But wait, Georgia is not Russia! Russian is not its official language. It seems that unless you are interested in geopolitics, Georgia is outside of the scope of this blog.\u00a0Except Georgian influence on Russian history and culture is disproportionately large for such a small country.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Russia\u2019s most celebrated authors, including <strong>\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u041f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438\u043d, \u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b \u041b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u043e\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432 \u0438 \u041b\u0435\u0432 \u0422\u043e\u043b\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (Alexandr Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov and Leo Tolstoy) were fascinated by and wrote about <strong>\u041a\u0430\u0432\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437<\/strong> (Caucasus), a geographical region that includes parts of southern Russia and all of Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of the bravest, most-distinguished and best-remembered of the generals from the War of 1812,<strong> \u043b\u0435\u0433\u0435\u043d\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u041f\u0451\u0442\u0440 \u0411\u0430\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (the legendary Pyotr Bagration), was the scion of the royal Bagrationi family of Georgia. In case you wonder how legendary this guy was, Napoleon once famously said that Russia had no good generals, except for Bagration. Russian soldiers played on the general&#8217;s name calling him <strong>\u0431\u043e\u0433 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0438 \u043e\u043d<\/strong> (he is the god of army).<\/p>\n<p>As you likely know, <strong>\u0418<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u0444 \u0421\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u043d<\/strong> (Joseph Stalin) was <strong>\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0435\u0446<\/strong> (a native of) Georgia. Some of his <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0448\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (henchmen), including <strong>\u0413\u0440\u0438\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0439 \u201c\u0421\u0435\u0440\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u201d \u041e\u0440\u0434\u0436\u043e\u043d\u0438\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0437\u0435<\/strong> (Gregory \u201cSergo\u201d Ordzhonikidze) and <strong>\u041b\u0430\u0432\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u0438\u0439 \u0411<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (Lavrentiy Beria), were also from there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0417\u0443\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0431 \u0426\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0438<\/strong> (Zurab Tsereteli), the famous gigantomaniac <strong>\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043f\u0442\u043e\u0440<\/strong> (sculptor) whose work includes the highly controversial <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (monument) to <strong>\u041f\u0451\u0442\u0440 \u0412\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (Peter the Great) in Moscow is also from Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Many Russians know and love the wonderful singer and actor <strong>\u0412\u0430\u0445\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0433 \u041a\u0438\u043a\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0437\u0435<\/strong> (Vakhtang Kikabidze) and the talented and beautiful actress <strong>\u0421\u043e\u0444\u0438\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> \u0427\u0438\u0430\u0443\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0438<\/strong> (Sofiko Chiaureli). But few know that <strong>\u0413\u0435<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u0438\u0439 \u0411\u0430\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (Georgiy Balanchin), the famous <strong>\u0445\u043e\u0440\u0435<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0440\u0430\u0444 \u0438 \u0431\u0430\u043b\u0435\u0442\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440<\/strong> (choreographer and balletmaster) was of Georgian ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>The list of famous <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (male Georgians) and <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (female Georgians) can go on and on, really. It includes <strong>\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> (scientists), <strong>\u0438\u043d\u0436\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (engineers), <strong>\u0433\u0435\u043d\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (generals) (including the first foreign-born soldier to become the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), <strong>\u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u043e\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (composers), <strong>\u043f\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (poets), <strong>\u043f\u0438\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438<\/strong> (writers), and world-class <strong>\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0441\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (athletes).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Apart from so many famous people who influenced Russian history and culture, Georgia gave something else that most Russians know and love &#8211; <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0445\u043d\u044f<\/strong> (Georgian cuisine). Many of its dishes are very popular in Russia, including <strong>\u0445\u0430\u0447\u0430\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0438<\/strong> (khachapuri, the cheese bread), <strong>\u0441\u0430\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u0438<\/strong> (satsivi, chicken in walnut sauce), <strong>\u0446\u044b\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u043a \u0442\u0430\u0431\u0430\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (Georgian-style grilled chicken), the intensely hot <strong>\u0430\u0434\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (adjika or ajvar sauce), and <strong>\u043a\u043e\u0437\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0438<\/strong>, a type of sweets that, at their best are delicious and healthy and at their worst, <strong>\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> (overly sweet) and spell death to your dental work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rAVZJYrgWhY\">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rAVZJYrgWhY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is much more about <strong>\u0413\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (Georgia) that comes to mind, including <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430<\/strong> (Georgian wines), the real ones, not <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (fakes) flooding the markets; philosophical <strong>\u0433\u0440\u0443\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (Georgian toasts), beautiful <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0438<\/strong> (songs) and <strong>\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0446\u044b<\/strong> (dances). Again, all these have, at one time or another, left their marks in Russian culture and language.<\/p>\n<p>It seems only appropriate to watch, later this week, one of the kindest, most humorous and most beloved Soviet movies that was directed by a famous Georgian <strong>\u0440\u0435\u0436\u0438\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0440<\/strong> (movie director) and starred a no-less famous Georgian <strong>\u0430\u043a\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0440<\/strong> (actor). This movie is so well-remembered, that is has not one, not two, but <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">three<\/span> <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (monuments) dedicated to it. One is in Russia; another &#8211; in Armenia and the third one is, of course, in Georgia.
