Ah, summer, prime vacation season not just in Russia, but in many other countries as well. \u042f \u0436\u0434\u0443 \u043d\u0435 \u0434\u043e\u0436\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044c<\/strong> (I can\u2019t wait) for my vacation that\u2019s just a few days away. I can\u2019t even remember the last time \u044f \u0431\u044b\u043b\u0430 \u0432 \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u0435 (I was on vacation). How about you?<\/p>\n

If you are an \u0430\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0446<\/strong> (American male) or \u0430\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (American female), then \u044f \u0433\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430 \u043f\u043e\u0441\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (I am ready to wager a bet) that you do not get enough time off from work. \u0412\u0441\u0435 \u0437\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442, \u0447\u0442\u043e \u0430\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0446\u044b – \u0442\u0440\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (Everyone knows that Americans are workaholics). Besides, American \u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/strong> (vacation) is just two weeks long. This is not nearly enough time to \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span> \u043e\u0442\u0434\u043e\u0445\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (rest well).<\/p>\n

Still, we use what we can, \u0443\u0442\u0435\u0448\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span> \u043c\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u044c\u044e \u043e \u043f\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (consoling ourselves with thoughts of retirement). But you are probably not so interested in my views on vacation policies. Instead, you might be wondering where am I going this year.<\/p>\n

Before I start answering this question, let\u2019s review two words that Russians use when they talk about vacations. The first word is \u043a\u0430\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0443\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (school break). These are taken by students and politicians and occur several times throughout the year. Of course, \u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043a\u0430\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0443\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (summer break) is the longest and most anticipated.<\/p>\n

The second word is \u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/strong>. \u041e<\/span>\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/strong> is a vacation taken by people who work, including teachers. It comes from the verb \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to let go). By the way, Russian \u0422\u0440\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u041a\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u043a\u0441<\/strong> (Labor Code) specifies the length of \u0435\u0436\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043e\u043f\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0432\u0430\u0435\u043c\u044b\u0435 \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (annual paid vacations) at \u0434\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c \u043a\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u0434\u043d\u0435\u0439<\/strong> (twenty eight calendar days).<\/p>\n

And now, while those of us who live in the US, are sighing wistfully, let\u2019s review some helpful vacation-related phrases and, along the way, find out where I am going in just a few days. \u0417\u0430\u0440\u043f\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/strong> (paycheck) that you get for the time you are on vacation is called \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> (vacation pay). Unlike in the US, in Russia \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> are paid before you go on vacation. I think it\u2019s very thoughtful since you need \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044c\u0433\u0438<\/strong> (money) to \u0437\u0430\u0431\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0433\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0443<\/strong> (make hotel reservations), \u043a\u0443\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (buy tickets), and, unless you are at a \u043f\u0430\u043d\u0441\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> (all-inclusive resort), pay for \u0435\u0434\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (food), \u0440\u0430\u0437\u0432\u043b\u0435\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (entertainment), \u044d\u043a\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (tours). But even with an all-inclusive deal, you need money to buy \u0441\u0443\u0432\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (souvenirs).<\/p>\n

But what if you don\u2019t plan on travelling anywhere for your vacation this year? If you are staycationing, then you can just say \u044f \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0434\u0443<\/span> \u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a \u0434\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0430<\/strong> (I am spending my vacation at home). Which sounds pretty boring, so you need to emphasize all the cool things you\u2019re going to do:<\/p>\n
