I have a friend who works as a bookkeeper during the week and as a landscaper in the evenings and on weekends. Another friend\u2019s side gig is fixing cars. Yet another moonlights as a \u0421\u043d\u0435\u0433\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (Snow Maiden) during the winter holidays in Russia and her husband sticks on a white beard and accompanies her as a \u0414\u0435\u0434 \u041c\u043e\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0437<\/strong> (Grandfather Frost). All of these people have jobs, but also side incomes known as \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Now, the word \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong> is tricky. On one hand it means \u201cmoonlighting\u201d or \u201cside gig\u201d. Then again, its other meaning is \u201cshoddy work\u201d.<\/p>\n

I recently spoke with an elderly Russian lady who recalled the times she worked as a human computer at a large construction organization back in the days before the computers as we know them existed. The pay was not enough to feed the family and \u043e\u043d\u0430<\/span> \u0431\u0440\u0430\u043b\u0430<\/span> \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0443 \u043d\u0430 \u0434\u043e\u043c<\/strong> (she worked from home on side projects) or \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0432\u0430\u043b\u0430<\/strong>. These projects included calculations for some urgent high profile projects, so the quality of her \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong> (side gig) had to be high and not at all \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (shoddy). She simply could not afford to \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0438\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0439 \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0435<\/strong> (to do a poor job with her side gig).<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s see more examples:<\/p>\n

Well, how can you tell which one is it?<\/p>\n

Most of the time it is obvious from the context:<\/p>\n

Other times it\u2019s the adjectives in front of \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong> that will give you a good idea of the meaning:<\/p>\n

\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong> or \u044f<\/span>\u0432\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong> means blatant or obviously shoddy work as in<\/p>\n

\u0414\u0438<\/span>\u043c\u0443 \u0443\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u043b\u0438, \u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span> \u0447\u0442\u043e \u0442\u043e, \u0447\u0442\u043e \u043e\u043d \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u043b \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u043e\u0442\u043a\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0439<\/strong> – Dima was fired because the work he did was blatantly shoddy.<\/p>\n

Then again, if someone says \u041c\u043d\u0435 \u0442\u0443\u0442 \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430 \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0441\u044c<\/strong>, he means he found a fairly easy and quick way to make some money on the side. If this same person then gets paid from his \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong>, goes out and buys a flat-screen TV that doesn\u2019t work well, that\u2019s already the other \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0430<\/strong> (badly made product of shoddy work).<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the word \u0445\u0430\u043b\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0449\u0438\u043a<\/strong>\u00a0 is always negative, meaning “a slacker”:<\/p>\n
