That might have seemed like a great plan when it was still <strong>\u00ab\u043f\u043e\u043d\u0435\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a\u00bb <\/strong>[Monday] and my first fever-free day since coming down with <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0432\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0433\u0440\u0438\u043f\u043f\u00bb<\/strong> [swine flu] only a few days before. On <strong>\u00ab\u0447\u0435\u0442\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u00bb<\/strong> [Thursday] this plan turned out not to be so great anymore. On Thursday I woke up to my fourth fever-free day, but still with <strong>\u00ab\u0442\u044f\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0439 \u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [a heavy cough <em>(this noun ends on a soft sign, and thus make a note of that it is masculine!)<\/em>] and also <strong>\u00ab\u043c\u043d\u0435 \u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e \u0434\u044b\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>[it was hard for me to breathe]. Since the fever left my health had not improved at all and thus I decided that <strong>\u00ab\u0445\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u0442 \u0431\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0443\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [enough with being sick already] and called up my friend, whose mother is <strong>\u00ab\u0432\u0440\u0430\u0447\u00bb<\/strong> [a doctor]. Her mother said that I might have <strong>\u00ab<a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%9F%D0%BD%D0%B5%D0%B2%D0%BC%D0%BE%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%8F\" target=\"_blank\">\u043f\u043d\u0435\u0432\u043c\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u044f<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pneumonia\" target=\"_blank\">pneumonia<\/a>] as <strong>\u00ab\u043e\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0436\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [complication; sequela, condition resulting from an earlier illness or disease <em>(medicine)<\/em>] after the swine flu. I was in no condition to go outside and that&#8217;s why my friend came over to my place, picked up her phone and <strong>\u00ab\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0437\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0430 \u0432\u0440\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u0434\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [called a doctor to come to <em>(my)<\/em> home]. At this point it should be noted that I have suffered from enormous <strong>\u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0445 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0434 \u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0430\u043c\u0438\u00bb <\/strong>[a fear of hospitals] my whole life, that <strong>\u00ab\u044f \u0443\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u043e \u0431\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044e<\/span>\u0441\u044c \u0432\u0440\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [I&#8217;m terribly afraid of doctors] and that all of this adds up to some sort of <strong>\u00ab\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0438\u044f\u00bb <\/strong>[phobia, strong and persistent irrational fear] that I can&#8217;t get rid of. On Thursday I tried to explain this to the two Russian doctors that turned up in my home, but &#8211; like always &#8211; they did not understand me at all. Well, perhaps I wouldn&#8217;t understand people who told me that <strong>\u00ab\u0443 \u043d\u0438\u0445 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0445 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0434 <a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A4%D0%B8%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B3%D0%B8%D1%8F\" target=\"_blank\">\u0444\u0438\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0433\u0430\u043c\u0438<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [they have a fear of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philology\" target=\"_blank\">philologists<\/a>] and that&#8217;s why they <strong>\u00ab\u0431\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0447\u043b\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0440\u0435\u0434\u043b\u043e\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043d\u0430 <a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A7%D0%B0%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B8_%D1%80%D0%B5%D1%87%D0%B8\" target=\"_blank\">\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0438<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [are afraid of dividing a sentence into <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lexical_category\" target=\"_blank\">parts of speech<\/a>]&#8230; Or, which is even more likely, I would&#8217;ve thought this fear just as illogical as the doctors find my fear of hospitals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-448\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2009\/11\/workingphone.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2009\/11\/workingphone.jpg 441w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2009\/11\/workingphone-350x240.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<em>This ancient phone actually works! Despite looking like it was simply forgotten here in the last century&#8230; Don&#8217;t you think that it is strange that <strong>\u00ab\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u0438\u0439 \u0447\u0430\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [quiet hour] lasts for not one hour, but two? Why isn&#8217;t it called <strong>\u00ab\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0445\u0438\u0435 \u0447\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[quiet hours] instead? Maybe because the plural <strong>\u00ab\u0447\u0430\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>in Russian also means \u2018clock&#8217; and that would make it \u2018quiet clock&#8217;?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Life, it turned out last Thursday, is apparently still filled with plenty of things I haven&#8217;t done yet. But one of them I got done with right then and there: <strong>\u00ab\u044f \u043f\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u043b\u0430 \u0432 \u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0443 \u043d\u0430 <a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%90%D0%B2%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D0%B1%D0%B8%D0%BB%D1%8C_%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B9_%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BE%D1%89%D0%B8\" target=\"_blank\">\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0439 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0449\u0438<\/a>\u00bb <\/strong>[I went to the hospital in an ambulance]. Yes, now I can say that I&#8217;ve been in a Russian ambulance! How cool is that? I think it is pretty cool &#8211; at least now afterwards! I arrived at the hospital together with my friend to find the waiting room filled with other sick people that were all <strong>\u00ab\u0441 \u0432\u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [with things; personal belongings]. I paid little to no attention to this until I was brought to the doctor some three hours later and the first thing he said, without even really looking twice at me, was: <strong>\u00ab\u0418\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043a, \u0432\u044b \u0445\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435 \u0437\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044c \u043e\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u043d\u043e\u0447\u044c?