And then it’s that time of the year again – \u00ab\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u043d\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [fall], which equals \u00ab\u0441\u0435\u0437\u043e<\/span>\u043d \u0433\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u043f\u043f\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [flu season] in all countries located in the more northern part of this our splendid globe. The object of our common affection – \u00ab\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Russia], officially known as \u00ab\u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0444\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian Federation], or why not call it old-school by \u00ab\u0420\u0443\u0441\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [Rus’], or perhaps keeping it not-so-short and but-oh-so-sweet with the words \u00ab\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0440\u0438\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u044f \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u0432\u0448\u0435\u0433\u043e \u0421\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0441\u043e\u044e<\/span>\u0437\u0430\u00bb <\/strong>[the territory of the former Soviet Union] – is just such a country. A country located \u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u0441\u0435\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[in the north]. This year, \u00ab\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0439 \u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0435\u043d\u044c\u044e\u00bb<\/strong> [this fall] we \u00ab\u0441\u0435\u0432\u0435\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [northerners; plural form of:<\/em> \u00ab\u0441\u0435\u0432\u0435\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong>] have a new flu to be worried about, the so-called \u00ab\u0441\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u0433\u0440\u0438\u043f\u043f\u00bb<\/strong> [swine flu]. In an effort to illustrate how this new threat to public health is dealt with \u00ab\u0432 \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [in the Russian province] I will post \u00ab\u0434\u0432\u0430 \u043e\u0431\u044a\u044f\u0432\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [two notifications] on the blog today that I’ve photographed in the Russian reality around me.<\/p>\n

Here we find the interesting verb \u00ab\u0434\u0438\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [impf.<\/em>: dictate] Perhaps you can see that it shares a common root with the noun \u00ab\u0434\u0438\u043a\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [dictator]? And how to use this verb, you might wonder? Well, have a look at this:<\/p>\n

You should combine the verb \u00ab\u0434\u0438\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> with an indirect subject in dative: \u00ab\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443?\u00bb<\/strong> [lit. to whom?] and the direct object in accusative: \u00ab\u0447\u0442\u043e?\u00bb<\/strong> [what?]. Here’s an example of what a sentence might end up looking like:<\/p>\n

The note above I found hanging on the wall next to the elevator on the first floor in the dormitory where I live yesterday. I didn’t know that all people at our university have to \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0438\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [refl. impfv.<\/em>: (of a vaccine) <\/em>to take] against the new \u00ab\u0441\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u0433\u0440\u0438\u043f\u043f\u00bb<\/strong> [swine flu]. I hope they won’t include foreigners though! I’m very afraid of needles. I think I just might have to sit down and write one of those \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0437 \u043d\u0430 \u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044f \u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0440\u0430 \u0432 \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u0444\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [a refusal to the principle in free form] and try to explain my enormous fear of everything having to do with hospitals in general… You could also make of note of the rare use of the pronoun \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e<\/span><\/strong>\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> which is old and used very rarely in modern Russian. It means \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u043e\u0442<\/strong>\u00bb <\/strong>[that] and \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u043e\u0442<\/strong>\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0439<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong> [the same] and is made from pronoun \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u043d<\/strong>\u00bb <\/strong>[he; it].<\/p>\n

New words today – and excellent words to use this season – are as follows:<\/p>\n
