Above you can clearly see how it’s done here in the wild East: you must both wait and get on the tram in middle of busy \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0441\u043f\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0442 \u041b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Lenin’s prospect] as cars rush by…<\/em><\/p>\n

Some people do not own a car. Other people do not even have any \u00ab\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[driver’s license]. These people have to \u00ab\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u043c \u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u043e\u043c<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [use public transportation<\/a>]. I am one of these privileged people since \u00ab\u0443 \u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span> \u043d\u0435\u0442 \u043d\u0438 \u043c\u0430\u0448\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u044b, \u043d\u0438 \u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0445 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> [I have neither a car nor a driver’s license]. But what about this makes me feel privileged? Because I have the constant opportunity to choose from the abundance of different means of public transportation here in Russia! Even though I’m really a devoted \u00ab\u043f\u0435\u0448\u0435\u0445\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u00bb <\/strong>[pedestrian] and love \u00ab\u0445\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0435\u0448\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [to walk on foot], there are times in life when one must \u00ab\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0447\u0451<\/span>\u043c-\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [travel on something] in order to get where one is going. Remember the last post, in which I tried to sort out when to use the prepositions \u00ab\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> and \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> in Russian<\/a>? Remember how I promised to sort out these \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> in combination with means of transportation in a separate post? Well, this is it! This is the post in which I’ll try to sort things out in this regard. First we must understand that there are many kinds of public transportation in Russia, and that it functions in a different manner then in, for example, Europe. I’ve lived in Russia for more than five years and I’ve seen a \u00ab\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [timetable; schedule] almost \u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u043e\u0439 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043a\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [on every bus stop] but I’ve never seen buses keeping these times nor Russians expecting them to do so. Public transportation comes and goes as it pleases in this country. For some this might sound crazy (it did to me also in the beginning) but as a matter of fact it is not the least crazy. Russian public transportation WORKS! You never have to wait for \u00ab\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [the bus] in Russia. If there’s no bus, then there’s always \u00ab\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043c\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [a tram] or \u00ab\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0431\u0443\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [a trolleybus]. But if both of there fail to show up one can always jump on \u00ab\u043c\u0430\u0440\u0448\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [a \u2018marshrutka’<\/a><\/em>] of which there comes about one every minute in average big Russian cities. And then there’s also to possibility of riding \u00ab\u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440\u043e<\/span><\/a>\u00bb <\/strong>[the subway] in many bigger cities. Therefore one needs not have wheels of one’s own in this country. Not only because you’ll keep getting stuck \u00ab\u0432 \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0430\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [in traffic jams] anyway, but because there’s plenty of other – cheaper and more environmentally friendly! – ways of getting around.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0410\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441<\/a>\u044b\u00bb<\/em><\/strong> [pl. buses] exist in many different sizes, color and shapes in Russia. Here we have \u00ab\u0436\u0451<\/span>\u043b\u0442\u044b\u0439 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0431\u0443\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [a yellow bus] and \u00ab\u0437\u0435\u043b\u0451<\/span>\u043d\u043e-\u0431\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0439 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [a green-white bus]. Very often in Russian cities you can see \u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u044b\u0435 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u044b \u0438\u0437 \u0415\u0432\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u043f\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [old buses from Europe]. For example, \u00ab\u0432 \u041f\u0435\u0440\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [in Perm] there are many buses \u00ab\u0438\u0437 \u0414\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438 \u0438 \u0413\u0435\u0440\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438\u00bb <\/strong>[from Denmark and Germany] and for me while riding them it was very entertaining because I felt like I was back in the past century’s Europe…<\/em><\/p>\n

