During my last week at Ural State University I had to make a try at passing as many \u00ab\u0437\u0430\u0447\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> as I could<\/a> (plural <\/em>from the word \u00ab\u0437\u0430\u0447\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> meaning [\u2018credit’<\/em>], but here it is used the context of classes for which there are only two possible grades you can receive: \u00ab\u0437\u0430\u0447\u0442\u0435\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018passed’<\/em>] or \u00ab\u043d\u0435\u0437\u0430\u0447\u0442\u0435\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018not passed’<\/em>]. This word comes from the verb \u00ab\u0437\u0430\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018to consider something done’, \u2018to give credit for something’]). This had to be done already now \u00ab\u0432 \u0434\u0435\u043a\u0430\u0431\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [in December] because I will return to Russia only \u00ab\u0432 \u044f\u043d\u0432\u0430\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[in January] and by then the fall semester will be long gone. I tried hard but failed at being completely successful in this – \u00ab\u044f \u0441\u0434\u0430\u043b\u0430<\/span> \u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u0442\u0440\u0438 \u0438\u0437 \u043f\u044f\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u0437\u0430\u0447\u0451<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0432\u00bb <\/strong>[I only received three out of five credits]. But I say as the Russians would: \u00ab\u041b\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e!\u00bb<\/strong> [all right, okay, fine, good; fair enough!]. \u00a0My last week in the country coincided with my first week after recovering from sickness, thus involved seeing \u00ab\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448\u043e<\/span>\u0435 \u043a\u043e\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [a large quantity of friends] as well as consuming \u00ab\u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448\u043e<\/span>\u0435 \u043a\u043e\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u043f\u0438\u0442\u044c\u044f<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[a large quantity of drinks, quencher, beverages] – yes, occasionally people in Russia (and not merely Russians!)<\/em> drink. In other words, during my last week \u00ab\u044f \u0431\u044b\u043b\u0430<\/span> \u0437\u0430\u043d\u044f\u0442\u0430<\/span> \u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u043c\u0438 \u0434\u0435\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [I was busy\/occupied with important things] and incapable to get around to blogging about grammar (this said doesn’t mean I don’t have lots of ideas for such posts!)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Yesterday I woke up – \u00ab\u0432 \u0428\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [in Sweden], mind you – and thought to myself: \u00ab\u041d\u0430\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0431\u044b \u043c\u043d\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442 \u043f\u0440\u043e \u043a\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u044e-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c \u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c \u0438\u0437 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0438 \u0441\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044f!\u00bb<\/strong> [Why not write a post about some kind of news story from Russia today!] Already last week did I start thinking about writing a few words here about this interesting piece of news from Saint Petersburg: \u00ab\u0412 \u0421\u0430\u043d\u043a\u0442-\u041f\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0433\u0435 \u043e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u0441\u044f \u0442\u0435\u043c\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043e\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c \u043f\u043e \u0424. \u0414\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443\u00bb<\/a> <\/strong>[In Saint Petersburg a Dostoevsky-themed hotel has opened]. But as I was browsing through Russian news sites on Sunday morning, I came across another news story that touched me to tears both because is it a great tragedy, but also it hit close to home for me (I have lived so many years \u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u0423\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [in the Urals] now that I consider it home)<\/em>: \u00ab\u041f\u043e\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u0440 \u0432 \u043d\u043e\u0447\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c \u043a\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u0435 \u0432 \u041f\u0435\u0440\u043c\u0438<\/span>: 112 (\u0441\u0442\u043e \u0434\u0432\u0435\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u044c) \u043f\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u0448\u0438\u0445, \u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u0435 130 (\u0441\u0442\u0430 \u0442\u0440\u0438\u0434\u0446\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>) \u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u043d\u044b\u0445\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [A fire in a night club in Perm: 112 lost, more than 130 wounded]. However, I was both relieved and glad when I saw how fast and firm high officials in the Russian government reacted to this terrible accident. Almost straight away you could read that \u00ab\u041f\u0440\u0435\u0437\u0438\u0434\u0435\u043d\u0442 \u043e\u0431\u044a\u044f\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043b 7 (\u0441\u0435\u0434\u044c\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e) \u0434\u0435\u043a\u0430\u0431\u0440\u044f<\/span> \u0434\u043d\u0451\u043c \u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0443\u0440\u0430\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [The president declared the 7th<\/sup> of December a national day of mourning].<\/p>\n
