As I am writing this, much of the \u0412\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u0431\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u044c\u0435 \u0421\u0428\u0410<\/strong> (East Coast of the USA) is getting through \u0443\u0440\u0430\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043d “\u0421\u044d\u043d\u0434\u0438”<\/strong> (hurricane Sandy). It is expected to be one of the worst \u0448\u0442\u043e\u0440\u043c<\/strong> (storm) on record as it plows through \u043a\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u043f\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0433\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (large cities) of the East Coast, including \u0412\u0430\u0448\u0438\u043d\u0433\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043d, \u041d\u044c\u044e-\u0419\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043a \u0438 \u0424\u0438\u043b\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0444\u0438\u044f<\/strong>. It might even turn into \u0441\u0443<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0448\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043c<\/strong> (super storm) as it moves further inland.<\/p>\n

At the moment, it looks like \u044d\u043f\u0438\u0446\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u0440<\/strong> (the epicenter) of the hurricane is not weakening and the hurricane will make the landfall somewhere in \u041d\u044c\u044e<\/span>-\u0414\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0438<\/strong>. If you follow the news, you know that \u0437\u0430\u043a\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u044b \u0430\u044d\u0440\u043e\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (airports are closed) and \u0423\u043e\u043b\u043b \u0421\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0442 \u0438 \u0444\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u043c\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430 \u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u0442 \u0437\u0430\u043a\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (Wall Street and the offices of Federal government will be shut down) for at least a day.<\/p>\n

And if you have \u0440\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u0438 \u0431\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (family and friends) in the affected areas, you are anxiously checking in with them every few hours. Hopefully, they or you, if you live on the East Coast, are ready. \u0412\u044b \u0437\u0430\u043f\u0430\u0441\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u044c \u0432\u043e\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0439, \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0432\u0430\u043c\u0438, \u0444\u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438, \u0431\u0430\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438, \u0441\u0432\u0435\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0438<\/strong> (you stocked up on water, canned food, flashlights, batteries, candles) and \u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0438 \u043c\u043e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0444\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u044b \u0437\u0430\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (your cell phones are charged up). You might even have \u0433\u0435\u043d\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0440<\/strong> (power generator) hooked up. Hopefully, you won\u2019t be needing any of this. But it\u2019s best \u0436\u0434\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u0448\u0435\u0433\u043e, \u043d\u043e \u0431\u044b\u0442\u044c \u0433\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u043c \u043a \u0445\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0448\u0435\u043c\u0443<\/strong> (wait for the best, but be prepared for the worst).<\/p>\n

So far, “\u0421\u044d<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0438”<\/strong> has been described as \u043a\u0440\u0443\u043f\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0448\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (the largest), \u043c\u043e\u0449\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0448\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (the most powerful), and, most troubling of all, \u0441\u043c\u0435\u0440\u0442\u043e\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (deadly) hurricane. So I keep checking my friends and relatives’ Facebook feeds for updates. But updates become fewer and fewer as more people are starting to lose electricity and Internet connection and as those with iPads and smartphones are saving battery juice. Most worrisome, I can\u2019t \u0434\u043e\u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0444\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (get through to their mobile phones). I\u2019ll keep trying and when I do, here\u2019s what I am going to ask:<\/p>\n

\u041a\u0430\u043a \u0432\u044b \u0442\u0430\u043c?<\/strong> – How are you? The casual \u041a\u0430\u043a \u0432\u044b \u043f\u043e\u0436\u0438\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u0435?<\/strong> (How are you doing?) and \u041a\u0430\u043a \u0443 \u0432\u0430\u0441 \u0434\u0435\u043b\u0430? (How are you?) sound entirely out of place and too wordy in emergencies.
\n\u042d\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u0435\u0449\u0451<\/span> \u0435\u0441\u0442\u044c?<\/strong> – Do you still have electricity?
\n\u0412\u0430\u0441 \u043d\u0435 \u0437\u0430\u0442\u043e\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u043e?<\/strong> – Is your place flooded?
\n\u0412\u0441\u0435 \u0432 \u043f\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0435?<\/strong> – Is everyone ok?
\n\u0412\u0441\u0451 \u0432 \u043f\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0435?<\/strong> – Is everything ok? Of course, I know they have no electricity, their basements are flooded and there are tree limbs scattered around their yards. But this question means whether anything unexpected and scary happened.<\/p>\n

I will keep it very short, \u0447\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u044b \u043d\u0435 \u0440\u0430\u0437\u0440\u044f\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0438\u0445 \u043c\u043e\u0431\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (so as not to drain their mobile phone\u2019s batteries). And at the end of the conversation, feeling very powerless, I will tell them \u043d\u0443, \u0434\u0435\u0440\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u0441\u044c<\/strong> (hang in there) and promise that \u044f \u043f\u043e\u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d\u044e<\/span> \u0447\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 \u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0443 \u0447\u0430\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0432<\/strong> (I will call again in a couple of hours).<\/p>\n

In the mean time, all I can do is \u0432\u043e\u043b\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> (to worry) and \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0436\u0438\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to be concerned) and \u043d\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> (to hope) that the storm passes soon without wrecking any more damage.<\/p>\n
