Here in the Washington DC area, \u0432\u0435\u0441\u043d\u0430<\/span> \u043d\u0435\u043c\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e \u043e\u043f\u043e\u0437\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u0432 \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c \u0433\u043e\u0434\u0443<\/span><\/b> (spring was a little late this year) — I mean, we were still having a steady spell of \u043d\u0435\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u0435<\/b><\/a> (chilly wet weather) right through the end of March, followed by several unpleasantly \u0437\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u043d\u044be \u043d\u043e\u0447\u0438<\/b> (sultry hot) nights in April. \u0410 \u0442\u0435\u043f\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0434\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span> \u0441\u043e\u0432\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u043c \u043f\u0440\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u043e<\/b> (“but now it’s quite pleasant outdoors”) — \u0432\u0435\u0437\u0434\u0435<\/span> \u0434\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u044c\u044f \u0440\u0430\u0441\u0446\u0432\u0435\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438, \u043f\u0447\u0451\u043b\u044b \u0436\u0443\u0436\u0436\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442<\/b>, (“everywhere trees have blossomed and honeybees are buzzing”), and in general nature has begun its annual \u0431\u043b*\u0434\u043e\u0445\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/b> (a very rude<\/i> word for “spring fever” deriving from the so-called “fourth whale of Russian obscenity”<\/a>, but one that I can’t help quoting because it delightfully puns on \u043b\u0435\u0434\u043e\u0445\u043e<\/span>\u0434<\/b>, “the spring break-up of ice on frozen rivers.”)<\/p>\n

Anyway, the arrival of spring traditionally means, of course: \u043f\u043e\u0440\u0430<\/span> \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0442\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0443\u044e \u0443\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0443 \u0432 \u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u0430\u0442\u0435<\/b> (“time to do some thorough cleaning inside”).<\/p>\n

Here’s my simple guide to make it much easier, but first let’s look at a few key verbs related to housecleaning:<\/p>\n

The verb \u0443\u0431\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0443\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/b>, at the most basic level, means “to take away,” but when followed by a noun such as \u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u0430\u0442\u0430<\/b> (“room”) or \u043f\u043e\u043c\u0435\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/b> (“premises, living quarters”) it can be translated as “tidy up, clean up”. The corresponding noun for the “act of tidying” is \u0443\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0430<\/b>. The perfective verb, by the way, conjugates just like the root verb \u0431\u0440\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/b>, “to take” — thus, \u044f \u0443\u0431\u0435\u0440\u0443<\/span>, \u0442\u044b \u0443\u0431\u0435\u0440\u0451\u0448\u044c…<\/b><\/p>\n

While \u0443\u0431\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0443\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/b> means “to clean” in the sense of \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u0432 \u043f\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u043a<\/b> (“to put in order; make neat and tidy’), if the emphasis is on the removal of dirt\/soil\/filth, then the verb you need is \u043e\u0442\u0447\u0438\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u043e\u0442\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/b>. The perfective is one of those countless \u00ab\u0438\u00bb<\/b>-conjugation verbs that has a consonant mutation only in the first person singular — so it’s \u044f \u043e\u0442\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0449\u0443<\/b>, but \u0442\u044b \u043e\u0442\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0448\u044c<\/b>, and so forth. And, incidentally, since the perfective is stem-stressed, you might assume that the imperative forms are \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span>, \u043e\u0442\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u00bb<\/b>, but instead, it’s \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>, \u043e\u0442\u0447\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u00bb<\/b> — do you know why<\/span>? Another thing about this verb: one doesn’t clean the dirt from the item; one cleans the item from the dirt! Thus:<\/p>\n

The verbs \u0441\u0442\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/b> and \u0432\u044b\u0442\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0432\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0442\u044c<\/b> can both mean “to wipe away, wipe off (dirt from a surface)”, although \u0441\u0442\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/b><\/span> also has the important meaning “to launder clothes.” (Hence \u0441\u0442\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043c\u0430\u0448\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0430<\/b>, “clothes-washing machine”.)<\/p>\n

The thing one sweeps with is a \u043c\u0435\u0442\u043b\u0430<\/span><\/b>, “broom”, and you can either \u043c\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b<\/b> (“sweep the floor”) or \u043c\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u0441\u043e\u0440\/\u043f\u044b\u043b\u044c\/\u0433\u0440\u044f\u0437\u044c \u0441 \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0430<\/b> (“sweep the rubbish\/dust\/dirt from the floor”).<\/p>\n

So, with those verbs in mind, let’s do some spring cleaning!<\/p>\n

Everyone knows: \u0421\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u0432\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0442\u044c \u043f\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u044c \u0441 \u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0431\u0435\u043b\u0438, \u043f\u043e\u043b\u043a\u0438, \u0438 \u0442.\u043f., \u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043c \u043f\u044b\u043b\u0435\u0441\u043e\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u043e\u043b<\/b> (“first dust the furniture, shelves, etc.; then vacuum the floor”). So the first step:<\/p>\n

(1) Get a bunch of old \u0442\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u043f\u043a\u0438<\/b>, “rags”, along with a mild \u0440\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0440 \u043d\u0430\u0448\u0430\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0441\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0430 \u0432 \u0432\u043e\u0434\u0435<\/span><\/b> (“solution of ammonia in water”).<\/p>\n

(2) Realize that before dusting, you should probably \u0443\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0432\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0440\u0430\u043d\u043d\u0443\u044e \u043e\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u0443<\/b> (“clear away the laundered clothing”), \u043a\u043e\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0430\u044f \u0443\u0436\u0435<\/span> \u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span> \u0434\u043d\u044f<\/span> \u043b\u0435\u0436\u0430\u0442 \u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0439<\/b> (“which for three days already has been lying in a heap”) on the half of the bed you don’t sleep on. Plus, you can scrub the cage with bleach while you’re showering.<\/p>\n
