To learn lots of Russian words quickly, it\u2019s critical to understand how they are built. And to better understand how Russian words are built and how they change, it is important to learn some most common Russian prefixes and suffixes.<\/p>\n

For example, today\u2019s word is \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435<\/strong>. It is built with the prefix \u0431\u0435\u0437-<\/strong> or \u0431\u0435\u0441-<\/strong> (without). The consonant \u0437<\/strong> changes to \u0441<\/strong> in this prefix if it\u2019s followed by a voiceless consonant. Some other words that use this prefix are<\/p>\n

\u0431\u0435\u0437\u0440\u0430\u0437\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0435<\/strong> – indifference<\/p>\n

\u0431\u0435\u0437\u0437\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> – lawlessness<\/p>\n

\u0431\u0435\u0437\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0433\u043b\u044b\u0439<\/strong> – brainless<\/p>\n

\u0431\u0435\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/strong> – clueless<\/p>\n

\u0431\u0435\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u043a<\/strong> – disarray<\/p>\n

The interesting thing here is you can\u2019t assume that to get the opposite of any of these words all you have to do is to ditch the prefix. It does work with \u0431\u0435\u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439-\u0442\u043e\u043b\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/strong> and \u0431\u0435\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u043a-\u043f\u043e\u0440\u044f<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u043a<\/strong> pair, but not with the rest of them. In the cases of \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0433\u043b\u044b\u0439<\/strong> and \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435<\/strong>, removing \u0431\u0435\u0437-<\/strong> will leave you with something that is not even a word. Talk about \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435!<\/strong><\/p>\n

By the way, what does \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435<\/strong> mean? The root of it is \u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0437<\/strong> (form). \u0411\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435<\/strong> literally means something formless or deformed. Someone exceptionally unattractive, downright ugly, might be called \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (hideous). \u0422\u043e, \u0447\u0442\u043e \u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0441\u043e \u201c\u0421\u043f\u0430\u0440\u0442\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u201d – \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435!<\/strong> – What\u2019s happening with the Spartak ( soccer team) is outrageous!<\/p>\n

\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u044c \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u0438\u0447\u0430\u0442\u044c.<\/strong> – Stop misbehaving.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s the opposite of \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435<\/strong>? If we are talking about ugliness, then its opposite is \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043e\u0442\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (beauty). But things get less definite if we use \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0435<\/strong> to describe \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0437\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u043b<\/strong> (outrage) or some other \u043e\u0442\u0432\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0441\u0438\u0442\u0443\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong>\u00a0(ugly or outrageous situation). So I\u2019d like to suggest the rule of thumb here:<\/p>\n

Think of \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043e\u0431\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> as a stronger word for \u043f\u043b\u043e\u0445\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong>\u00a0(bad). So the opposite is \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (good). Let\u2019s check using a couple of the above examples:<\/p>\n

\u0422\u0430\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0434\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0433\u0438\u0439 \u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0434\u044b\u0445, \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e – \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span><\/strong> – Such extended time off is good.<\/p>\n

\u0422\u0430\u043a \u043e\u0442\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043a \u043b\u044e<\/span>\u0434\u044f\u043c – \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span>!<\/strong> – It is good to treat people this way!<\/p>\n
