Have you had a power outage lately? If you have, then you probably have a story to share about living by candlelight and having to grill all those hamburgers you had in the freezer. Would you like to know how say all that in Russian?<\/p>\n

First thing first, let\u2019s start with \u201cpower outage\u201d. You might say there was \u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f \u0432 \u044d\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0435\u0442\u0438<\/span><\/strong> (lit: breakdown in the electrical grid) or \u043e\u0442\u043a\u043b\u044e\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u044d\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u0440\u043e\u044d\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (lit: electricity shut off). For example,<\/p>\n

If you are not sure whether it\u2019s a power outage or just \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0433\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0448\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (burnt out) \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (here: fuses), check your \u044d\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0449\u0438\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043a<\/strong> (fuse box). I once \u0432\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0432\u0438\u043b\u0430 \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span> \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u0434\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0439<\/strong> (made a total fool of myself) when I tried to persuade the power company we had a power outage on our street. Since then I learned to first \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043a\u043b\u044e\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0445\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (toggle the circuit breaker) before calling in with a complaint. Another good idea might be \u0441\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0441\u043e\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0439<\/strong> (to ask the neighbors) \u201c\u0443 \u0432\u0430\u0441 \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0432\u0435\u0442?\u201d<\/strong> (lit: do you have light?)<\/p>\n

By the way, \u044d\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong> (electricity) is a long word. Maybe because of that or because the absence of \u044d\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u043e\u0441\u0432\u0435\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (electrical lighting) makes the most impact on us, in Russian we sometimes use the word \u0441\u0432\u0435\u0442<\/strong> (light) to mean \u201celectricity\u201d. So we would ask<\/p>\n

\u0423 \u0432\u0430\u0441 \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0432\u0435\u0442?<\/strong> meaning \u201cis your electricity on?\u201d<\/p>\n

Or would say<\/p>\n

But, as the saying goes, \u0432 \u043b\u044e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043c \u0441\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435 \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u043d\u0430\u0439\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u043a\u0443\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043a \u0432\u0435\u0442\u0447\u0438\u043d\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (when life gives you lemons, make lemonade; lit: there\u2019s a bit of ham in every piggish circumstance). As long as you have \u0441\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0438<\/strong> (candles), \u0444\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (flashlights), \u0433\u0440\u0438\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (a grill) and \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u044b<\/strong> (canned food), you can \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span> \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u0432\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044f<\/strong> (have a good time). As another saying goes, \u0441 \u043c\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u043c \u0440\u0430\u0439 \u0438 \u0432 \u0448\u0430\u043b\u0430\u0448\u0435<\/span><\/strong> (love makes a hovel a castle).<\/p>\n

Once \u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f \u0443\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0435\u043d\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (the breakdown is repaired) and \u0432\u0441\u0451 \u0441\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430 \u0432\u043e\u0439\u0434\u0451<\/span>\u0442 \u0432 \u0441\u0432\u043e\u044e<\/span> \u043a\u043e\u043b\u0435\u044e<\/span><\/strong> (everything will return to normal), we can look at some popular English expressions with the word \u201cpower\u201d and their Russian translations:<\/p>\n
