The only way you would not have heard PSY\u2019s \u201cGangnam Style\u201d is if you \u0441 \u041b\u0443\u043d\u044b<\/span> \u0441\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0441\u044c<\/strong>\u00a0(fell off the Moon). Otherwise, by now you\u2019ve probably heard the song one time too many. But as a another well-known (Russian) song goes, \u201c\u044d\u0445, \u0440\u0430\u0437, \u0434\u0430 \u0435\u0449\u0451<\/span> \u0440\u0430\u0437, \u0434\u0430 \u0435\u0449\u0451<\/span> \u043c\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e, \u043c\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e \u0440\u0430\u0437!<\/strong>\u201d (once, and once more and many many more times!)<\/p>\n

So yes, this is going to be a post with lots of Gangnam Style in it. But we are going to use it to learn more about Russia. Particularly, let\u2019s see how Russians poke fun at themselves and Russian stereotypes through Gangnam Style-based \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (jokes) and \u0441\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> (jeering).<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve never heard the word \u0441\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong>, it is a noun with a meaning that ranges from a fairly benign poking fun at something to rude jeering, although it tends to lean toward the latter. The verb for engaging in \u0441\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> is \u0441\u0442\u0435\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong>. Be careful pronouncing both the noun and the verb. The beginning \u0441\u0442-<\/strong> sounds are all-important as they separate the totally PG-rated \u0441\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> and \u0441\u0442\u0435\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> from the very \u043d\u0435\u043f\u0435\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> (explicit; lit: not fit to print) words for sexual intercourse.<\/p>\n

\u0421\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> is not the same as joking or making fun of something. \u0421\u0442\u0451\u0431<\/strong> to \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043b<\/strong> (a joke) is the same as Lady Gaga to Britney Spears. It is provocative, grotesque, and shocking. It\u2019s what standup comedians are especially good at. In short, it\u2019s also great at making fun of things and people as long as it doesn\u2019t cross the line into \u0433\u043b\u0443\u043c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u0413\u043b\u0443\u043c<\/strong> (a sneer) and \u0433\u043b\u0443\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong> (to sneer) are pretty evil. If you\u2019ve ever been humiliated, especially publicly, for the way you look or talk or do things, then you were an object of \u0433\u043b\u0443\u043c\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (sneering). Politically incorrect jokes are often a way \u0433\u043b\u0443\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430\u0434<\/strong> (to sneer at) specific groups of people.<\/p>\n

Plus you get to learn that weasel in Russian is \u0433\u043e\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> although if you wear a \u0448\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u0430 \u0438\u0437 \u0433\u043e\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u044f<\/strong>, you might prefer saying it\u2019s an ermine fur coat.<\/p>\n
