I even managed to find a few minutes in between rubbing on <strong>\u043a\u0440\u0435\u043c \u043e\u0442 \u0437\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong> (sunblock), watching after <strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0438<\/strong> (children), chatting with friends, and riding a few <strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (waves) on <strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0433\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0434<\/strong> (a boogie board) and shot this video.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s talk about the basic words and phrases that might be useful at the beach, should you decide to practice your Russian:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041f\u043b\u044f\u0436<\/strong> (beach) &#8211; if you speak French, this will be an easy word to memorize since that\u2019s exactly how you say it in French. It\u2019s not because they don\u2019t know the difference. If you look at the map of Russia, you will see that the only ocean Russians can go to is <strong>\u0421<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u041b\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0439 \u043e\u043a\u0435<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (Arctic Ocean). All the other very large bodies of water bordering Russia are <strong>\u043c\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong> (seas). Hence the habit that only gets broken after a few years of living in the US.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0412\u043e\u043b\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (wave) &#8211; in Russia <strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0440\u0444\u0435\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (surfers) <strong>\u043a\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u043e\u043b\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> (ride on waves) and not on <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (surf). Most people I know don\u2019t really swim in the ocean or sea, but rather <strong>\u043f\u043b\u0435\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u0432\u043e\u043b\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> (splash in the waves) close enough to shore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041f\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a<\/strong> (sand) &#8211; in my (admittedly, limited) experience on Russian Black Sea beaches, I only encountered a few that were<strong> \u043f\u0435\u0441\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u0438<\/strong> (sand beaches). The rest were <strong>\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> (pebble) ones. Here\u2019s the flip side &#8211; the best ever sea glass is found on <strong>\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u0438<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0421\u043f\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u0445<\/strong> (lifeguard) &#8211; is usually shortened to <strong>\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong>. Do not confuse with <strong>\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (rescuer, life-saver). This is a good example of how perfective and imperfective aspects carry over into nouns. <strong>\u0421\u043f\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> and <strong>\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span><\/strong> both mean to save. Yet <strong>\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (lifeguard) who <strong>\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u0438\u0437 \u0432\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (is saving someone from the water) does not become <strong>\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (a life-saver) unless he can successfully <strong>\u0441\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span><\/strong> (save) the victim from drowning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041a\u0443\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (swimsuit) &#8211; something women obsess about every year. The big issue for me is whether to buy <strong>\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u0443\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (a two-piece swimsuit) or <strong>\u0441\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439\/\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u0443\u043f\u0430\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (a one-piece). For guys the issue is non-existent. Most get some sort of <strong>\u043a\u0443\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (swimming shorts) although you can always find a few who stick to <strong>\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (speedos, swimming trunks).<\/p>\n<p>For all the joys of going to the beach &#8211;<strong> \u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0446\u0435<\/strong> (sun), <strong>\u0437\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440<\/strong> (tan), <strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (waves), <strong>\u0440\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (sea shells), <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0441\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (sand castles), a trip to the beach is not without its dangers. So don\u2019t embarrass yourself. Russians use sour cream so much that it just might help here as well.<br \/>\n<strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0442\u0435\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> &#8211; undertow &#8211; <strong>\u0437\u0430 \u0431\u0443\u0439\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u043d\u0435 \u0437\u0430\u043f\u043b\u044b\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (stay in the designated swimming area; lit: don\u2019t swim past the buoys), stay <strong>\u0433\u0434\u0435 \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u043e<\/strong> (where it\u2019s shallow)<br \/>\n<strong>\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0430-\u043b\u044e\u0434\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> &#8211; I watched <strong>\u0427<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/strong> (Jaws) and, if I remember correctly, staying close to shore doesn\u2019t help. Just watch for <strong>\u0441\u043f\u0438\u043d\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043f\u043b\u0430\u0432\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a<\/strong> (dorsal fin) and<strong> \u0431\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u00a0\u043d\u0430 \u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0433<\/strong> (run to shore) as soon as you see one.
