I\u2019m saying it because tomorrow is December 21st, 2012, <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/strong> (fatal date) some people and Hollywood studios believe to be <strong>\u043a\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0446 \u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/strong> (the end of the world).<\/p>\n<p>Whether you believe in this <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (prediction) or think it&#8217;s just <strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0430\u0437\u043d\u0438<\/strong> (tall tale), it is a great opportunity to learn some interesting Russian words and phrases.<\/p>\n<p>Take the adjective <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (fateful, fatal), for example. It comes from the word <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a<\/strong> (fate, usually evil fate) and is not related to <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a<\/strong> (rock) as in the music genre.\u00a0It is not an accident that someone who <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0440\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (foretell) our <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a<\/strong> (fate) is called <strong>\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a<\/strong> (prophet).<\/p>\n<p>We might talk about <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/strong> (fatal date), but also <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0447\u0430\u0441<\/strong> (fatal hour) and <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/strong> (fatal day). <strong>\u0420\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u043c\u0438<\/strong> (pl: fatal, fateful) can be women &#8211; <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0449\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/strong> (femme fatale); men &#8211; <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043c\u0443\u0436\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430<\/strong> (think Don Juan or James Bond); mistakes &#8211; <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (fatal mistake) and even eggs &#8211; <strong>\u0420\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0435 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0439\u0446\u0430<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Fatal_Eggs\">The Fatal Eggs<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I recently came across an article that discussed the results of <strong>\u0441\u043e\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043e\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044b \u0440\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (opinion polls among Russians) about the whole 12\/21\/12 deal. Turns out, most people do not do any special preparations for the possible <strong>\u0430\u043f\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u043f\u0441\u0438\u0441<\/strong> (Apocalypse). Which simply re-affirms the relevance of the two old sayings on the subject of emergency preparedness<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u043f\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u0433\u0440\u043e\u043c \u043d\u0435 \u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0442, \u043c\u0443\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a \u043d\u0435 \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0442\u0441\u044f<\/strong> (lit: a peasant does not cross himself until after the thunder)<br \/>\n<strong>\u043f\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0445 \u0432 \u0437\u0430\u0434 \u043d\u0435 \u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044e<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0442<\/strong> (lit: until a roasted rooster pecks one in the rear end) &#8211; this one is used as part of a phrase, i.e. <strong>\u043a\u0430\u043a \u043e\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e, \u0432\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438 \u043d\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0443\u0442\u00a0\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0435\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>, \u043f\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0435\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0445 \u0432 \u0437\u0430\u0434 \u043d\u0435 \u043a\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044e<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u0442<\/strong> (as usual, authorities are not doing anything about the problem until it becomes too late)<\/p>\n<p>Both mean \u201cnothing gets done until bad stuff happens\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With so much media attention to tomorrow, it seems noone should be <strong>\u0437\u0430\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0432\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> (caught unawares). The adverb <strong>\u0432\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> is another curious word. It\u2019s tempting to think of it as related to <strong>\u043f\u043b\u043e\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (bad). However, it is more likely related to <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0445<\/strong> (alarm). You are not likely to ever hear the word <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0445<\/strong> since it fell out of use. But <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> (turmoil, fright) and <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (to alarm) are both alive and well as seen in these headlines<\/p>\n<p><strong>NASA \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0437\u0432\u0430\u043b\u043e \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0445 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043c \u043e \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span> \u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/strong> &#8211; NASA caused <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.obozrevatel.com\/science\/93461-nasa-vyizvalo-perepoloh-rolikom-o-kontse-sveta.-video.htm\">turmoil<\/a> with its end of the world video.<br \/>\n<strong>\u041e\u0431\u0435\u0437\u044c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0430 \u0432 \u043f\u0430\u043b\u044c\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span> \u0443\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u043b\u0430 \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0445 \u0432 IKEA<\/strong> &#8211; Monkey in a coat <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dni.ru\/society\/2012\/12\/11\/245053.html\">caused alarm<\/a> at an IKEA store. Although from the article it seems that it was the monkey, not the IKEA shoppers, who <strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c<\/strong> (was frightened).<\/p>\n<p>Most <strong>\u0437\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0449\u0438\u0435 \u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044e<\/span>\u0434\u0438<\/strong> (people in the know) in Russia believe that <strong>\u0441\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0445\u0438 \u043e \u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u043c \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span> \u0441\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0430 \u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0443\u0432\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (rumors of the upcoming Apocalypse are exaggerated). Numerous <strong>\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/strong> (astrologers), <strong>\u044d\u0437\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (those studying the occult), <strong>\u0441\u0432\u044f\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0443\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438<\/strong> (clergymen), <strong>\u043f\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (politicians), <strong>\u043c\u0435\u0442\u0435\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/strong> (meteorologists) and others with the powers of influencing our decisions, advise Russians to stay calm, stock up on candles, and spend Friday at home with families (astrologers\u2019 advice) or at work (politicians\u2019 advice).<\/p>\n<p>But the most important advice to keep in mind on Friday comes from the Russian classical literature (no surprise here).