The preposition used with means of transportation in Russian is \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018on’<\/em>, \u2018in’<\/em>, \u2018at’<\/em>]. You can also use \u00ab\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0430\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u00bb<\/strong> [instrumental case] with the very same means of transportation and the meaning remains pretty much the same. There’s of course nothing wrong with asking someone on the street on Moscow either of the following questions: \u00ab\u041c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u0434\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0434\u043e \u043c\u0443\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u044f \u0411\u0443\u043b\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/a> \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u043e\u043c?\u00bb \u00a0<\/strong>[Can you to get to the Bulgakov Museum<\/a> by bus?] or \u00ab\u0410 \u0434\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0434\u043e \u0411\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e \u0442\u0435\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/a> \u0432\u043e\u0437\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u0442\u0440\u0430\u043c\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u043c?\u00bb<\/strong> [And is it possible to get to Bolshoi Theatre<\/a> by tram?]. But let’s keep it simple today and focus with means of transportation in combination with the preposition \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong>. In all of the examples below I’m going to use the verb of motion \u00ab\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> in all ways it can be changed in present tense:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u042f \u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0443 \u043d\u0430 \u0442\u0440\u0430\u043c\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> – [I’m going by tram].<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0422\u044b \u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0448\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> – [You’re going by subway (metro].<\/p>\n

Behold my beloved: \u00ab\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0431\u0443\u0441\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [trolley bus<\/a>; large vehicle which operates on electricity]. Since I come from a country where \u00ab\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0431\u0443\u0441\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [pl. trolley buses] are a thing of the past – sadly – I was astonished the first time I saw one of these \u00ab\u0432 \u0421\u0430\u043d\u043a\u0442-\u041f\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[in Saint Petersburg] \u00ab\u0432 \u0433\u043b\u0443\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u043c\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u044e<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438 \u0432 2004 (\u0434\u0432\u0435 \u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0447\u0438 \u0447\u0435\u0442\u0432\u0451<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u043e\u043c) \u0433\u043e\u0434\u0443<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [in my \u2018deep’ youth in the year 2004]. While living in Siberia I further developed my love affair with this kind of Russian public transport and if there’s ever an opportunity to ride on of these babies I take it! Though there’s no real logic behind my love for the \u00ab\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0431\u0443\u0441\u00bb<\/strong>… Behind it you should be able to spot the smaller and very orange \u00ab\u043c\u0430\u0440\u0448\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [which is short for \u00ab\u043c\u0430\u0440\u0448\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0442\u0430\u043a\u0441\u0438<\/span><\/a>\u00bb<\/strong>].<\/em><\/p>\n

But when we’re using the preposition \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> together with means of transportation in Russian, we’re actually not speaking of location<\/em> as such, but of a way of moving<\/em> ahead; getting where you want to be, so to speak. If you want to express location within a mean of transportation in Russian, then the preposition you should use is \u00ab\u0432\u00bb<\/strong> which in this case translates very simply into \u2018in’ <\/em>or \u2018on’<\/em>. Does that sound tricky to you? Let’s have a look at two helpful sentences using the word \u00ab\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0435\u0437\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [train] which I’m sure will clear up things a little bit at least:<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0412\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0430 \u043b\u044e<\/span>\u0431\u0438\u0442 \u043f\u0443\u0442\u0435\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u041d\u0410 \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0435\u0437\u0434\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> – [Vika loves to travel by train].<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0412\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u0430 \u043f\u043e\u0437\u043d\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c \u0441\u043e \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0438<\/span>\u043c \u043c\u0443<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u043c \u0412 \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0435\u0437\u0434\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> – [Vika met her husband on\/in a train].<\/p>\n

Of course I had to save the best – and worst! – to last. What is this, you wonder? Let me explain! This little square thingy is called by \u00ab\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043d\u0430\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [the Russian people] for \u00ab\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018pazik’] which is made from the abbreviation \u00ab\u041f\u0410\u0417\u00bb<\/strong> standing for \u00ab\u041f\u0430\u0432\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0437\u0430\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/a>\u00bb <\/strong>[Pavlovo Bus Factory<\/a>]. In some Russian cities \u2018pazikis’ perform the role of local \u2018marshrutkas’. That’s okay. But very often here in the Urals they also traffic roads between smaller towns and villages and since they are the most uncomfortable mean of transportation ever invented by mankind riding them for more than an hour equals shaking until your insides feels like milkshake. \u00ab\u041d\u0435 \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span>!\u00bb<\/strong> [Not good!]<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
