The structure of the negative particle <strong>\u043d\u0435<\/strong> + a verb is simple, repetitive and grating. I am very fortunate that my own child doesn\u2019t do this to me. Not to say he is never in one of those moods. It\u2019s just ever since he\u2019s been <strong>\u043e\u0442 \u0433\u043e\u0440\u0448\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u0434\u0432\u0430 \u0432\u0435\u0440\u0448\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (knee-high to a grasshopper) he would simply say <strong>\u044f \u043e\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e!<\/strong> (I contradict! or I refuse! or I deny!) instead, which always brings a smile to my face.<\/p>\n<p>But he also still uses <strong>\u043d\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e<\/strong> as a way of saying that something is <strong>\u043d\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong> (not allowed). Which makes perfect, if grammatically incorrect, sense since we all know that the word <strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e<\/strong> (allowed) exists and the word <strong>\u043b\u044c\u0437\u044f<\/strong> doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of ways to form <strong>\u0430\u043d\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043c\u044b<\/strong> (antonyms) in Russian. One is to memorize word pairs of opposites:<\/p>\n<p><strong>C<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 &#8211; \u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (strong &#8211; weak)<br \/>\n<strong>\u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u044b\u0439 &#8211; \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u043b\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (fast &#8211; slow)<br \/>\n<strong>\u0411\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 &#8211; \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (large &#8211; small), etc.<br \/>\n<strong>\u041f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 &#8211; \u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (durable &#8211; breakable)<\/p>\n<p>But if you don\u2019t have enough time or desire to do twice as much work, you can frequently get by adding the prefix <strong>\u043d\u0435<\/strong> to the original word:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 &#8211; \u043d\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u044b\u0439 &#8211; \u043d\u0435\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0440\u044b\u0439<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 &#8211; \u043d\u0435\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 &#8211; \u043d\u0435\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If this approach works, you might be wondering, then why bother memorizing the pairs of opposites in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>There are two good reasons and one excellent reason.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good Reason #1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You might not be forming an opposite. I already mentioned that the opposite for <strong>\u043d\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span><\/strong> (not allowed) is <strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e<\/strong> (allowed) because the word <strong>\u043b\u044c\u0437\u044f<\/strong> doesn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>Some other words include<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u043d\u0435\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> &#8211; impassable<br \/>\n<strong>\u043d\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0448\u043b\u0438\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/strong> &#8211; sloppy<br \/>\n<strong>\u043d\u0435\u0438\u0437\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> &#8211; unavoidable<br \/>\n<strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432\u043c\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; unbearable, beyond endurance<br \/>\n<strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> &#8211; innocent. Do not confuse this with the adjective <strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u00a0which doesn&#8217;t mean guilty, but rather &#8220;of or related to wine&#8221; as in <strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043c\u0430\u0433\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (wine store). The opposite of <strong>\u043d\u0435\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> is <strong>\u0432\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439 <\/strong>or<strong> \u0432\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0439<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>\u043d\u0435\u0433\u043e\u0434\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> &#8211; to be indignant<br \/>\n<strong>\u043d\u0435\u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043a\u043e<\/strong> &#8211; a little bit (although the opposite of <strong>\u043d\u0435\u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e<\/strong> (a little bit) is <strong>\u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e<\/strong> (a lot)).