\u00bb <\/strong>[So you want to spend the night here?]. My reaction at this was to scream loudly in panic and beg him to listen to my lungs first, and only after this tell me his sentence. He smiled. He listened to my lungs for a while, nodding to himself slowly as he listened, and then sent me to get them x-rayed. I came back from the x-ray and ended up with another doctor because the whole hospital was in such a chaos that my Russian friend in the end concluded: <strong>\u00ab<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u042d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0444\u0430!\u00bb<\/strong> [&#8220;This is not a country &#8211; this is a catastrophe!&#8221;] The other doctor was a woman and she liked me for some reason and started to talk to me while looking at the x-ray of my lungs. She said that <strong>\u00ab\u043d\u0435\u0442 \u043f\u043d\u0435\u0432\u043c\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [there&#8217;s no pneumonia] on the x-ray, but that this doesn&#8217;t mean that I don&#8217;t still have it. She smiled and added that this is especially possible considering my difficulties breathing and the fact that I&#8217;ve been sick for over a week now. And that&#8217;s how I came to be hospitalized in Russia!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">My friend and another friend, whose father just happens to be <strong>\u00ab\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0440 <a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%A3%D1%80%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D0%B3%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%83%D0%B4%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B2%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B9_%D1%83%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B2%D0%B5%D1%80%D1%81%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5%D1%82\" target=\"_blank\">\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u0433\u043e \u0443\u043d\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/a>\u00bb <\/strong>[the rector of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ural_State_University\" target=\"_blank\">our university<\/a>], got my keys and went to my home to gather together my things for me. I was not allowed to leave the hospital. About an hour later <a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%91%D1%83%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2,_%D0%94%D0%BC%D0%B8%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D0%92%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%B5%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87\" target=\"_blank\">the rector himself<\/a> turned up at the hospital in the middle of the night together with his daughter to hand me a big bag filled with food. They also took my coat and my shoes that I had to give away in order to be officially hospitalized. So I was led into this gloomy room with green walls and a single bed <em>(after the first night I was moved to a double room, but remained alone in it until about two hours before I left on Monday)<\/em> and placed on the bed by a nurse. She put <strong>\u00ab<a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%9A%D0%B0%D0%BF%D0%B5%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%86%D0%B0\" target=\"_blank\">\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intravenous_therapy\" target=\"_blank\">drop counter<\/a>] into the vein on my right arm, but since I was not in such a great mood and really very afraid of where all of this <strong>\u00ab\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [<em>feminine:<\/em> fluid] was going to go once inside my body since I&#8217;m convinced that my veins are already full with my blood and can&#8217;t hold anything more. So I got nervous that my veins would explode and started jumping around and thus the needle shifted and the fluid poured under my skin instead. At half past six the nurse woke me up and said: <strong>\u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span> \u0441\u0434\u0430\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043a\u0440\u043e\u0432\u044c!\u00bb <\/strong>[It is time for a blood test!] Then I started <em>(or simply continued)<\/em> to cry as lingered in the line and trying to be the last one, while I kept repeating over and over again: <strong>\u00ab\u042f \u0445\u043e\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span> \u0434\u043e\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439!\u00bb<\/strong> [I want to go home!] I noticed how another patient, this young, tall and rather broad-shouldered man, also tried to be the last one in the line and kept looking at me strangely. Later in the day he explained to me that he was jealous of me, since he&#8217;s just afraid of hospitals as I am, but I&#8217;m allowed to cry since I&#8217;m <strong>\u00ab\u0436<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0449\u0438\u043d\u0430 \u0438 \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [a woman and small] but the is not because he&#8217;s <strong>\u00ab\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0436\u0447\u0438\u043d\u0430 \u0438 \u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [a man and big]. After we had been united in our fear of the place where we were located against our will we became close friends and wondered the long hallway together. My weekend at the hospital turned out to be a nice rest mostly thanks to him, as a matter of fact. During my first week of being sick I hardly ate anything at all, and due to this I lost a lot of weight. But during the weekend my new friend kept feeding me all sorts of good food and thus I managed to gain back some and regain a lot of energy in the process, too. He turned out to be a real gentleman! When I was there I got a lot of medication and a lot of rest and got to eat a lot and now I&#8217;m feeling much better. Even though the hospital was pretty much in chaos and rather crazy the whole time I was there &#8211; there&#8217;s after all <strong>\u00ab\u044d\u043f\u0438\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [an epidemic] going on right now &#8211; I think the doctors and the nurses did the best they could working under such strained circumstances. <strong>\u00ab\u0412 \u043f\u043e\u043d\u0435\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a \u043c\u0435\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span> \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [on Monday I was discharged from the hospital] and could go home with just a small cough and breathing normally! Life is full of different experiences, and many of them aren&#8217;t really pleasant while we&#8217;re going through them, but in the end that&#8217;s really what they are and that&#8217;s why we need them &#8211; as experiences. Now I can say that I&#8217;ve been <strong>\u00ab\u0432 \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [in a Russian hospital]. What&#8217;s left for me to do in this country?
