Russia doesn’t just have a people with a \u2018wide soul’<\/em> – \u00ab\u0448\u0438\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0434\u0443\u0448\u0430<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>– but also a wide and diverse culture – \u00ab\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u043a\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430 \u0448\u0438\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0438 \u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong>. Today’s post is about a part of Russian culture that is not among the first things you might find out about this country, but a part that is larger than one imagines it to be initially and has a strong influence on many other parts of society as well. This part of Russian culture is called \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u043c\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430\u00bb <\/strong>[\u2018thieves’ music’<\/em>; \u2018music from the criminal world’<\/em>]. The adjective \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> translates into English as \u2018rouge; thieves”<\/em> and is used to define any noun that is connected with the Russian criminal world. Most of Russian traditional \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u043f\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0438\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [\u2018songs from the criminal world’<\/em>] belong to a musical genre known in Russia as \u00ab\u0448\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [chanson], or even \u00ab\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0448\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/a> <\/strong>[Russian chanson<\/a>] since it differs some from the French music genre it originally took its name from. \u00ab\u0428\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> is loved by many, many people in Russia today; the most popular radio station \u00ab\u0432 \u0421\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0434\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [in Sverdlovsk Region] where \u00ab\u0415\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [Yekaterinburg] is located, is none other than \u00ab\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u043e \u0448\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u00bb <\/strong>[Radio Chanson]. Over 50% of all people in our region listen to this radio station on a daily basis. This radio station doesn’t only play \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u043c\u0443<\/span>\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> but sometimes it is difficult to define what is what, especially for someone like me who first came in touch with the Russian \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043c\u0438\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [criminal world] through the works of \u00ab\u0424\u0451<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0440 \u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u0414\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky] and \u00ab\u0412\u0430\u0440\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u043c \u0422\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u043e\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u0428\u0430\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0432\u00bb <\/strong>[Varlam Tikhonovich Shalamov]. Both of these writers collected \u00ab\u0432\u044b\u0440\u0430\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f \u0442\u044e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0436\u0430\u0440\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [prison jargon expressions] while serving their sentences, but dealt with the material they gathered in completely opposite ways. Dostoevsky used them in almost all of his later works while Shalamov principally cleared everything he ever wrote from any word or phrase that sounded like \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0442\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u00bb <\/strong>[\u2018criminal language’<\/em>]. Both of these opinions – Dostoevsky’s positive and Shalamov’s negative – are still current in Russian society today. Either Russians say this kind of culture is okay, or they don’t want to have anything to do with this part of society at all. This I knew before I went to see \u00ab\u041c\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430! \u043c\u044e<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u043a\u043b \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0448\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/a> <\/strong>[Murka! a musical to the tunes of Russian chanson] this evening with my Russian friend \u041c\u0430\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430<\/strong> [Marina] and my Korean roommate \u0412\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0430<\/strong> [Vika]. I received three free tickets on Friday afternoon while I was being treated to \u00ab\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0444\u0435 \u0441 \u043a\u043e\u043d\u044f\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [coffee with brandy] by one of my friends who happens to be both \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c \u0431\u0438\u043e\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [a teacher of biology] and \u00ab\u043c\u043e\u0439 \u0441\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u043d\u0442 \u0448\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[my student of Swedish language] at the university. A young woman was offering university teachers free tickets to see this new Russian musical and my friend said that he would never go since he \u00ab\u043a \u0448\u0430\u043d\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0443 \u043d\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u043a\u00bb <\/strong>[doesn’t like chanson at all] and because he thinks spreading this negative culture is \u00ab\u043f\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0445\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [bad]. Now as you see, my Russian friend agrees with Shalamov and would rather wish this part of Russian society didn’t exist at all; at least he doesn’t want to look in that direction and acknowledge it. But I don’t agree with him and so I asked to give me some tickets instead. Why did I do that? Because I am a huge fan of criminal elements? No, but because I find this culture extremely fascinating. After all I am but a humble philologist and since Russian \u00ab\u0431\u043b\u0430\u0442<\/a>\u0430\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [criminals] have their own \u00ab\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [words] and \u00ab\u0444\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0435\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [phraseology] I cannot help my curiosity. And since I am not an expert on Russian chanson – except for what I’ve heard here and there due to have lived here for long enough – I thought it would be an excellent opportunity to brush up on my knowledge of classical tunes such as \u00ab\u0422\u0430\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [“Taganka”] and \u00ab\u041c\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [“Murka”; (did you know that \u00ab\u041c\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Murka] is short for \u00ab\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Marusya] that’s short for \u00ab\u041c\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Maria])<\/em>]?<\/p>\n

Upon entering a very average looking \u00ab\u0434\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0446 \u043a\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [recreation center] – anyone who has ever visited one of these traditional Soviet buildings knows that the saying \u2018if you’ve seen one, then you’ve seen them all’<\/em> can be applied to them – I didn’t know what to expect. Neither did my friends know what to expect. All we knew was that we were going to hear Russian traditional songs in new versions and that’s what we received in the end. The musical was great! I might be a bit biased, though, since I have to confess to being both \u00ab\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u043e\u0439 \u043b\u044e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c \u043c\u044e<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u043a\u043b\u043e\u0432\u00bb <\/strong>[a big fancier of musicals] and \u00ab\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0448\u043e\u0439 \u0446\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c \u043e<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u044b\u00bb <\/strong>[big appreciator of opera]. This means that a show where people suddenly and\/or continuously sing and\/or dance cannot fail to be liked by me. But this show was somehow different; and perhaps it was the music that made that difference. As always in Russia, the actors and the dancers were all great performers and the singing was impressive. Both my friends were very impressed by the show and the evening was very pleasant. On our way out of the \u00ab\u0434\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0446 \u043a\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u00bb <\/strong>people all around us were singing the tunes from the musical and some were even dancing… That’s what great an impression it made on the audience! Can’t be anything but a good sign, right? And I couldn’t get the best song of all – \u00ab\u0422\u0430\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [“Taganka”] – out of my head during our ride home \u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u0442\u0440\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0431\u0443\u0441\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [on the trolley bus] so the first thing I just had to do when I got home was to find it on youtube… Which I did in a very nice version by \u00ab\u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430\u0438<\/span>\u043b \u0428\u0443\u0444\u0443\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [Mikhail Shufutinsky] that I’m posting below, as well as the lyrics in Russian together with my very own translation in English.
