As you can guess, the vocabulary theme for today’s post is the concept of “same” and “different,” and also how one expresses shades of meaning in between, such as “similar” or “reminiscent” or “slightly distinguishable”.<\/p>\n

“The same” isn’t always translated the same…<\/h3>\n

For English speakers, the word “same” can be hard to render properly in Russian, because it has a number of different translations and the choice is highly context-dependent. If you mean “the same as (something already mentioned),” then the construction \u0442\u043e\u0442 \u0436\u0435<\/b> (or \u0442\u043e\u0442 \u0436\u0435 \u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b\u0439<\/b>) is generally suitable. But when “same” implies “one together”, then you can use \u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043d<\/b>. To illustrate:<\/p>\n

Also deriving from \u043e\u0434\u0438\u043d<\/b> is \u043e\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/b>, which means “absolutely the same; identical”. (\u041d\u0435 \u043f\u0443\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0441\u043e \u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u043e\u043c \u00ab\u043e\u0434\u0438\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb<\/b>. — “Don’t confuse it with the Russian word for lonely<\/i>.”)<\/p>\n

The best translation of “different” is also very context-dependent. When you mean “another” or “other than the one already mentioned,” you can use \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0433\u043e\u0439<\/b>. However, when the sense is “various” or “more than two things that are all different,” it’s often better to use \u0440\u0430\u0437\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b> (which is most often encountered in the plural). And sometimes, you can translate “different”‘ by negating<\/i> one of the expressions that signifies “same” — e.g., \u043d\u0435 \u043e\u0434\u0438\u043d\u0430\u043a\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/b> (“not identical”) or \u043d\u0435 \u0442\u043e\u0442 \u0436\u0435 \u0441\u0430\u043c\u044b\u0439, \u043a\u0430\u043a<\/b> (“not the very same as”) or \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/span><\/b> (“not similar”), and so forth. \u0412\u043e\u0442 \u0432\u0430\u043c \u0440\u0430\u0437\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043c\u0435\u0440\u044b (“here are various examples for you”):<\/p>\n

So much for translating the adjective “different.” But what’s the best way to say “differ” or “be different”? In general, you can use the verb \u043e\u0442\u043b\u0438\u0447\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u043e\u0442\u043b\u0438\u0447\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f — which can be followed by \u043e\u0442 \u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e\/\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e to express the persons\/things from which the subject is different, and by \u0447\u0435\u043c (i.e., an instrumental noun) to express the particular quality that distinguishes the subject from others:<\/p>\n

From this particular sense comes the adjective \u043e\u0442\u043b\u0438\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b>, “excellent”:<\/p>\n
