In that case, allow me to recommend the lovable <b>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u044f \u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0430<\/b> (lit., &#8220;gray rat&#8221;), commonly known in English as the &#8220;Norway rat&#8221; (<i>Rattus norvegicus<\/i>). Over the years, I have had several pet rats &#8212; they&#8217;re extremely <b>\u043b\u044e\u0431\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/b> (&#8220;curious&#8221;), <b>\u0437\u043d\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e \u0443\u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0435 \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u0439 \u0438 \u0445\u043e\u043c\u044f\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432<\/b> (&#8220;significantly more intelligent than mice or hamsters&#8221;), and also <b>\u043b\u0430\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0435<\/b> (&#8220;affectionate&#8221;) <b>\u0438 \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> \u043e\u0431\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0441 \u043b\u044e\u0434\u044c\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span><\/b> (&#8220;socialize well with humans&#8221;). Currently I&#8217;m the <b>\u0445\u043e\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u0438\u043d<\/b> (here: &#8220;pet-owner&#8221;) of a tuxedo-patterned <b><span style=\"background-color: yellow; border-bottom: 1px dotted lime; border-right: 1px dotted lime;\" title=\"''female animal''; cf. \u00ab\u0441\u0430\u043c\u0435\u0446\u00bb, ''male animal'' -- but colloquially it's fine to use \u00ab\u0434\u0435\u0432\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb or \u00ab\u043c\u0430\u043b\u044c\u0447\u0438\u043a\u00bb in reference to pets!\">\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u043a\u0430<\/span><\/b> named <b><span style=\"background-color: yellow; border-bottom: 1px dotted lime; border-right: 1px dotted lime;\" title=\"lit., ''tiny crumb'', from \u00ab\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043a\u0430\u00bb, ''speck of food'' -- in honor of the fairytale character \u00ab\u041a\u0440\u043e\u0448\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0430-\u0425\u0430\u0432\u0440\u043e\u0448\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0430\u00bb, ''wee little Havroshechka''\">\u041a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/span><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Rats may strike many people as an unlikely choice for a <b><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/russian-names-for-pets\/\">\u043f\u0438\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u0446<\/a><\/b> (a word that can mean &#8220;pet animal,&#8221; though it&#8217;s also a synonym for <b>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/b>, &#8220;alumnus&#8221;!). After all, for thousands of years, <b>\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044b \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0447\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u044e\u0442 \u043e\u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0432\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434 \u0447\u0435\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0443<\/b> (&#8220;rats have caused enormous harm to humanity&#8221;). They steal our food, damage materials with their teeth, and are <b>\u043d\u043e\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438 \u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438\u0445 \u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u043b\u044e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043c \u0431\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0435\u0439<\/b> (&#8220;carriers of many diseases that are dangerous to humans&#8221;), including <b>\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u043c\u0430<\/b> (&#8220;the Black Plague&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Even so, <b>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u044f \u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0430 \u0441\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e \u043b\u0435\u0433\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span> <span style=\"background-color: yellow; border-bottom: 1px dotted lime; border-right: 1px dotted lime;\" title=\"''to hand-tame a wild animal'' -- from \u00ab\u0440\u0443\u043a\u0430\u00bb, ''hand''; and the adjective \u00ab\u0440\u0443\u0447\u043d\u043e\u0439\u00bb can in this context mean ''tame''\">\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0440\u0443\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442\u0441\u044f<\/span><\/b> (&#8220;the wild <i>R. norvegicus<\/i> is tamed with comparative ease&#8221;), and since the 19th century, completely <b>\u043e\u0434\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u043d\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/b> (&#8220;domesticated&#8221;) varieties of this species have been bred &#8212; putting them in the &#8220;Top Ten&#8221; of the world&#8217;s most important laboratory organisms. Plus, they&#8217;re much more affectionate pets than <i>D. melanogaster<\/i> (aka <b>\u043f\u043b\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0435 \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/b>) or <i>E. coli<\/i>!