Somehow coming up with a good-sounding Russian acronym is really hard. Anyway, it is Friday which means \u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0442\u0440\u0430 – \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (tomorrow is a day off) for many of us. What will you be doing?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s very briefly talk about the grammar of \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/strong> (day off from work) and its plural \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u0434\u043d\u0438<\/strong>. Last week there was a question on our Facebook page – \u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u044b \u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0443\u0435\u0442\u0435 \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439?<\/strong> – and a few of our sharp-eyed followers noted the mistake we had made.<\/p>\n

We wanted to know about your plans for the weekend and should\u2019ve used the word \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> since it means \u201cweekend\u201d as in<\/p>\n

\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u044b \u043f\u043b\u0430\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0443\u0435\u0442\u0435 \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0445?<\/strong> – What are your plans for the weekend?<\/p>\n

Of course, if we did just that, we might had drawn some criticism for not asking<\/p>\n

Can you spot the differences between these sentences? So which one should it be?<\/p>\n

First, should we use use \u043d\u0430<\/strong> or \u0432<\/strong>? The good news is you can use both! Either \u0432 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> or \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> is fine. The only difference is in how formal and proper you wish to sound. The proper way is to say \u0432 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> as in<\/p>\n

\u0412 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u043d\u0435\u043c\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e \u043f\u043e\u0445\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u0442<\/strong> – It will get slightly cooler over the weekend<\/p>\n

While \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> is considered more conversational, it is just as correct:<\/p>\n

\u041d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u0432 \u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0432\u0435<\/span> \u0432\u043e\u0437\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u0435\u043d \u0441\u043d\u0435\u0433<\/strong> – Snow is possible in Moscow this weekend<\/p>\n

\u0423<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0446\u0443 \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043a\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u044e\u0442 \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> \u00a0– The street will be closed to traffic this weekend<\/p>\n

\u0411\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0430 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442 \u0432 \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0438 \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> – This weekend grandma will be visiting us<\/p>\n

If you decide to use \u043d\u0430<\/strong>, you can say both \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong> and \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0445<\/strong>. That\u2019s the price you pay for wanting to sound \u0441\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u0432 \u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (informal: one of our own). If you are a fan of an Oxford comma, you might decide to use \u0432<\/strong>. Then your options are few as you can only say \u0432 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435<\/strong>, not \u0432 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0445<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Can you ever say \u0432 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong>? Of course, particularly if you are talking about one day and not an entire weekend:<\/p>\n

\u0413\u0434\u0435 \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u043e \u043a\u0443\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043f\u0443\u0442\u0451\u0432\u043a\u0443 \u0432 \u0441\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0435 \u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0438 \u0432 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439?<\/strong> – Where can one buy a travel package in the middle of the night on a weekend?<\/p>\n

Yes, as in a phrase \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> (to reschedule to a weekend day) as in<\/p>\n

\u0412\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0447\u0443 \u0440\u0435\u0448\u0435\u043d\u043e<\/span> \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span> \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> – It was decided to reschedule the meeting for a weekend)<\/p>\n

You can also use \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0439<\/strong> when you mean “for a weekend” as in<\/p>\n
