Later, it would be the first Russian-language movie I bought on DVD, and after all these years and countless viewings it still holds its charm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u042d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0442 \u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043c \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u043e\u0437\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u043d\u0435 \u043b\u044e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/b> (&#8220;One can&#8217;t help adoring this movie&#8221;)!<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s by the legendary director Leonid Gaidai with a cast of equally legendary stars (several of whom were Gaidai regulars). The Brezhnev-era production is packed with satirical in-jokes about life in the USSR &#8212; and Russian <b>\u043a\u0440\u044b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0435 \u0432\u044b\u0440\u0430\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/b> (&#8220;catchphrases&#8221;) galore &#8212; yet much of the humor is universal. It <a title=\"Start Your Week with a Song\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/start-your-week-with-a-song\/\">added some enduring hits to the repertoire of Soviet pop-music<\/a>. And on top of all this, it boasts an impeccable literary pedigree, being an adaptation of a 1935 play by Mikhail Bulgakov of <i>Master and Margarita<\/i> fame.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said, what&#8217;s not to love?<\/p>\n<p>Warning: The rest of this post is intended to help students who might want to watch the full movie on DVD or online &#8212; so there are tons of plot-spoilers!<\/p>\n<p>The movie opens with a brief black-and-white segment that introduces <b>\u0428<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043a<\/b>, a geeky <b>\u0438\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/b> (&#8220;inventor&#8221;) who&#8217;s working on a complicated machine in his living room (actor <b>\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u0414\u0435\u043c\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u043d\u043a\u043e<\/b> had played a similar-but-not-identical &#8220;Shurik&#8221; in two previous Gaidai films). The guy is a classic absent-minded professor whose attention is easily distracted by a <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\" title=\"maybe a little nod to ''Behemoth'' from \u00ab\u041c\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440 \u0438 \u041c\u0430\u0440\u0433\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0442\u0430\u00bb -- which was an instant cult-classic after finally being published in 1966\">mischievous black cat<\/span>. The machine overheats and <b>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0436\u0438\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u0432\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span> \u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0438 \u0432 \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0435<\/b> (&#8220;blows out all the building&#8217;s fuses&#8221;) &#8212; and not for the first time, either!<\/p>\n<p>As Shurik hurries downstairs to replace the fuses, he&#8217;s intercepted by <b>\u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d \u0412\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043d\u0448\u0430<\/b>, the <b>\u0443\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0434\u043e\u043c<\/b> (&#8220;building manager&#8221;; &#8220;super&#8221;). The Bunsha character (one of two roles played by <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u042e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0439 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u042f<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043b\u0435\u0432<\/b>) is meant to satirize a &#8220;peculiarly Soviet&#8221; stereotype &#8212; the bureaucratic, conformist sort that Bulgakov always treated mercilessly. (Nowadays, though maybe not in the 1970s, the pejorative slang <b>\u0441\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a<\/b> might be used for such a person.)<\/p>\n<p>However, English speakers will instantly recognize Bunsha as a kindred spirit of such characters as Basil Fawlty; and Maj. Frank Burns from <i>M*A*S*H<\/i>; and every &#8220;Principal McDouchebag&#8221; in practically every high-school comedy ever made by Hollywood. Which is to say, Bunsha is a <b>\u043f\u0435\u0434\u0430\u043d\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b> (&#8220;nit-picking&#8221;), <b>\u043b\u0438\u0448\u0451\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0440\u0430<\/b> (&#8220;devoid of humor&#8221;), <b>\u043e\u0433\u0440\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b> (&#8220;straitlaced&#8221;), and <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\" title=\"from \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u0434\u0443\u0442\u044c\u00bb, ''to inflate''\"><b>\u043d\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0439<\/b><\/span> (&#8220;pompous&#8221;) <b>\u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a<\/b>. Above all else, he&#8217;s proudly incapable of doing the smallest thing <b>\u00ab\u0431\u0435\u0437 \u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0446\u0438\u0438 \u0441\u043e\u043e\u0442\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443\u0449\u0438\u0445 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u0430\u043d\u043e\u0432\u00bb<\/b> (&#8220;without the sanction of the proper state agencies&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the inventor is undiscouraged by Bunsha&#8217;s scolding, and he hurries back to test the machine again. This time around, there&#8217;s a huge shower of sparks, <b>\u0428<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430 <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\" title=\"lit., ''it strikes [him] with current''\">\u0443\u0434\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u043c<\/span><\/b> (&#8220;Shurik gets an electric shock&#8221;), he falls unconscious to the floor&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and suddenly everything switches from B&amp;W to &#8220;glorious Technicolor&#8221; as we go to an on-location <b>\u043a\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0441\u044a\u0451\u043c\u043a\u0430 \u043d\u0430 \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0435<\/b> (&#8220;movie-shoot by the seashore&#8221;). A beautiful redheaded actress <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u043e \u0444\u043b\u0438\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u0441 \u0440\u0435\u0436\u0438\u0441\u0441\u0451\u0440\u043e\u043c<\/b> (&#8220;blatantly flirts with the director&#8221;) as she belts out the first of the film&#8217;s hit songs, <b>\u00ab<span style=\"background-color: yellow;\" title=\"Note that  \u00ab\u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb = ''to ring'' in the sense of bells\/telephones, but \u00ab\u0437\u0432\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb is ''to jangle metallically, like keys or coins''\">\u0417\u0432\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442<\/span> \u044f\u043d\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\" title=\"Derives from \u00ab\u0432\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb ''to twist'', which conjugates like \u00ab\u043f\u0438\u0442\u044c\u00bb, ''to drink'': \u00ab\u044f \u0432\u044c\u044e, \u0442\u044b \u0432\u044c\u0451\u0448\u044c...