Even though it is obvious to anyone who reads this blog once in a while that there cannot be a single post about Russian language without a little something about the six cases, I’ve come to the conclusion that it is not enough. I want more – and I think we all need more. \u00ab<\/strong>\u0411\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u0435<\/strong>\u043e<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/strong>!\u00bb<\/strong> [More about cases!] We must dedicate ourselves to deeper study of the cases, we must go further than we have ever gone before in order to fully understand them, and finally learn how to use them correctly. But let’s not go all \u2018case-crazy’<\/em> and throw ourselves straight away into difficult verbs like \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0435\u0431\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [to scorn; disdain; look down on; to disregard; ignore (rules, advice, etc<\/em>); to neglect (one’s duties, health, etc<\/em>)] that can only be followed by a word answering the question \u00ab<\/strong>\u0447\u0435\u043c<\/strong>? <\/strong>\u043a\u0435\u043c<\/strong>?\u00bb <\/strong>[\u2018with what’? \u2018with whom?’<\/em>], thus by a noun of the \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [instrumental case]. Let’s start out easy – by finding out where \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong>, the Russian word for \u2018case’, comes from. Let’s have a look in the darling \u00ab<\/strong>\u042d\u0442\u0438\u043c\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong>\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044c<\/strong>\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/strong>\u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430<\/span><\/strong>\u041c<\/strong>. <\/strong>\u0424\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong>, now shall we not?<\/p>\n

In the grammatical sense, just like the Latin word casus<\/em> it is a loan translation (calque<\/em>) from the Greek word that means \u2018I am falling’, and comes from a term used when playing dice.]<\/p>\n

Now since that’s been settled, let’s start our journey through the six cases of Russian language with the first – and most simple – of them: \u00ab<\/strong>\u0438\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [nominative cases]. So what does our dear \u0424\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u0440<\/strong> have to say about this word?<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0418\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436 – \u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u0441 \u043b\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0441\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430 <\/strong>nominativus<\/em>, \u043e \u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435\u0436\u0435<\/span>, \u043a\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0439 \u0443\u043f\u043e\u0442\u0440\u0435\u0431\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f, \u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438 \u0442\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044c \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0430\u0437\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044f \u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span>-\u043b\u0438\u0431\u043e<\/span>.\u00bb <\/strong>[Nominative case – a loan translation from the Latin word nominativus<\/em>, about the case which was used when it was only necessary to call somebody’s name.]<\/p>\n

Often you see \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0438\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/em><\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436<\/em><\/strong>\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> in the names of movies, theater shows, operas, books or at museum exhibitions. Like this one called \u00ab<\/strong><\/em>\u0413\u0423\u041b\u0410<\/span>\u0413<\/em><\/strong>. <\/em><\/strong>\u0418\u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em><\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0443\u0434<\/em><\/strong>\u0438<\/em><\/strong>\u0431\u044b\u0442<\/em><\/strong>.\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [GULAG. History, work and life.].<\/em><\/p>\n

Now that we’ve cleared up the fact that the nominative case in Russian language is\u00a0used when you’re just stating what someone or something is called (or their names), it should be added that this case answers the questions \u00ab<\/strong>\u0427\u0442\u043e<\/strong>?\u00bb<\/strong> [what?] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u041a\u0442\u043e<\/strong>?\u00bb <\/strong>[who?]. Let’s take a look at some sentences:<\/p>\n
