Since we recently had a post here on how to ride \u00ab\u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [public transportation] in Russia<\/a> – or perhaps it was really more about \u00ab\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u044b \u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0430 \u0432 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0444\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb <\/strong>[types of public transportation in the Russian Federation] – let’s take a closer look at \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0435\u0437\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [ticket (on buses, trams, trolleybuses, etc.)<\/em>] in Russia today. Or more exactly: the interesting phenomena of the \u00ab\u0441\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [the \u2018lucky’<\/em> ticket] in Russia. Maybe not all of my dear readers know what it is that makes a Russian \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0435\u0437\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [a ticket] \u00ab\u0441\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [lucky]? I thought so! Aren’t you curious now? Well, let me explain.<\/p>\n

In Russia there are two ways you can pay for public transportation. Either you can buy \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0435\u0437\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [ticket] that entitles you to ride as much as you like on anything you want to – \u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u0442\u0440\u0430\u043c\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u044f\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [on trams], \u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u0430\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [on buses], \u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u0442\u0440\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0431\u0443\u0441\u0430\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [on trolleybuses] – for a specific amount of time. Usually the amount of time is a month (when you have to buy a new ticket depends on what Russian city you’re living in, sometimes in the middle of the month, sometimes closer at the end of it for the next month)<\/em>; one can buy a ticket for two weeks at a time also. When buying these kinds of tickets there are all sorts of \u00ab\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [discount, price reduction; rebate] one can receive if one belongs to a certain group in society. For example, there are \u00ab\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0430 \u0434\u043b\u044f \u043f\u0435\u043d\u0441\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u00bb <\/strong>[discount for pensioners], \u00ab\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0430 \u0434\u043b\u044f \u0448\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0432\u00bb <\/strong>[discount for school children], and – my personal favorite – \u00ab\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0430 \u0434\u043b\u044f \u0441\u0442\u0443\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432\u00bb <\/strong>[discount for students]. This is of course the most \u00ab\u044d\u043a\u043e\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0441\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043e\u0431\u00bb<\/strong> [economic; economical; thrifty way] of riding public transportation in Russia. But if you don’t use public transportation on a regular basis you might want to just buy a one-time \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0435\u0437\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [ticket] already when you’re on the bus or the trolleybus. In Russia every bus, tram and trolleybus is still served by a person (usually a woman)<\/em> selling these – \u00ab\u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b \u043d\u0430 \u043e\u0434\u043d\u0443<\/span> \u043f\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043a\u0443\u00bb<\/strong> [tickets for one ride]. And that’s where the \u00ab\u0441\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb <\/strong>[the lucky ticket] enters into the picture.<\/p>\n

On every ticket in Russia there are always six numbers. \u00ab\u0421\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [a lucky ticket] is a ticket where the total of the first three numbers equals the total of the last three numbers. If this is not clear enough, let’s take a look at a \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u0433\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [demonstrative; illustrative; visual example]:<\/p>\n

\u00a0This is \u00ab\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [an unlucky, unfortunate; unhappy, sad ticket] from \u00ab\u041f\u0435\u0440\u043c\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [Perm]. Why? Because 9 + 7 + 3 equals 19, while 0 + 3 + 5 equals 8. And 19 and 8 are not equal numbers, not even close!<\/em><\/p>\n

This, however, is \u00ab\u0441\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [a lucky ticket] from \u00ab\u0415\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [Yekaterinburg]. How come? Because 3 + 3 + 3 equals 9, and 6 + 2 + 1 also equals 9. Yay! <\/em><\/p>\n

Russians always make sure to count and add up the numbers on their bus tickets, and if they receive a lucky one, then they’re always eager to inform you of this. One can actually call it a bit of a national game, if not even a kind of national sport! Don’t be surprised if you’re riding the bus with some Russian friends and they ask you: \u00ab\u0423 \u0442\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span> \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442 \u0441\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439?\u00bb <\/strong>[“Is your ticket lucky?”]. If you’re not sure how to add up your numbers I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to explain. I do it myself, too. And whenever I receive a \u2018lucky’<\/em> one I feel like the day is going to be extra good, but when I don’t I just hardly pay any attention at all. Then it’s just a bus ticket and has no influence on my life at all… And I have a hunch that the way I look at this is also the way of most Russians!<\/p>\n

Of course the adjective \u00ab\u0441\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [glad, happy, pleased; fortunate; lucky] is made from the noun \u00ab\u0441\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [happiness, joy, gladness, cheerfulness; fortune, luck]. Other Russian nouns that would be more proper to use in the sense of \u2018luck’<\/em> would be \u00ab\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [luck; success; fortune; stroke of good luck, good innings] or \u00ab\u0432\u0435\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [luck, good fortune]. But for some reason the adjective used together with bus ticket is not \u00ab\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [successful, fortunate, prosperous, lucky]. I guess that Russians like the concept of \u00ab\u0441\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> more!<\/p>\n
