It works, it really works! I scored 107 out of 120 on the TOEFL test <em>(my university of preference in the USA asks only more than 68 &#8211; but let&#8217;s not spoil things with talking about what&#8217;ll happen only <strong>\u00ab\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 \u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span> \u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u043a \u0432 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [after yet another (little) year in Russia]&#8230;).<\/em> Some of the readers of this blog might argue &#8211; and most correctly, too &#8211; that it wasn&#8217;t really the Russian <strong>\u00ab\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> which helped me in only making 13 points worth of mistakes, but the fact that I&#8217;m almost fluent in English. <strong>\u00ab\u041c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442 \u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c, \u0432\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span> \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442 \u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [maybe, quite <em>(possibly)<\/em> maybe] is what I say to them as I add this: But who can exclude a little help of <strong>\u00ab\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> in a one-time case as this one? What we need to make a firm conclusion is a <strong>\u00ab\u0448\u0438\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0438\u0439 \u0444\u0443\u043d\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442\u00bb <\/strong>[broad statistical foundation] &#8211; anyone out there willing to try <strong>\u00ab\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>in their own lives?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00ab\u0410\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044c \u0438 \u043d\u0430 \u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u043c \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0435 \u0432\u0441\u0435\u043c \u0432\u0430\u043c \u043f\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0442!\u00bb <\/strong>&#8211; [Perhaps all of you&#8217;ll really get lucky!]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Today I thought we&#8217;d continue to talk about luck; or more specifically: <strong>\u00ab\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0432\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian luck]. You might be seeing this Russian word for <em>\u2018luck&#8217;<\/em> for the very first time &#8211; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=%D0%92%D0%B5%D0%B7%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5&amp;redirect=no\" target=\"_blank\">\u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [luck; good fortune], whereas you&#8217;ve both read, heard and pronounced the word <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%92%D0%B5%D0%B7%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5\" target=\"_blank\">\u00ab\u0443\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0430\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [luck; success; fortune; stroke of good luck; good innings] many times before. This is the word most commonly used when wishing each other <em>\u2018good luck&#8217;<\/em> in Russian: <strong>\u00ab\u0423\u0434\u0430\u0447\u0438!\u00bb<\/strong> [note that when wishing someone something in Russian you always put what you&#8217;re wishing them in GENITIVE &#8211; thus turning <strong>\u00ab\u0443\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> into <strong>\u00ab\u0443\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> &#8211; don&#8217;t forget!]. But is it worth knowing also <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> as it comes from the verb <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> which is used in the expression <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0442 \u043a\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>-\u043d\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [someone is lucky; someone has luck]. And since people &#8211; even Russians &#8211; tend to get lucky from time to time, it is an expression that can come in handy ever so often. The verb <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>is one of those extremely interesting <strong>\u00ab\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b \u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [verbs of motion], and being as such it is imperfect and only in ONE DIRECTION <em>(for movements in many directions this verb has a close friend: <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>). <\/em><strong>\u00ab\u0412\u0435\u0437\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> can be translated into English &#8211; apart from into <em>\u2018to have luck&#8217;<\/em> &#8211; as <em>\u2018to wheel; carry; tote; trundle&#8217;<\/em>. When used to tell of someone having luck the following is important to know: <strong>1)<\/strong> always put this verb in THIRD PERSON SINGULAR, i.e. <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: thus present tense <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> turns into past tense as <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0437\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>; <strong>2) <\/strong>the sentence&#8217;s SUBJECT should always be in DATIVE, for example: <strong>\u00ab\u0442\u0435\u0431\u0435 \u0432\u0435\u0437\u0451\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [you have luck], <strong>\u00ab\u043c\u043d\u0435 \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u0435\u0437\u0451\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [I don&#8217;t have any luck] and <strong>\u00ab\u0438\u043c \u043f\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0437\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[they were lucky; had luck]. Using dative is a very smart and subconscious Russian way of taking away all personal responsibility from the subject of the sentence, which means that to have luck in Russian (or why not say <em>\u2018to have Russian luck&#8217;<\/em>?) doesn&#8217;t really have anything to do with actions you may or may not have taken.
