Even if you don’t know the words<\/span>, anyone who’s ever seen an old Bugs Bunny cartoon will recognize the seven-note melody of “Shave and a haircut…” — it’s classically used as a musical accompaniment to punctuate the end of a joke.<\/p>\n

Before we get to the specific vocabulary about cutting hair and other things that a barber does, let’s take a quick look at the very last word in the punchline, since the joke doesn’t make sense without it! \u0425\u0430\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0432\u0430<\/b> is a somewhat slangy term meaning “a freebie,” and it’s typically used in the expression \u043d\u0430 \u0445\u0430\u043b\u044f<\/span>\u0432\u0443<\/b>, which is similar to the English “on the house”:<\/p>\n

That covers some of the Russian equivalents for nouns like “hairdo” and “razor”, but in order to say “I forgot to shave this morning!” or “How much do you charge to trim a woman’s hair, no styling?”, you’ll need some basic verbs.<\/p>\n

First, there’s \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0447\u044c<\/b>, which can mean “to cut someone’s hair” (\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0447\u044c \u0432\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0441\u044b \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443\u0434\u044c<\/b>) or “to give someone a haircut” (\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0447\u044c \u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443\u0434\u044c<\/b>), depending on the construction you use. A synonymous phrase is \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0436\u043a\u0443 \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span>-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443\u0434\u044c<\/b>, literally “do a haircut for someone”. In any case, it suggests a relatively simple cut-and-trim without a lot of fancy styling. As far as I know, the most commonly used perfective is \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u044c<\/b> (same conjugation as above), though sometimes you might run across \u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u044c<\/b> or \u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u044c<\/b>. But the prefix \u043f\u043e\u0434-<\/b> can imply “just a little bit; not too much” — which is, of course, what one often says after sitting down in a barber’s chair!<\/p>\n

Attaching the so-called “reflexive” -\u0441\u044f<\/b> to \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438\u0447\u044c<\/b> will usually give the meaning “to have your hair cut by someone else”. If you actually cut your own<\/i> hair and you want to make this clear, you could use a \u0441\u0430\u043c(\u0430)\/\u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/b> type of construction together with the phrase \u0441\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0436\u043a\u0443<\/b>, like so:<\/p>\n

As with \u0431\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c(\u0441\u044f)<\/b>, the combing\/brushing verbs have -\u0441\u044f<\/b> forms that are truly reflexive.