<\/p>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s take a quick look at the <b>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e <span style=\"background-color: yellow; border-bottom: 1px dotted lime; border-right: 1px dotted lime;\" title=\"in biology, \u00ab\u0432\u0438\u0434\u00bb = ''species'' and \u00ab\u0440\u043e\u0434\u00bb = ''genus''\">\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430<\/span><\/b> (&#8220;the natural history of this species&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Despite its name in both English and scientific Latin, the <b>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u044f \u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0430<\/b> is not from Norway, or even from Europe; you can blame an 18th-century British scientist for that error! In fact, the Norway rat originated in eastern China and is not very closely related to the indigenous European <b>\u0447\u0451\u0440\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0430<\/b> (&#8220;common black rat,&#8221; <i>Rattus rattus<\/i>). Because of natural climate barriers, the <b>\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u044f \u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0430<\/b> was never able to migrate by land from China to Europe, and only began reaching the West in the early 16th century or so, traveling <b>\u043d\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0440\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0445 <span style=\"background-color: yellow; border-bottom: 1px dotted lime; border-right: 1px dotted lime;\" title=\"singular: \u00ab\u0441\u0443\u0434\u043d\u043e\u00bb -- don't confuse with \u00ab\u0441\u0443\u0434\u00bb, which is both ''a court of law'' and ''a courtoom trial''\">\u0441\u0443\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/span><\/b> (&#8220;on sea-going vessels&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the 19th century, professional rat-killers in England would from time to time find <b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043e\u0431\u0438<\/b> (&#8220;individual specimens&#8221;) that had exceptionally <b>\u0441\u043f\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0445\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u0435\u0440\u044b<\/b> (&#8220;calm temperaments&#8221;), and realized that scientists were willing to pay money for easy-to-handle rats that could be bred as research animals. We can only speculate that at some point, the wife of an unknown scientist took one look at her husband&#8217;s laboratory rats <b>\u0438 \u0432\u043b\u044e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c \u0432 \u0433\u043b\u0430\u0437\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>-\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u043d\u043a\u0438<\/b> (&#8220;and fell in love with their beady little eyes&#8221;). What&#8217;s known for sure is that 19th-century British ladies were among the first to popularize <b>\u0440\u0443\u0447\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044b<\/b> (&#8220;tamed rats&#8221;) as fashionable pets &#8212; yes, despite the stereotype that Victorian women tended to <b>\u043f\u0430\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0432 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043c\u043e\u0440\u043e\u043a \u043f\u0440\u0438 \u043f\u043e\u044f\u0432\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438 <span style=\"background-color: yellow; border-bottom: 1px dotted lime; border-right: 1px dotted lime;\" title=\"from \u00ab\u0433\u0440\u044b\u0437\u0442\u044c\u00bb (\u00ab\u044f \u0433\u0440\u044b\u0437\u0443, \u0442\u044b \u0433\u0440\u044b\u0437\u0451\u0448\u044c...\u00bb), meaning ''to gnaw, to nibble''. Most likely onomatopoeic, from the \u00ab\u0433\u0440\u0437-\u0433\u0440\u0437\u00bb noise of teeth scraping on wood or bones\">\u0433\u0440\u044b\u0437\u0443\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432<\/span><\/b> (&#8220;fall into a swoon at the appearance of rodents&#8221;)!<\/p>\n<h3><b>\u041d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432 \u043e \u0441\u043e\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438 \u043f\u0438\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0446\u0435\u0432<\/b><br \/>\n(&#8220;A few words about the keeping of pets&#8221;)<\/h3>\n<p>Whether you choose a rat, a dog, or a parrot, there are a number of key vocabulary terms that are generally applicable to pets. And your pet needs fresh water, too: here, the verb is <b>(\u043d\u0430)\u043f\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c (+ acc.)<\/b>, &#8220;give (a person or animal) something to drink&#8221;.
