Do you know how to count to a million in Russian? Recently, we posted about counting \u0434\u043e \u0434\u0432\u0430\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/strong> (to twenty)<\/a>\u00a0in Russian. And a while ago we talked about counting to 100<\/a>. But \u0441\u0443\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u044f \u0434\u0435\u0439\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (the harsh reality) dictates that we learn numbers well beyond the first \u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044f<\/strong> (hundred). Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n

Budgeting for a Trip to Russia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Travelling to Russian is expensive. One of the cheapest hostel-type rooms in Moscow goes for \u0432\u043e\u0441\u0435\u043c\u044c\u0441\u043e<\/span>\u0442 \u043f\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044f<\/span>\u0442 \u0440\u0443\u0431\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u0432 \u0441\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (eight hundred and fifty rubles per night). Understanding Russian News<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even if you do not plan on travelling to Russia any time soon, learning big numbers will be useful when reading Russian newspapers, watching Russian TV, or listening to Russian radio:<\/p>\n

Thousands beyond the first ten are very simple – same as the numbers 11 through 99, only add the word \u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0430<\/strong> (thousand) if thousands end in 1, \u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0438<\/strong> (thousands) for thousands ending in 2, 3, or 4, \u00a0and\u00a0\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447<\/strong>\u00a0(thousands) if thousands are 11 through 19 or end in 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.<\/p>\n

Of course, if you are discussing \u0437\u0432\u0451<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u044b \u0432 \u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0431\u0435<\/strong> (stars in the sky) or \u043f\u0435\u0441\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0438 \u043d\u0430 \u043f\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0436\u0435<\/strong> (grains of sand on the beach) or \u0412\u0412\u041f<\/strong> (here: \u0432\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u0432\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u043a\u0442<\/strong> – gross domestic product, GDP), you will need much bigger numbers. Fortunately, from here on up, the really big numbers sound the same in Russian as they do in English. The only exception is \u043c\u0438\u043b\u043b\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0434<\/strong> (billion).<\/p>\n

Totally Useless but Fun Stupendously Big Number<\/strong><\/p>\n
