What does Russian folk wisdom teaches us about work? To begin with, it encourages you to procrastinate. The most well-known saying is \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u043b\u043a, <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u043b\u0435\u0441 <\/strong>\u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u0443\u0431\u0435\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> (work is not a wolf, it won\u2019t run into a forest). It is followed pretty closely by \u0435<\/span><\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u0438 <\/strong>\u0445\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0448\u044c <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c, <\/strong>\u043b\u044f\u0433, <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0441\u043f\u0438<\/span> <\/strong>\u0438 <\/strong>\u0432\u0441\u0451 <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0439\u0434\u0451<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> (if you want to do some work, lay down, nap and it will pass). Sure, there is the annoying \u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0442\u0440\u0430 <\/strong>\u0442\u043e, <\/strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e <\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e <\/strong>\u0441\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u0441\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f<\/strong> (don\u2019t leave for tomorrow what can be done today). But even this maxim for \u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0438\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (goody two-shoes) has been improved upon – \u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430 <\/strong>\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0442\u0440\u0430 <\/strong>\u0442\u043e, <\/strong>\u0447\u0442\u043e <\/strong>\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e <\/strong>\u0441\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c <\/strong>\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/strong> (don\u2019t leave for tomorrow what can be done the day after tomorrow).<\/p>\n

In case you are so \u0446\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u0443\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043c\u043b\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (motivated) to get the job done that you are ready to start, remember \u043d\u0435 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0448\u0438 – <\/strong>\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u0439, <\/strong>\u0430 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0448\u0438 – <\/strong>\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0439<\/strong> (think before you start, but once you get started, get it done). Of course, since \u0434\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u043d\u044c <\/strong>\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u043a\u043e\u0439 <\/strong>\u0431\u043e\u0433\u0430\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0442<\/strong> (a fool gets richer just by thinking about it), you are best off jumping right in, don\u2019t you? Except, of course, \u043f\u043e\u0441\u043f\u0435\u0448\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u044c – <\/strong>\u043b\u044e\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u043d\u0430\u0441\u043c\u0435\u0448\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u044c<\/strong> (haste makes waste) which would only work out if you work as \u043a\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0443\u043d<\/strong> (a clown) or \u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (a comedian).<\/p>\n

Ironically, with so much controversial advice, Russians are a hardworking people. After all, every Russian child knows that \u0441\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u043b <\/strong>\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e – <\/strong>\u0433\u0443\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0439 <\/strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043e<\/strong> (lit: when work is done, go have fun; business before pleasure). Besides, as we all know so well \u043f\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0443 <\/strong>\u0443\u0437\u043d\u0430\u044e<\/span>\u0442 <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u0435, <\/strong>\u0430 <\/strong>\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0430 <\/strong>\u0432 <\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0435<\/strong> (a bird is recognized by its flight, a person – by his work).
