It\u2019s that time of the year for many of us to give and receive gifts. Whichever you like most, let\u2019s learn the Russian gift-giving vocabulary just in time for the holidays.<\/p>\n

Since it\u2019s so much fun to get gifts, let\u2019s start with the verbs \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (imperfective: to get, to receive) and \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (perfective: to get, to receive).<\/p>\n

Whatever her answer is, it will likely start with \u042f \u0445\u043e\u0447\u0443<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (I want to get) or \u042f \u043c\u0435\u0447\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u044e \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (lit: I am dreaming to get).<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t feel like using the verb \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u0447\u0438\u0442\u044c, you can totally skip it:<\/p>\n

Finally, you might find the word \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u043a<\/strong> (gift) itself interesting. Its root is the noun \u0434\u0430\u0440<\/strong> (gift). But when we speak of \u0434\u0430\u0440\u044b<\/span><\/strong> (gifts), we usually imply something on a grander scale or something more solemn or something free:<\/p>\n

\u041a\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430 \u0431\u044b\u043b\u0430<\/span> \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0430\u043d\u0430<\/span> \u0432 \u0434\u0430\u0440 \u043c\u0443\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u044e<\/strong> – A painting was given to the museum as a gift.
