Can you believe it, \u0443\u0436\u0435<\/span> \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0446 \u0438\u044e<\/span>\u043d\u044f<\/strong> (it\u2019s the end of June already)! \u041a\u0430\u043a \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e \u0432\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044f \u043b\u0435\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442!<\/strong> (How time flies!) For many of our US readers, next week will be spent travelling and celebrating and then travelling some more. Which means getting delayed or stuck in traffic is virtually unavoidable in the next few days. Which, in turn, means a great opportunity to practice \u0433\u043b\u0430\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b \u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (verbs of motion)!<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s concentrate on just 3 of them this time – \u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0438\u0434\u0442\u0438<\/span><\/strong> (to walk), \u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u0438\u0442\u044c\/\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to ride), and \u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u043b\u0435\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to fly).<\/p>\n

First thing first, Russian language is very particular when it comes to choosing which verb of motion to use. In English we can say stuff like \u201cI\u2019m going to Bahamas this weekend\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m going to work in my husband\u2019s car since mine is still in the shop\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m just going over to the neighbors\u201d. In Russian we have to use a different verb for each mode of transportation, in this case – \u043b\u0435\u0447\u0443<\/span>, \u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0443, \u0438\u0434\u0443<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Next up are conjugation tables. You have to memorize them. There\u2019s no way around it, I\u2019m afraid. If you do know a way, \u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0448\u0443<\/span>, \u043f\u043e\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0443\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/strong> (pretty please) let us all know! And now it\u2019s time for the most challenging part. Which verb from each pair to use; whether to go with the indeterminate \u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c, \u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u0438\u0442\u044c, \u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> or opt for the determinate \u0438\u0434\u0442\u0438<\/span>, \u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c, \u043b\u0435\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The rule of thumb is if in English you would use Present Continuous<\/span>, then use determinate verbs<\/span> of motion; use indeterminate<\/span> verbs for when you\u2019d use Present Simple<\/span> in English.<\/p>\n

If at this point your flight is still delayed or you are in a stand-still traffic, continue practicing. If you can\u2019t come up with an entire sentence in Russian, say it in English (or your native language) replacing only the verb with an appropriate Russian verb of motion.<\/p>\n

I \u043b\u0435\u0447\u0443<\/strong> home. But really, I \u0445\u043e\u0436\u0443<\/strong> back and forth along the terminal waiting for my flight. Every year I swear not \u043b\u0435\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> on holidays!<\/p>\n

I \u0435\u0434\u0443<\/strong> to see my in-laws. Ok, I am not exactly \u0435\u0434\u0443<\/strong>, but mostly crawling through this bumper-to-bumper traffic. I \u0435\u0437\u0436\u0443<\/strong> on this road a lot, but have never seen traffic like this before.<\/p>\n
