At least \u00ab\u0432 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [in Russia] and at least \u00ab\u0434\u043e 10 (\u0434\u0435\u0441\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e) \u044f\u043d\u0432\u0430\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [until the 10th of January] it is true that \u00ab\u0432\u0441\u0435 \u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [everybody’s on holiday]. Even though there was much talk in 2009 about finally abolishing those ten days that every Russian gets off in the beginning of every year \u00ab\u0438\u0437-\u0437\u0430 \u044d\u043a\u043e\u043d\u043e\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u043a\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0441\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [due to the economic crisis], nothing has yet changed. This means that the traditional treat to the Russian people (but not necessarily such a delight for the Russian economy)<\/a> <\/em>remains and is still known by most as \u00ab\u043f\u044c\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043d\u0435\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018the drunken week’]. At this time of the year in Russia it’s not business as usual but one big, long \u00ab\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [rest, repose, relaxation; recreation; refreshment; comfort<\/a>] for everyone. At least \u00ab\u0434\u043e \u043f\u043e\u043d\u0435\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [until Monday] anyway… But what to do with all this \u00ab\u0441\u0432\u043e\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0432\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [free time]? many Russians find themselves wondering somewhere in between all the official holidays that\u00a0need to be\u00a0properly celebrated with family and friends during these days. Obviously the 1st<\/sup> of January is largely taken up by tending to one’s \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0445\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [hangover], and just as obvious is it for \u00ab\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u0440\u0430\u0432\u043e\u0441\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0445\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [Russian Orthodox Christians] that the 7th<\/sup> of January will be devoted to celebrating \u00ab\u0420\u043e\u0436\u0434\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e<\/span> \u0425\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u00bb <\/strong>[Christmas]. That’s \u00ab\u0434\u0432\u0430 \u0434\u043d\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [two days]. Let’s say you’ll also need one day to prepare for Orthodox Christmas. But this still means that you only keep yourself busy for \u00ab\u0442\u0440\u0438 \u0434\u043d\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [three days] out of ten… \u00ab\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c?\u00bb<\/strong> [What to do?] Well, how about simply using this time to \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [repose, rest, relax; (be on)<\/em> holiday, vacation<\/a>]? Once you’ve reached the conclusion that you agree with the usage of this verb in this context, then suddenly another question arises: \u00ab\u043a\u0430\u043a \u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c?\u00bb<\/strong> [how to repose, rest, relax; (be on)<\/em> holiday, vacation?] Let’s have a look…<\/p>\n

Why not do like \u00ab\u041c\u0435\u0434\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0432 \u0438 \u041f\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043d\u00bb<\/strong> [Medvedev and Putin] did during the first days in January <\/a>and \u00ab\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u043b\u044b<\/span>\u0436\u0430\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [go skiing]? After all, it is \u00ab\u0437\u0438\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [winter] and most of Russia is covered in snow, though not especially hilly in many areas… This type of \u00ab\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [rest, repose, relaxation; recreation; refreshment; comfort] is known as<\/em> <\/em>\u00ab\u0430\u043a\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439\u00bb <\/em><\/strong>[energetic, dynamic, active] in Russia.<\/em><\/p>\n

Here you have another type of \u00ab\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u00bb<\/strong>. This kind of \u2018rest’ is easy to recreate in the privacy of your own home because all you need is to \u00ab\u0441\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u00bb <\/strong>[gather together friends] and \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u043a\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> [set the table]. Then everything is ready for you to \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0432\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u044f \u0432 \u0432\u0435\u0441\u0451<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0439 \u043a\u043e\u043c\u043f\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [spend time in a cheerful company] and – hopefully – \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u043e \u0434\u0443\u0448\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [have a genuine and sincere talk] with someone… Because everybody knows nothing helps you relax as much as interacting with other people!<\/em><\/p>\n

In Russian language (almost)<\/em> each and every verb has both an imperfect ‘version’<\/em> and a perfect \u2018version’<\/em>. In Russian this is not known as ‘version’<\/em> at all, but properly named \u00ab\u0432\u0438\u0434<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [aspect<\/a>]. All Russian verbs (almost)<\/em> have both \u00ab\u043d\u0435\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0432\u0438\u0434\u00bb<\/strong> [imperfect aspect] and \u00ab\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0448\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0432\u0438\u0434\u00bb <\/strong>[perfect aspect]. The verb we’re talking about today is \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>in imperfect aspect and \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0434\u043e\u0445\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> in perfect aspect. And the most correct way to \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [repose, rest, relax] should eventually lead to a need to use the perfect \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u0434\u043e\u0445\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb <\/strong>instead, since if not, then no real \u00ab\u0440\u0435\u0437\u0443\u043b\u044c\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u00bb<\/strong> [result, effect, outcome, consequence] has been reached. Generally speaking, the perfect aspect is always about results, whereas imperfect focuses more on \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0446\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u00bb<\/strong> [process; operation; cause; act]. You can say something like \u00ab\u044f \u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u043b \u0443 \u0440\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0435\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [I rested with my parents (or: I spent my vacation at my parents’ house)] first and then explain further by commenting \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0437-\u0437\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u043c\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044b \u044f \u043d\u0435 \u043c\u043e\u0433 \u043e\u0442\u0434\u043e\u0445\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [because of my mother I couldn’t unwind (completely)]. If you go somewhere on holiday every year, then the verb you’ll want to use to express this is imperfect: \u00ab\u041a\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u0434\u044b\u043c \u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u043c \u043c\u044b \u043e\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u043c \u0432 \u0421\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [Every summer we spend the holiday in Sochi]. But if you’re really tired and stressed and feel like you just need to take a day to yourself then you’ll want to make use of the perfect aspect instead: \u00ab\u041c\u043d\u0435 \u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e \u043e\u0442\u0434\u043e\u0445\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u044c!\u00bb<\/strong> [I need to rest, repose; unwind, relax!]<\/p>\n

A third way – and very funny way – to use all of this \u00ab\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> is to watch something good, be it a movie or a show, in the movies, on TV or on youtube. Why not have a look at animated \u00ab\u041c\u0435\u0434\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0432 \u0438 \u041f\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u0438\u043d\u00bb <\/strong>[Medvedev and Putin] sing and dance into 2010<\/a>?
