Otherwise, by now you\u2019ve probably heard the song one time too many. But as a another well-known (Russian) song goes, \u201c<strong>\u044d\u0445, \u0440\u0430\u0437, \u0434\u0430 \u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span> \u0440\u0430\u0437, \u0434\u0430 \u0435\u0449<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span> \u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e, \u043c\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e \u0440\u0430\u0437!<\/strong>\u201d (once, and once more and many many more times!)<\/p>\n<p>So yes, this is going to be a post with lots of Gangnam Style in it. But we are going to use it to learn more about Russia. Particularly, let\u2019s see how Russians poke fun at themselves and Russian stereotypes through Gangnam Style-based <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (jokes) and <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> (jeering).<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never heard the word <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong>, it is a noun with a meaning that ranges from a fairly benign poking fun at something to rude jeering, although it tends to lean toward the latter. The verb for engaging in <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> is <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong>. Be careful pronouncing both the noun and the verb. The beginning <strong>\u0441\u0442-<\/strong> sounds are all-important as they separate the totally PG-rated <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> and <strong>\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> from the very <strong>\u043d\u0435\u043f\u0435\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> (explicit; lit: not fit to print) words for sexual intercourse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0421\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> is not the same as joking or making fun of something. <strong>\u0421\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> to <strong>\u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b<\/strong> (a joke) is the same as Lady Gaga to Britney Spears. It is provocative, grotesque, and shocking. It\u2019s what standup comedians are especially good at. In short, it\u2019s also great at making fun of things and people as long as it doesn\u2019t cross the line into <strong>\u0433\u043b\u0443\u043c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0413\u043b\u0443\u043c<\/strong> (a sneer) and <strong>\u0433\u043b\u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> (to sneer) are pretty evil. If you\u2019ve ever been humiliated, especially publicly, for the way you look or talk or do things, then you were an object of <strong>\u0433\u043b\u0443\u043c\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (sneering).
