I stayed up very late last night (ok, now that you&#8217;re reading it, it was 2 night ago) watching&#8230; <strong>\u043d\u0435 \u041e\u043b\u0438\u043c\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0438\u0433\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (not the Olympic Games), but the landing of Curiosity on Mars.<\/p>\n<p>Have you seen it? Wasn\u2019t the whole thing simply <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0442\u0440\u044f\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (mind-blowing)? Or as <a href=\"http:\/\/ria.ru\/science\/20120806\/717553887.html\" target=\"_blank\">one Russian news outlet<\/a> put it, it was a <strong>\u0447\u0443\u043c\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f<\/strong>\u00a0(crazy, off-the-hook) landing.<\/p>\n<p>I feel that Curiosity\u2019s landing was as seminal as the launch of <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u0438\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (the first artificial satellite aka the Sputnik). Back then the Russian word <strong>\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong>, which means \u201cfellow traveler\u201d, firmly established itself in the English language.<\/p>\n<p>Most Russian online news portals use the English \u201cCuriosity\u201d although some transliterate it into Cyrillic as \u201c<strong>\u041a\u044c\u044e\u0440\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u0442\u0438<\/strong>\u201d instead of translating it literally as <strong>\u043b\u044e\u0431\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/strong>. Martian rover is sometimes translated as <strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0435\u0440<\/strong>, but <strong>\u043c\u0430\u0440\u0441\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> seems to be more common. <strong>\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0441\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> is a compound word formed by adding the noun<strong> \u0445\u043e\u0434<\/strong> (here: motion) to the planet\u2019s name, <strong>\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0441<\/strong> (Mars). Now that you know this, you will have no problem translating <strong>\u043b\u0443\u043d\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> and <strong>\u0432\u0435\u043d\u0435\u0440\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> which are both examples of<strong> \u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0435\u0442\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/strong>. Heck, you might even have a <strong>\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0434\u0435\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> in your garage (ok, a hint here: <strong>\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span><\/strong> means \u201ceverywhere\u201d) although it\u2019s not nearly as cool as Curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>But I digress&#8230; Let\u2019s talk about Curiosity\u2019s big and early accomplishment and the reason I stayed up so late. So, Curiosity landed. How to say \u201cto land\u201d in Russian? It depends on where exactly you land and how formal you want to sound:<\/p>\n<p>If you are on an airplane, you would say <strong>\u041c\u043e\u0439 \u0441\u0430\u043c\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0442 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u0428\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0435\u0432\u043e<\/strong> (My plane landed in Sheremetyevo). Or, <strong>\u041f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0430 \u0432\u043e\u0441\u044c\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u043c\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442 \u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u0430, \u0413\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043d \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0435<\/strong> (After 108 minutes of flight, Gagarin landed in a field).<\/p>\n<p>However, since the word <strong>\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong> means not just \u201cland\u201d, but also \u201cEarth\u201d, you cannot say that a moon landing is <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043d\u0430 \u041b\u0443\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span><\/strong> (not if you want to be all technical anyway). So what did Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin do back in 1969? <strong>\u041e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043b\u0443\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c<\/strong> (They landed on the Moon). <strong>\u041f\u0440\u0438\u043b\u0443\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> is a good, but rarely used, word to know. However, the format of <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438- + name of the planet + -\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> doesn\u2019t hold when we try to apply it to other events. While words such as <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0435\u043d\u0435\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f, \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0430\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> and <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0435\u0442\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> sound like fun, they are not real words.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, if we are striving for technical accuracy, we will use the verb <strong>\u0441\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> (to land) or a phrase <strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432\u0435\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (to land) as in<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0421\u0430\u043c\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0442 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u0430 \u041d\u044c\u044e-\u0419<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043a-\u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u043b <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044d<\/span>\u043a\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043f\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0443 \u0432 \u0422\u0430\u0433\u0430\u043d\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0435<\/strong> (Flight New York-Moscow made an emergency landing in Taganrog) or<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0441\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434 \u201cCuriosity\u201d \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u043b \u043f\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0443 \u043d\u0430 \u043f\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0445\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 \u041a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (Mars rover Curiosity landed on the surface of the Red planet).<\/p>\n<p>But<strong> \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0437\u0435\u043c\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> remains a layman&#8217;s term for the process. The big so-far unanswered question is <strong>\u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c \u043b\u0438 \u0436\u0438\u0437\u043d\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u041c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0435<\/strong> (is there life on Mars) or <strong>\u0431\u044b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u043b\u0438 \u0436\u0438\u0437\u043d\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u041c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0435<\/strong> (was there life on Mars).<\/p>\n<p>The news articles, including this <strong>\u0438\u043d\u0444\u043e\u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0444\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/ria.ru\/infografika\/20111126\/497941094.html\" target=\"_blank\">infographics<\/a>) about Curiosity have lots of very useful vocabulary. A must-know phrases are <strong>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u0440 \u0413<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u043b\u0430<\/strong> (the Gale crater) and <strong>\u043d\u0435\u0439\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u043f\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440<\/strong> (neutron spectrometer) since it describes a vital piece of equipment and Russian contribution to the project (it&#8217;s actually used to detect presence of water).
