And \u00ab\u0441\u0434\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [pass] it? I didn’t just pose this question – I actually tried it \u00ab\u0432 \u0434\u0435\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [in reality]. On myself and my own future. And guess what, \u00ab\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b \u0438 \u0433\u043e\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [ladies and gentlemen]? It works, it really works! Now all of you – from the most frail beginners to almost fluent speakers of Russian language – all of the world’s lovers of \u00ab\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0440\u0435\u0447\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>[Russian speech] that are still just friends with \u00ab\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0433\u0440\u0430\u043c\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian grammar] can use this \u00ab\u0438\u0441\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0444\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [original Russian phase], this \u00ab\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434\u0438\u0446\u0438\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0432\u044b\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [traditional Russian expression] in their every day life \u00ab\u0432\u043d\u0435 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0444\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [outside of the Russian Federation]. I scored 107 out of 120 on the TOEFL test (my university of preference in the USA asks only more than 68 – but let’s not spoil things with talking about what’ll happen only \u00ab\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 \u0435\u0449\u0451<\/span> \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u043a \u0432 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [after yet another (little) year in Russia]…).<\/em> Some of the readers of this blog might argue – and most correctly, too – that it wasn’t really the Russian \u00ab\u0430\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> which helped me in only making 13 points worth of mistakes, but the fact that I’m almost fluent in English. \u00ab\u041c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442 \u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c, \u0432\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043d\u0435<\/span> \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u0442 \u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [maybe, quite (possibly)<\/em> maybe] is what I say to them as I add this: But who can exclude a little help of \u00ab\u0430\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> in a one-time case as this one? What we need to make a firm conclusion is a \u00ab\u0448\u0438\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u0442\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0438\u0439 \u0444\u0443\u043d\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442\u00bb <\/strong>[broad statistical foundation] – anyone out there willing to try \u00ab\u0430\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>in their own lives?<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0410\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044c \u0438 \u043d\u0430 \u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u043c \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0435 \u0432\u0441\u0435\u043c \u0432\u0430\u043c \u043f\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0451<\/span>\u0442!\u00bb <\/strong>– [Perhaps all of you’ll really get lucky!]<\/p>\n

Today I thought we’d continue to talk about luck; or more specifically: \u00ab\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0435 \u0432\u0435\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian luck]. You might be seeing this Russian word for \u2018luck’<\/em> for the very first time – \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [luck; good fortune], whereas you’ve both read, heard and pronounced the word \u00ab\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0430\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [luck; success; fortune; stroke of good luck; good innings] many times before. This is the word most commonly used when wishing each other \u2018good luck’<\/em> in Russian: \u00ab\u0423\u0434\u0430\u0447\u0438!\u00bb<\/strong> [note that when wishing someone something in Russian you always put what you’re wishing them in GENITIVE – thus turning \u00ab\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> into \u00ab\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> – don’t forget!]. But is it worth knowing also \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> as it comes from the verb \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> which is used in the expression \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0451<\/span>\u0442 \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span>-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [someone is lucky; someone has luck]. And since people – even Russians – tend to get lucky from time to time, it is an expression that can come in handy ever so often. The verb \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>is one of those extremely interesting \u00ab\u0433\u043b\u0430\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b \u0434\u0432\u0438\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [verbs of motion], and being as such it is imperfect and only in ONE DIRECTION (for movements in many directions this verb has a close friend: \u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0437\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong>). <\/em>\u00ab\u0412\u0435\u0437\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> can be translated into English – apart from into \u2018to have luck’<\/em> – as \u2018to wheel; carry; tote; trundle’<\/em>. When used to tell of someone having luck the following is important to know: 1)<\/strong> always put this verb in THIRD PERSON SINGULAR, i.e. \u00ab\u043e\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>: thus present tense \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> turns into past tense as \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0437\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong>; 2) <\/strong>the sentence’s SUBJECT should always be in DATIVE, for example: \u00ab\u0442\u0435\u0431\u0435 \u0432\u0435\u0437\u0451\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [you have luck], \u00ab\u043c\u043d\u0435 \u043d\u0435 \u0432\u0435\u0437\u0451\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [I don’t have any luck] and \u00ab\u0438\u043c \u043f\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0437\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[they were lucky; had luck]. Using dative is a very smart and subconscious Russian way of taking away all personal responsibility from the subject of the sentence, which means that to have luck in Russian (or why not say \u2018to have Russian luck’<\/em>?) doesn’t really have anything to do with actions you may or may not have taken. And isn’t that really what luck is all about?<\/p>\n
