong>\u0432 <\/strong><strong>\u043c\u0443\u0436\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (in guys-only circle) it is used a lot:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u042f \u043d\u0430 \u0434\u043d\u044f\u0445 \u0441 \u0442\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u043f\u043e\u0437\u043d\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u043b\u0441\u044f, \u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e \u043f\u044f\u0442\u044c \u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043b\u043e\u0432!<\/strong> (I met this hot looking chick the other day; lit: I met a girl the other day and she is so hot, she gets an \u201cA\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><em>For<\/em><em> grammar<\/em><em> geeks<\/em><em> &#8211; why<\/em><em> in<\/em><em> the<\/em><em> phrase<\/em><em> <strong>\u201c\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u043e\u0437\u044b\u0440\u044c \u044d\u0442\u043e \u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0439\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043d\u043e\u0433\u0438, \u043f\u043e\u044d\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443 \u043e\u043d\u0430 \u043d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0433\u0434\u0430 \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438\u0442&#8230;\u201d<\/strong> I wrote <\/em><strong><em>\u043f\u043e\u044d\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/em><\/strong><em> instead of <\/em><strong><em>\u043f\u043e \u044d\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/em><\/strong><em>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>JohnS answered this question well in his comment, so I\u2019m going to use his answer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u043f\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/strong> is an adverb meaning \u201ctherefore, for that reason, that\u2019s why\u201d, and <strong>\u043f\u043e <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/strong> a preposition.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Do you know the classic Russian tongue-twister <strong>\u0428\u043b\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0421<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u043f\u043e <\/strong><strong>\u0448\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span> <\/strong><strong>\u0438 <\/strong><strong>\u0441\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 <\/strong><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (Sasha strolled along the road and sucked on a pretzel)? The original comment was:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>applied to women <strong>\u201c\u043a\u043e\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u201d<\/strong> (female goat) does not have the same sense of rudeness as \u043a\u043e\u0437\u0451\u043b (male goat) when applied to men. I think it\u2019d be more like saying that a woman is foolish or, perhaps, restless (often with sexual connotation).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(If you haven\u2019t read this particular post or the comments to it, you should now. The comments are very funny and the post is not boring either)<\/p>\n<p><em>In the opening scene where \u201cCarry\u201d walks along and gets splashed by muddy water, what does she have in the paper cone?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The answer to this last question is simple &#8211; <strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (sunflower seeds). Now, here in the US I don\u2019t see a lot of sunflower seeds lovers. And those that do like them do it all wrong. Let me get something straight once and for all here: in Russia, sunflower seeds are not health food. They are recreation!<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s all for the answers.
