This week was a great week for me because during it a great progress was made in my Russian life – I finally received a new \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [pass; permit, pl.<\/em> \u043f\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span><\/strong>], something that I’ve been craving for over a year and a half now. It does, as a matter of fact, have another, more official, name, though colloquially it is called just \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> as all other types of \u2018passes’<\/em> and \u2018permits’<\/em> here in Russia – \u00ab<\/strong>\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044f<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [teacher’s identification card]. Even though I am a \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0448\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/strong> <\/strong>\u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430<\/span><\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [teacher of Swedish] since October 2007, which means that \u00ab<\/strong>\u044f<\/strong> <\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430\u044e<\/span><\/strong> <\/strong>\u0448\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> <\/strong>\u044f\u0437\u044b<\/span>\u043a<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0432<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0443\u043d\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0435<\/strong>\u00bb [<\/strong>I teach Swedish at the university], I had not been given any official documents for various reasons until this week. This is after all Russia. The reasons could have been of any kind and all sorts. It could’ve be because I’m also a student and I already have a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0442\u0443\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [student id-card] and they might have considered that enough for one person. But a student can’t do all the things a teacher can do at a university, like, for example, go get keys to various auditoriums. Before, since I have to get keys on three evenings a week, I would always have to go hunt different faculties for some professors I knew to do it for me. In one way that was good – after a year and a half of doing that I got to be on good personal terms with many professors and they all call me \u00ab<\/strong>\u0414\u0436\u043e\u0437\u0435\u0444\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong>\u00bb <\/strong>now. However, at 6.30 pm most faculties are rather empty and sometimes I would not be so lucky as to find someone straight away, but had to begin my hunt an hour or so before class, running up and down and up and down the four floors again and again throughout the whole building. I suppose I trimmed my thighs somewhat by this behavior, but there was also another problem – not all my students study at my university (my course is the only of its kind in the Urals)<\/em>, yet only a teacher can \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\u00bb <\/strong>[here<\/em>: let in] students from other universities. And the \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0445\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [guards] at Ural State aren’t the type to take your word for it… On Tuesday I realized that \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442<\/strong> <\/strong>\u0441<\/strong> <\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span><\/strong>!\u00bb<\/strong> [a wonderful, yet little archaic version of the popular expression \u00ab\u0441 <\/strong>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span><\/strong> <\/strong>\u0445\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0442<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong>: I’ve had enough; or \u2018enough is enough!’<\/em>] after running around in a clearly abandoned by humanity building against time to find someone to fetch the key for my auditorium and let in a couple of my students simultaneously. As Russia is a country clearly freed from any sort of logic, it was easier done than said to receive the necessary document – already on Thursday morning I had the magic tiny piece of plastic in my hand! Now let’s take a closer look at our word of the week…<\/p>\n

Here’s my collection of the four \u00ab\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0430 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[different kinds of \u2018permits’] that I must carry on my person on a daily basis to make life in Russia a little bit smoother. Above in the bigger pink case is my \u00ab\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [passport], in the smaller is my \u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0443\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb <\/strong>[student id-card] (yes, partly my passionate devotion to this country comes from the fact that one can buy leather cases like these almost everywhere at a cheap price… and every time I cross an international border I’m blissfully happy to be a citizen of a country with pink passports!), my \u00ab\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [from the verb \u00ab\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>– to read: library card for the university library] and at last – my \u00ab\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [from the verb \u00ab\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> – to certify; to attest; to witness (to a signature): teacher’s identification card].<\/em><\/p>\n

The word \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [n.<\/em> 1.<\/strong> admission; admittance, 2.<\/strong> passing through; letting through, 3.<\/strong> omission, 4.<\/strong> failure to attend; absence, 5.<\/strong> blank; gap, 6.<\/strong> pass; permit, 7.<\/strong> password] has many meanings, as is clearly visible from the seven numbers above, and comes from the verb \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [impf., pf:<\/em> \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0443\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> – 1.<\/strong> to admit; let in; let pass; let through, 2.<\/strong> to pass through; run through; put through, 3.<\/strong> to let in (water, light, etc), 4.<\/strong> sports<\/em> to allow (a goal, a point to be scored, etc), 5.<\/strong> to omit; leave out, 6.<\/strong> to skip; pass over, 7.<\/strong> to miss; to fail to attend; 8.<\/strong> to miss; let slip by]. Here are a couple of sentences to illustrate different ways of using this word – and a short demonstration of what all those six cases can do to it!<\/p>\n