\u00bb\">\u0432\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/b> (&#8220;Your ears ring from the January blizzard&#8221;). Or, rather, she (badly) lip-synchs it, because the vocals were actually recorded by pop-star Nina Brodskaya:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u0417\u0432\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0442 \u042f\u043d\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0432\u044c\u044e\u0433\u0430 (\u0438\u0437 \u0445\/\u0444 \u0418\u0432\u0430\u043d \u0412\u0430\u0441\u0438\u043b\u044c\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447...)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q1qzEiEUgO0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>[Look closely in the video and you&#8217;ll spot director <b>\u041b\u0435\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434 \u0413\u0430\u0439\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439<\/b> himself in a cameo as the lighting technician!]<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, we soon learn that the redhead (<b>\u041d\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u044f \u0421\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0437\u043d\u0451\u0432\u0430<\/b>) is Shurik&#8217;s fickle wife <b>\u0417<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430<\/b>, who returns home just long enough to tell Shurik that he&#8217;s about to become the latest in her string of ex-husbands.<\/p>\n<p>Shurik <b>\u043f\u0430\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u043e \u0432\u0437\u0434\u044b\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u00ab\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a, \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a, \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a&#8230;\u00bb<\/b> (&#8220;passively sighs, &#8216;Oh, well &#8212; so that&#8217;s that.&#8221;) In turn, Zina gripes that it&#8217;s <b>\u00ab\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a-\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u043b\u0438\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/b> (&#8220;somewhat ill-mannered&#8221;) if a husband <b>\u00ab\u043d\u0435 \u0443\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0435\u0442 \u0441\u043a\u0430\u043d\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/b> (&#8220;doesn&#8217;t make a big fuss&#8221;) after his wife announces that she&#8217;s dumping him for her movie director!<\/p>\n<p>With Zina gone, we meet a few more modern Muscovites. First, there&#8217;s the super&#8217;s Gorgonish wife Uliana (\u041d\u0430\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u044f \u041a\u0440\u0430\u0447\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f) &#8212; a shrieking <b>\u0441\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/b> (&#8220;gossipy woman&#8221;) who wears a different-colored <b>\u043f\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a<\/b> (&#8220;wig&#8221;) in every scene, and naturally offers her opinion on Shurik&#8217;s domestic troubles:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>\u0423\u043b\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0430: <span style=\"background-color: yellow;\" title=\"Here, the singular imperative \u00ab\u0431\u0443\u0434\u044c\u00bb equals \u00ab\u0435\u0441\u043b\u0438 \u0431\u044b\u00bb, marking a contrary-to-fact ''if'' statement\">\u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u0439 \u0436\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> \u0431\u044b \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435 \u0443<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u043b\u0430!<\/b><br \/>\n<b>\u0428<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043a: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0415<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438 \u0431\u044b \u0412<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u042b<\/span> \u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u043c\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u0436\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span> \u0431\u044b \u043f\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u043b\u0441\u044f.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Uliana: If I were your wife, I&#8217;d run off, too!<br \/>\nShurik: If <i>you<\/i> were my wife, I&#8217;d hang myself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;re also introduced to <b>\u0416\u043e\u0440\u0436 \u041c\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/b> (<b>\u041b\u0435\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434 \u041a\u0443\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043b\u0451\u0432<\/b>), a notorious professional <b>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440<\/b> (&#8220;thief&#8221;). Suave, handsome, <b>\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b> (&#8220;witty&#8221;), and extremely <b>\u043d\u0430\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0447\u0438\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/b> (&#8220;resourceful&#8221;), George is the <b>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043e\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0443 \u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043d\u0448\u0435<\/b> (&#8220;complete opposite of Ivan Bunsha&#8221;) &#8212; so, by the inexorable laws of film comedy, they&#8217;re fated to spend a great deal of time together.<\/p>\n<p>If Bunsha lives by the motto <b>\u0412\u0441\u0451, \u0447\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> \u043d\u0435 \u0440\u0430\u0437\u0440\u0435\u0448\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> &#8212; \u0437\u0430\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0449\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span><\/b> (&#8220;Everything not [expressly] permitted is forbidden&#8221;), George&#8217;s philosophy is something closer to <b>\u0417\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d \u0441\u0443\u0449\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u0442, \u0447\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u044b \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span> \u043c\u043e\u0433\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> \u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> \u043d\u0430\u0440\u0443\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/b> (&#8220;The law exists so that we can break it&#8221;). And today his scheme is to <b>\u0432\u0437\u043b\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043a\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0443<\/b> (&#8220;break-and-enter the flat&#8221;) of Shurik&#8217;s next-door neighbor, an affluent dental surgeon who can afford Italian suede jackets and imported cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the dentist&#8217;s apartment, George soon finds a huge pile of rubles &#8212; plus bottles of scotch, and one of those novelty ballpoint pens with a sexy woman who loses her swimsuit when you turn it upside down.<\/p>\n<p>Pocketing the cash &#8212; and the pen, which we&#8217;ll see again later &#8212; George offers the audience a bit of financial advice that parodies a real-life Soviet slogan:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 400px; margin: 20px;\">\n<p><b>\u00ab\u0413\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u0430\u043d\u0435! \u0425\u0440\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435 \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044c\u0433\u0438 \u0432 \u0441\u0431\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0435! <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0415<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0438, \u043a\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e, \u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span> \u0443 \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c&#8230;\u00bb<\/b> (&#8220;Citizens!
