A couple weeks ago, we looked at some basic “emotion” terms in Russian — how to express that you’re “Feeling Glad, Sad, or Mad.” This time, we’ll round out that list with a few more feelings. To continue the rhyming theme, let’s talk about how to say, um…<\/p>\n

“Feelin’ Bad,
\nOr Like a Cad,
\nOr a Trifle Ad-
\n-dled…”<\/h3>\n

Okay, so I’m out of good rhymes. But anyway, in the previous post I mentioned the verb \u0438\u0441\u043f\u044b\u0442\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\/\u0438\u0441\u043f\u044b\u0442\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/b>, “to experience,” as a rather generic way to express that one feels a particular emotion — \u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span> \u0438\u0441\u043f\u044b<\/span>\u0442\u044b\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0430 \u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/b>, “She experienced joy.” The verb \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/b>, “to suffer,” is also fairly generic in that it can describe \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/b>, “suffering”, of many different kinds, both emotional and physical. The cause of the suffering is often rendered with \u043e\u0442 \u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e<\/span>-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443\u0434\u044c<\/b> (genitive), as in \u0420\u0435\u0431\u0451\u043d\u043e\u043a \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u043e\u0442 \u043e\u0434\u0438\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430<\/b>, “The child suffers from loneliness.” It can also be expressed with \u0447\u0435<\/span>\u043c-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443\u0434\u044c<\/b> (instrumental), especially when talking about physical ailments:<\/p>\n

Colloquially, by the way, you can shorten this to \u041e<\/span>\u043d \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u0434\u0430\u0432\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u043c<\/b> — it’ll be perfectly well understood that \u0434\u0430\u0432\u043b\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/b>, “pressure,” here means hypertension of the blood, in the same way that “The child has a temperature<\/i>” actually means “He’s got a fever.”<\/p>\n

And now let’s consider some specific emotions that a person can “suffer from”:<\/p>\n

Jealousy and Envy<\/h3>\n

\u0420\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/b> is “jealousy” in the sense of \u0441\u043e\u043c\u043d\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0432 \u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/b> (“doubt regarding the faithfulness”) of your spouse, or your lover, or simply your best and closest friend. “To be jealous” in this sense is \u0440\u0435\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c (\u044f \u0440\u0435\u0432\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u044e, \u0442\u044b \u0440\u0435\u0432\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u0435\u0448\u044c)<\/b>, which can be used in the construction \u0440\u0435\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span>-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443\u0434\u044c \u043a\u043e \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span>-\u043d\u0438\u0431\u0443\u0434\u044c<\/b>. Normally, the person (spouse\/lover\/BFF) whose fidelity is up for debate goes in the accusative<\/i>, and the actual or suspected “third wheel” is expressed by \u00ab\u043a<\/b> + dative<\/i>\u00bb. For instance:<\/p>\n

\nPasha (Pavel) is jealous because of the friendship between his wife Natasha (Natalya) and their neighbor Dima (Dmitri).
\n[i.e., Pavel suspects that Natalya and Dmitri are cuckolding him, whether this is true or not.]<\/i><\/p>\n

And although “jealous” and “envious” are sometimes used interchangeably in colloquial English, don’t confuse \u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/b> with the noun \u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/b>, which specifically means “envy” about someone else’s luck, prosperity, or god-given talents, and doesn’t imply a real or imagined “love triangle”. The verb form is \u0437\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/b>, and it’s followed by a dative object, whether you mean “to envy someone<\/i>” or “to envy something<\/i> (that someone else possesses)”:<\/p>\n

The corresponding adjective for “envious” is \u0437\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043b\u0438\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/b>, which should be distinguished from \u0437\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b>, “enviable”. Note, however, that the short form \u0437\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/b> can mean “to feel envious” when used with a dative complement. So we might summarize them in a very redundant sentence:<\/p>\n

(But then<\/i> he discovered the Charles Atlas\u2122 bodybuilding method and turned himself into a super-jock in just 15 minutes a day!!)<\/p>\n

Fear<\/h3>\n

Maybe you already know the verb \u0431\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f (\u044f \u0431\u043e\u044e<\/span>\u0441\u044c, \u0442\u044b \u0431\u043e\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u044c\u0441\u044f)<\/b>, which means “to fear, be afraid of” — with the person or thing you fear in the genitive (\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e-\u043d.\/\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e-\u043d.<\/b>). You can also follow it with an infinitive to express that you’re afraid to perform an action:<\/p>\n

When used in the third person after a subject referring to inanimate substances and items (iron, silk fabric, cheese, mobile phones, etc.), \u0431\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e-\u043d.<\/b> can have the colloquial meaning “to be easily ruined by; to be vulnerable to”:<\/p>\n

