But did you know that<strong> \u043a\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (crocodiles) are also very popular in Russia? Don\u2019t believe me? Back in 1582 Russian <strong>\u043b\u0435\u0442\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0446\u044b<\/strong> (chroniclers) mentioned an appearance of crocodiles near the city of Pskov. But that\u2019s all ancient history. It\u2019s time to meet Russia\u2019s three best-known crocodiles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041a\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0434\u0438\u043b \u0413\u0435\u043d\u0430 &#8211; Gena, the gentle Crocodile<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Arguably, the most famous of Russian crocodiles is the friendly, gentle and highly melancholic Gena the Crocodile. Some might say that he\u2019s a Robin to Cheburashka\u2019s Batman, or \u00a0a Chewbacca to Che\u2019s Han Solo, in short &#8211; just <strong>\u0432\u0442\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u0441\u043a\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043f\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (a sidekick). That\u2019s <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0447\u0435\u043f\u0443\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (total nonsense)! Even adults know that<strong> \u043a \u0441\u043e\u0436\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044c\u044e \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c \u0440\u043e\u0436\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044c\u044f \u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043a\u043e \u0440\u0430\u0437 \u0432 \u0433\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span><\/strong> (unfortunately, a birthday comes only once a year)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8211; has several <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (monuments) in his honor (although that&#8217;s not something mentioned in the cartoon)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>\u0411\u0435\u0437\u044b\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b \u0427\u0443\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e &#8211; Chukovsky\u2019s nameless hero (or villain)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Russian Dr. Seuss, <strong>\u041a\u043e\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u0427\u0443\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky) frequently mentioned crocodiles in his work. Yet he never named them. Which is convenient because we can think of them as one character who<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; is married with children. Even though the wife also remains nameless, the kids names are <strong>\u0422\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0430, \u041a\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0430 and \u041b\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0451<\/span>\u0448\u0430<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8211; loves leisure walks around St. Petersburg<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8211; speaks Turkish<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8211; loves to eat <strong>\u0433\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0438<\/strong>\u00a0(a kind of rubber overshoes or crocs) like the ones in the poster above<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8211; also loves to eat sponges, small dogs, small children, evil guys, good guys, and the Sun<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8211; has been deported to his native Nile at least once for eating some of the above<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8211; is a friend of <strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0440 \u0410\u0439\u0431\u043e\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442<\/strong>, a pediatrician\/veterinarian\/doctor-without-borders whose name can be translated as Dr. Ouch, and <strong>\u041c\u043e\u0439\u0434\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0440<\/strong>, a talking vanity with a \u201ccleanliness is godliness\u201d agenda whose name translates as Scrub-until-holes-appear<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8211; had several <strong>\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u044f\u0442\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/strong> in his honor. While none survive to this day, they were featured in at least 3 blockbuster movies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0416\u0443\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b \u041a\u0440\u043e\u043a\u043e\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b &#8211; The only croc that bit&#8230; with satire<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing how this <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u043a\u0438\u0439 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044e<\/span>\u043c\u043e\u0440<\/strong> (caustic humor) of 30+ years ago is still amazingly relevant (with some minor adjustments). The caption reads &#8220;Sergeant, beat the main articles of our Constitution into the heads of the protesters&#8221; and the batons have words &#8220;freedom of the press&#8221;, &#8220;freedom of speech&#8221;, &#8220;freedom of assembly&#8221;, etc on them.<\/p>\n<p>This particular crocodile is not even an animal. Instead, it\u2019s <strong>\u0436\u0443\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b<\/strong> (a magazine) that began its life in 1922. It sputtered out of existence sometime in 2006-2008. In its heyday, it was one of the most popular print publications. Works of quite a few famous writers, poets and caricaturists were printed in this magazine over the years. If you are interested, you can find most of the <strong>\u0430\u0440\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432<\/strong> (archive) online. Some of the old caricatures continue to be <strong>\u0437\u043b\u043e\u0431\u043e\u0434\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (topical, current) even today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here, a surgeon asks a nurse about the condition of the patient. In Russian the word <strong>\u0441\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044f<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> means both &#8220;condition&#8221; and &#8220;fortune&#8221;. The nurse replies that the patient&#8217;s wealth is two million dollars.
