The weekend \u043d\u0435 \u0437\u0430 \u0433\u043e\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0438<\/strong> (is not far away). \u041b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043e, \u0436\u0430\u0440\u0430<\/span>, \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (Summer, heat, weekend)… What to do at the end of a long day spent \u043d\u0430 \u043f\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u0435<\/strong> (at the beach) or \u0432 \u0431\u0430\u0441\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u0435<\/strong> (at a pool)? Why not watch a movie about summer!<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s movie is an old Soviet comedy called \u0414\u043e\u0431\u0440\u043e<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c, \u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u041f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043c \u0432\u0445\u043e\u0434 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0449\u0451<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (Welcome, or No Trespassing). The action takes place in \u043f\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0433\u0435\u0440\u044c<\/strong> (Young Pioneers camp) also known as \u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0433\u0435\u0440\u044c<\/strong> (summer camp).<\/p>\n

In the movie, an overzealous by-the-books camp administrator Dynin is afraid that the children in his care might get hurt in a myriad of accidents. He sticks to the age-old rules and demands just one thing from the children – \u0434\u0438\u0441\u0446\u0438\u043f\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430<\/strong> (discipline). His attempts are grotesque, as when he chooses to disinfect old carnival costumes with \u0414\u0414\u0422<\/strong> (DDT) and chlorine bleach instead of allowing children to make new costumes or when Dynin asks rhetorically \u0432\u0430\u043c \u043d\u0443\u0436\u043d\u0430<\/span> \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043e\u0442\u0430<\/span> \u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u0437\u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044c\u0435 \u0434\u0435\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (do you want beauty or children\u2019s health).<\/p>\n

His efforts are constantly jeopardized by one boy, \u041a\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044f \u0418<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0438\u043d<\/strong>, who seems to make it his mission to break all the rules. Finally, the fed-up administrator sends the boy home to Grandma. Except even here Inochkin, with help from \u0432\u043e\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0435<\/strong> (camp counsellors) and fellow campers, manages to ruin Dynin\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s really fun about the old Soviet movies is trying to find hidden messages. Each movie had to be approved by \u0446\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0437\u043e\u0440<\/strong> (censor) before being released \u0432 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> (into distribution). No overt social commentary or real or even perceived criticism of authorities would pass \u0446\u0435\u043d\u0437\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong> (censorship). \u201cWelcome, or No Trespassing\u201d, however, openly pokes fun at overly-regimented and adult-driven summer camps, at a system that stifles individuality and creativity. Yet this is not why the movie originally was shelved.<\/p>\n

While criticising the system was a no-no, pointing out individual flaws was looked on rather favorably. So the solution was to introduce an individual who would \u0432\u043e\u043f\u043b\u043e\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0432 \u0441\u0435\u0431\u0435<\/span><\/strong> (embody in himself) the negative aspects. So now it\u2019s not the summer camp as an institution that\u2019s bad, but \u043e\u0442\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e-\u0432\u0437\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (particular) camp and a particular type of camp administrators.<\/p>\n

Watching an old movie is also great for picking up words and phrases that are commonly used in conversations. Here are some phrases you can pick up from \u201cWelcome, or No Trespassing\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u041a\u043e\u0433\u0434\u0430<\/span> \u044f \u0435\u043c, \u044f \u0433\u043b\u0443\u0445 \u0438 \u043d\u0435\u043c<\/strong> (When I\u2019m eating, I am deaf and dumb) – Russians are skilled in the art of \u0437\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0431\u0435\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u044b<\/strong> (chats around a dinner table). It is a mystery how they get so good since as children they are strongly discouraged from talking at meal times.<\/p>\n

\u0412 \u0433\u0440\u043e\u0431 \u0432\u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to send to an early grave) – this is usually a phrase adults reserve for children. When a child \u0432\u0433\u043e\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u0432 \u0433\u0440\u043e\u0431<\/strong> his elders, his behavior is lacking and causes his family a lot of grief.<\/p>\n

\u041a\u0440\u043e\u0432\u044c \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to spoil one\u2019s blood) – this is another expression to describe the consequences of someone\u2019s bad behavior.<\/p>\n

\u0422\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u0438\u0439 \u0447\u0430\u0441<\/strong> (quiet hour) – the belief is that children need \u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u0438\u0439 \u0447\u0430\u0441<\/strong> to rest after all this running around. The practice stops once a child goes to school at age 7. But summer camps are an exception and have a mandatory \u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u0438\u0439 \u0447\u0430\u0441<\/strong> even for teenagers. And it does not mean quietly reading a book or playing board games. Instead, it means changing into PJs, getting in bed and actually sleeping (or pretending to).<\/p>\n

\u0425\u043b\u044e<\/span>\u043f\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (a sissy) – someone who whimpers is said to \u0445\u043b\u044e<\/span>\u043f\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043e\u043c<\/strong> (sniffle), so it\u2019s just logical that a wimp would be called \u0445\u043b\u044e\u043f\u0438\u043a<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u0421\u0438\u043c\u0443\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0442<\/strong> (a malingerer) – someone who imitates medical symptoms. Do not confuse it with\u00a0\u0441\u0438\u043c\u0443\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u043a\u0440<\/strong> (simulacrum), even though both come from the same Latin root \u201csimulatio\u201d meaning \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/em><\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong> (affectation), \u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u043c\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (appearance)<\/p>\n

\u0412 \u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 \u0432\u0441\u044f \u0441\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430<\/strong> (All the strength is in the liquid) – Russians do not have much regard for eating \u0432 \u0441\u0443\u0445\u043e\u043c\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (dry food), like snacks or sandwiches. A balanced meal must include \u0441\u0443\u043f<\/strong> (soup) because it\u2019s good for your stomach.<\/p>\n

\u0417\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to snack) – this word has a couple of related, but different meanings. First, it can refer to the process of having a light meal or a snack. Remember, appetizers are called \u0437\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/strong> in Russian. On the other hand, it means taking a bite right after a shot of vodka.<\/p>\n

\u041c\u044b \u0441\u0438\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043c \u0432 \u0437\u0430\u0431\u0435\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0435, \u0437\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0435\u043c<\/strong> – We are at a diner, having a snack.
\n\u041f\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 \u043f\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u043d\u0435 \u0437\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044b\u0432\u0430\u044e\u0442<\/strong> – Do not take a bite after the first drink.<\/p>\n

\u041c\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (event) – this is a word used frequently in Russian officialese. Anything and everything can be \u043c\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f\u0442\u0438\u0435<\/strong>, from \u043c\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u043e \u0431\u043e\u0440\u044c\u0431\u0435<\/span> \u0441 \u0430\u043b\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043c\u043e\u043c<\/strong> (an action against alcoholism) to \u0442\u043e\u0440\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043c\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (a celebratory event) or \u043a\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043c\u0435\u0440\u043e\u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (cultural event).<\/p>\n

\u0410 \u0447\u0442\u043e \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u0432\u044b \u0437\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044c \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0435\u0442\u0435?<\/strong> (What are you doing here?) – this is the only phrase uttered by a strange boy with \u0441\u0430\u0447\u043e<\/span>\u043a<\/strong> (a butterfly net) throughout the movie. Stripped down to its essentials, it\u2019s \u0447\u0442\u043e \u0432\u044b \u0437\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044c \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0435\u0442\u0435<\/strong> (what are you doing here) – a very useful phrase indeed and hopefully the one that will not get you the \u0434\u0430 \u0438\u0434\u0438<\/span> \u0442\u044b!<\/strong> (why don\u2019t you disappear) response like the one the boy gets in the movie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
