If not, do so now because a) am I to suffer from this ear worm all by myself?! b) it&#8217;s time to forget \u0442\u0432\u0435\u0440\u043a\u0438\u043d\u0433 and c) it&#8217;s now a viral sensation. Lots of great vocabulary today thanks to the YouTube clip of Russian &#8220;police&#8221; singing Daft Punk\u2019s \u201cGet Lucky\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately after the video gathered its first million views, some blogs started saying that it <strong>\u0432\u0437\u043e\u0440\u0432\u0430\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span> \u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> (made a big splash; lit: blew up Internet). I don\u2019t know about such a global claim. But watching the military choir in their parade uniforms with medals sing \u201cI\u2019m up all night to get lucky\u201d might qualify as <strong>\u0432\u0437\u0440\u044b\u0432 \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0433\u0430<\/strong> (mind-blowing experience).<\/p>\n<p>By the way, although the Choir is usually referred to as the Police Choir, it is not. Its official name is<strong> \u0410\u043a\u0430\u0434\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0430\u043d\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0431\u043b\u044c \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0438 \u0438 \u043f\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u0438 \u0412\u0412 \u041c\u0412\u0414 \u0420\u0424<\/strong> which in itself is a mouthful and a <strong>\u0432\u0437\u0440\u044b\u0432 \u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0433\u0430<\/strong>. So let\u2019s get some clarity:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0434\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> (academic) &#8211; \u00a0it&#8217;s an honorific bestowed on the group as a sign of the approval from the highest authorities and a reward for exemplary professionalism and high standards of performance. Another meaning of <strong>\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0434\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/strong> is pertaining to learning as in <strong>\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0434\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0447\u0430\u0441<\/strong> (study hour, 45-50 minutes),<strong> \u0430\u043a\u0430\u0434\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/strong> (a year-long break from studying), <strong>\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0434\u0435\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0438\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441<\/strong> (interest in something, usually not arising from practical need).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>\u0430\u043d\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0431\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (ensemble) &#8211; a group of several musicians or dancers, such as a music band, a choir, a dance company.<strong> \u0410\u043d\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0431\u043b\u044c<\/strong> sounds a whole lot more dignified and grounded in proper musical education than, say, <strong>\u0440\u043e\u043a-\u0433\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u043f\u043f\u0430<\/strong> (rock band). Back in the Soviet days, an officially recognized music group would be designated as <strong>\u0432\u043e\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e-\u0438\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0443\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0430\u043d\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c\u0431\u043b\u044c<\/strong> (vocal-instrumental ensemble) or <strong>\u0412<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0418<\/span>\u0410<\/strong> for short. We can say <strong>\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u0432\u0437\u0434\u043e\u0440 \u043e \u0447\u0451\u043c-\u0442\u043e<\/strong> (lit: to carry on some nonsense about something) or <strong>\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u044b\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u0443 <\/strong>(to tell a tall tale).<\/p>\n<p>And now back to deciphering the name of the choir. It\u2019s time for the alphabet soup that is<strong> \u0412\u0412 \u041c\u0412\u0414 \u0420\u0424<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0420\u0424 &#8211; \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0439\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0424\u0435\u0434\u0435\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong> &#8211; Russian Federation<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u041c\u0412\u0414 &#8211; \u041c\u0438\u043d\u0438\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0442\u0432\u043e \u0418\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u0414\u0435\u043b<\/strong> &#8211; Ministry for Internal Affairs is charged with law enforcement, however several agencies within the ministry perform these duties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0412\u0412 &#8211; \u0412\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0432\u043e\u0439\u0441\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> &#8211; Internal Troops is a National Guard-like force. It does support police, but does not deal with many of the duties and responsibilities that are usually associated with police work.<\/p>\n<p>So these guys are part of the Internal Troops of the Ministry for the Internal Affairs of Russian Federation and are not policemen. But we won\u2019t hold this against them since they did a pretty good job singing <strong>\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0435\u0440<\/strong> (cover) of Daft Punk\u2019s song.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, the Skyfall-singing Army Choir (referenced above) says they <strong>\u043d\u0435 \u043f\u043e\u0439\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0442 \u043f\u043e \u0441\u0442\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c \u043a\u043e\u043b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433<\/strong> and will continue bearing the standard of high musical culture. There is some bad blood between the two choirs. Yep, it\u2019s like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fox.com\/glee\/\" target=\"_blank\">Glee<\/a>, but set in Russian <strong>\u0441\u0438\u043b\u043e\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0440\u0443\u043a\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (defense and law enforcement services) instead of an American high school.<\/p>\n<p>We are going to ignore the tiff and concentrate on the rich vocabulary instead:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0438\u0434\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span> \u043f\u043e \u0441\u0442\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c<\/strong> (to follow in one\u2019s steps) &#8211; could be both a good thing and a bad thing, depending on whose steps are being followed. For example, <strong>\u0441\u044b\u043d \u043f\u043e\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u043b \u043f\u043e \u0441\u0442\u043e\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u043c \u043e\u0442\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (the son followed in his father\u2019s footsteps) is good if the father was <strong>\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0440<\/strong>, but terrible if the dad was <strong>\u0431\u0430\u043d\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442<\/strong>. In the former situation, we proudly exclaim <strong>\u043e\u043d \u0432\u0435\u0441\u044c \u0432 \u043e\u0442\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430!<\/span><\/strong> (he takes after his father), while in the latter situation, we might shake heads ruefully and say that <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u043e\u043a\u043e \u043e\u0442 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u044f<\/span>\u0431\u043b\u043e\u043d\u0438 \u043d\u0435\u0434\u0430\u043b\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span> \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u0435\u0442<\/strong> (an apple doesn\u2019t fall far from the tree).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430<\/strong> (colleague) &#8211; this one is too easy, right? So let\u2019s liven it up. How many different colleagues can we have? Well, we can have <strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u0440\u0430\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0435<\/strong> (co-worker), <strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0444<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (fellow professional), <strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u043e\u043f\u043f\u043e\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (fellow opposition member), <strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u0441\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0435<\/strong> (fellow performer), <strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (fellow party member), etc.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, let\u2019s talk about reactions to the Get Lucky video. <strong>\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0438\u0433\u043d\u043e\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0443\u0435\u043c<\/strong> (Let\u2019s ignore) the usual nonsensical YouTube squabble over which country is the best and such. Many Russian-language comments approved of the video, calling the performance <strong>\u0437\u0430\u0436\u0438\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (rousing), <strong>\u044e\u043c\u043e\u0440\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (with a sense of humor). Some said that <strong>\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u043a<\/strong> (video clip) <strong>\u043f\u043e\u0432\u044b\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442 \u043d\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0440\u043e<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (lifts one\u2019s mood) and is <strong>\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u0439<\/strong> (cute). Overall, the reaction has been positive, in keeping with an old adage <strong>\u043b\u0435\u0433\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u043e<\/span> \u043d\u0430 \u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0434\u0446\u0435 \u043e\u0442 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u0438 \u0432\u0435\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u0451<\/span>\u043b\u043e\u0439<\/strong> (a fun song makes one light-hearted).<\/p>\n<p>The Choir director said that in choosing the popular song, the Choir wanted to attract attention of the young generation.
