May 1st<\/sup>\u00a0starts a calendar period commonly referred to as\u00a0\u043c\u0430\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435\u00a0<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong>\u00a0(May holidays).\u00a0\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u043e\u0435\u00a0<\/strong>\u043c\u0430\u044f<\/strong>\u00a0(May 1st<\/sup>), also known as\u00a0\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u043e\u043c\u0430\u0439<\/strong>, used to be a one of those propaganda-driven Soviet holidays,\u00a0\u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c\u00a0<\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u0436\u0434\u0443\u043d\u0430\u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0439\u00a0<\/strong>\u0441\u043e\u043b\u0438\u0434\u0430\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00a0<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0443\u0434\u044f\u0449\u0438\u0445\u0441\u044f<\/strong>\u00a0(International Workers\u2019 Day).<\/p>\n

Back then the schedule was pretty set – a government-organized\u00a0\u0434\u0435\u043c\u043e\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00a0<\/strong>(political demonstration) or, in larger cities,\u00a0\u043f\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0434<\/strong>\u00a0(parade) followed by\u00a0\u0437\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0435<\/strong>\u00a0(a holiday meal) with a centerpiece being\u00a0\u043c\u0438\u0441\u043a\u0430\u00a0<\/strong>\u0441\u0430\u043b\u0430\u0442\u0430 \u00ab<\/strong>\u041e\u043b\u0438\u0432\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong>\u00a0(a bowl of Olivier salad). The following day was spent at an organized\u00a0\u043c\u0430\u0451\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/strong>\u00a0(May Day outing) or, sometimes, at a mandatory\u00a0\u0441\u0443\u0431\u0431\u043e\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong>, a type of volunteer neighborhood clean-up and beautification project that would take place on a Saturday or a Sunday.<\/p>\n

Now, the days of marching through the city square carrying\u00a0\u043f\u043b\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0442\u044b<\/strong>\u00a0(banners) with\u00a0\u043b\u043e\u0437\u0443\u043d\u0433\u0438<\/strong>\u00a0(slogans) such as\u00a0\u00ab<\/strong>\u041c\u0438\u0440!\u00a0<\/strong>\u0422\u0440\u0443\u0434! \u041c\u0430\u0439!\u00bb<\/strong>\u00a0(Peace! Work! May!),\u00a0\u00ab\u0414\u0430 \u0437\u0434\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443\u0435\u0442 \u043a\u043e\u043c\u043c\u0443\u043d\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043f\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0438\u044f!\u00bb<\/strong>\u00a0(Glory to the Communist Party!) and\u00a0\u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u0440\u043e\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0438\u00a0<\/strong>\u0432\u0441\u0435\u0445\u00a0<\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d,\u00a0<\/strong>\u0441\u043e\u0435\u0434\u0438\u043d\u044f\u0439\u0442\u0435\u0441\u044c!\u00bb<\/strong>\u00a0(Workers of the world, unite!)<\/p>\n

So what is going on in Russia on May 1st<\/sup>\u00a0this year?<\/p>\n

\u041a\u043e\u043c\u043c\u0443\u043d\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0430\u00a0<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0438\u044f\u00a0<\/strong>\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439\u00a0<\/strong>\u0424\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438\u0438,\u00a0<\/strong>\u041a\u041f\u0420\u0424<\/strong>\u00a0for short (Communist Party of the Russian Federation) continues the long-standing tradition of\u00a0\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u043e\u043c\u0430\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f\u00a0<\/strong>\u0434\u0435\u043c\u043e\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong>\u00a0(May Day demonstration) with somewhat updated slogans:<\/p>\n

On the lighter side of things,\u00a0\u043c\u0430\u0451\u0432\u043a\u0438<\/strong>\u00a0(May Day outings) are also planned since May Day is not just\u00a0\u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c\u00a0<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/strong>\u00a0(Labor Day), but also\u00a0\u0414\u0435\u043d\u044c\u00a0<\/strong>\u0432\u0435\u0441\u043d\u044b<\/strong>\u00a0(Spring Day). So expect plenty of\u00a0\u043f\u0438\u043a\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong>\u00a0(picnics),\u00a0\u0448\u0430\u0448\u043b\u044b\u043a\u0438<\/strong>\u00a0(shish kebabs),\u00a0\u043a\u043e\u043d\u0446\u0435\u0440\u0442\u044b<\/strong>\u00a0(concerts),\u00a0\u0442\u0430\u043d\u0446\u044b<\/strong>\u00a0(dancing) and such.<\/p>\n

In the mean time, Moscow is gearing up for\u00a0\u043e\u0447\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0439\u00a0<\/strong>\u041f\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0434\u00a0<\/strong>\u041f\u043e\u0431\u0435\u0434\u044b<\/strong>\u00a0(another Victory Day Parade) with the final night-time rehearsal on May 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0and the grand daytime dress rehearsal on May 6th<\/sup>.