\u041c\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u044c \u0431\u043e\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0441\u043e\u043b\u0451\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u0432\u043e\u0434\u044b<\/span>.<\/b>
\nCopper isn’t saltwater-proof.<\/p>\n

The transitive verb \u043f\u0443\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0438\u0441\u043f\u0443\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/b> means “to frighten someone”, and when you add the reflexive -\u0441\u044f<\/b> the meaning becomes “to be afraid.” But while \u0431\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/b> tends to express a general<\/i> fear of something, \u043f\u0443\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u0438\u0441\u043f\u0443\u0433\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e-\u043d.\/\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e-\u043d.<\/b> can imply that you were once frightened by someone\/something (in the genitive) on a particular occasion. Thus, there’s the familiar proverb:<\/p>\n

Finally, the noun \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0445<\/b> means “fear,” and the adjective \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430\u0448\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b> (“dreadful; frightening; scary”) can be used in the neuter short form with the meaning “to feel afraid” — \u041c\u043d\u0435<\/span> \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u043d\u043e!<\/b>, “I was really scared!”<\/p>\n

Shame and Embarrassment<\/h3>\n

There are a number of useful verbs relating to the general concept of \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434<\/b>, “shame” — for example, \u043e\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0440\u0431\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/b> (“to deliberately insult”) and \u0443\u043d\u0438\u0437\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/b> (“to humiliate”) both came together in the title of Dostoevsky’s novel \u0423\u043d\u0438\u0436\u0435\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0438 \u041e\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0440\u0431\u043b\u0451\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/i>.<\/p>\n

But the most basic verb is \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u043f\u0440\u0438\u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c (\u044f \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0436\u0443<\/span>, \u0442\u044b \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u044c) + \u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e-\u043d.\/\u0447\u0442\u043e-\u043d.<\/b>, meaning “to shame someone; to scold for shameful behavior”:<\/p>\n

The correspending reflexive, \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/b> is “to feel shame,” and when followed by \u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e-\u043d.\/\u0447\u0435\u0433\u043e-\u043d.<\/b> (genitive), it means to be ashamed of someone\/something:<\/p>\n

I’m a little ashamed of my fellow countrymen (= “their behavior embarrasses me”).<\/p>\n

The derived adjective \u0441\u0442\u044b<\/span>\u0434\u043b\u0438\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/b> means “filled with shame” or “ashamed looking”, while \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/b> is “worthy of shame; scandalous.” And the short form \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/b> is used with great frequency in constructions like \u0412\u0430\u043c \u043d\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434\u043d\u043e!<\/b>, “Shame on you!” (Literally, “Don’t you feel ashamed?!”)<\/p>\n

While \u0441\u0442\u044b\u0434<\/b> is “shame,” \u0441\u043c\u0443\u0449\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/b> is a little milder — closer to “embarrassment.” The transitive verb \u0441\u043c\u0443\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0441\u043c\u0443\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c (\u044f \u0441\u043c\u0443\u0449\u0443<\/span>, \u0442\u044b \u0441\u043c\u0443\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0448\u044c…)<\/b> means “to embarrass”:<\/p>\n

Even milder, perhaps, is \u0441\u0442\u0435\u0441\u043d\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0441\u043d\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/b>, which simply means to feel a sense of \u0441\u0442\u0435\u0441\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/b>, “inhibition; shyness”:<\/p>\n

Confusion and Puzzlement<\/h3>\n

“To feel confused” is not necessarily easy to translate into Russian, because it’s so context-dependent. One verb that sometimes works is the imperfective \u0437\u0430\u0431\u043b\u0443\u0436\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/b>, “to be mistaken.” So \u0412\u044b, \u043f\u043e-\u043c\u043e\u0435\u043c\u0443, \u043d\u0430\u0431\u043b\u0443\u0436\u0434\u0430\u0435\u0442\u0435\u0441\u044c<\/b> can express “You seem to be confused.” (Just don’t get this mixed up with the perfective \u0437\u0430\u0431\u043b\u0443\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f (\u044f \u0437\u0430\u0431\u043b\u0443\u0436\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u044c, \u0442\u044b \u0437\u0430\u0431\u043b\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0438\u0448\u044c\u0441\u044f)<\/b>, which implies that someone has gotten physically lost, as in a dark forest or a \u043b\u0430\u0431\u0438\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0442<\/b>.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, \u0440\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0435\u0440\u044f\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/b> (perfective) means “to feel mentally lost, puzzled, confused”:<\/p>\n
