When in Moscow it is a rule to go for a stroll \u00ab\u043d\u0430 \u041a\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0439 \u043f\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0449\u0430\u0434\u0438<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [on the Red Square]<\/a>, \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u044e\u0442 \u0432\u0441\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [because everybody does that] \u00ab\u0438 \u0442\u0443\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044b, \u0438 \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0446\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [both tourists and people from the provinces]. \u00ab\u041f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0446\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u00bb<\/strong> means \u2018provincial, backwoodsman; unsophisticated person’. The female version of the word is \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0446\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

When I first started studying Russian language some six years ago nobody ever said \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [because, for]. You didn’t hear it in spoken everyday speech at all just a few years back, \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [because] it was considered \u00ab\u0443\u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0448\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u043e\u044e<\/span>\u0437\u00bb<\/strong> [an outdated, outworn, outmoded conjunction] by everyone. You’d only come across it while reading some Russian 19th<\/sup> century novel, like for example \u00ab\u041f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0438 \u043d\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [“Crime and Punishment”<\/a>] by \u00ab\u0424\u0451<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0440 \u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u0414\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439<\/a>\u00bb <\/strong>[Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky<\/a>], but that was about it. Back then I had to go straight to my old faithful dictionary to find out what exactly \u00ab\u0424\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [‘Fedya’<\/em>, diminutive of Fyodor] had meant by using the strange yet cute little conjunction \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>. The first time I heard \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> pronounced out loud was when my \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u0443<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0440\u0443\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u00bb<\/strong> [(in Russian: scientific) <\/em>academic guidance counselor] here in Yekaterinburg told me an unsettling and upsetting story from his time as a student back in Soviet time. He had received the grade \u00ab\u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [good] instead of \u00ab\u043e\u0442\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u043e\u00bb <\/strong>[excellent] for his \u00ab\u0434\u0438\u043f\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [\u2018graduation project’<\/em>, the equivalent of a Bachelor’s thesis] due to having once in it used \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> instead of the more colloquial and commonly accepted \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span> \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [as, because]. Now things have changed a lot in Russian society since then (not only linguistically as we all know)<\/em>, and \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> is clearly and definitely on its way back!<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u0418<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/a><\/strong> [for, because] is nothing but a petite synonym to the popular conjunctions \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span> \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [as, because] and \u00ab\u0442\u0430\u043a \u043a\u0430\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [as, because, since, being that, syne, inasmuch as, in that], but with one important thing differing it from these two: it creates a \u2018weaker’<\/em> link between two parts of a sentence connected logically with each other. And that’s why you can use \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> both \u00ab\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 \u0437\u0430\u043f\u044f\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [after a comma] as well as \u00ab\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u043b\u0435 \u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [after a dot]. Here’s an illustrative example of this from the above mentioned masterpiece \u00ab\u041f\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0443\u043f\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u0438 \u043d\u0430\u043a\u0430\u0437\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [“Crime and Punishment”] by hands-down the most influential on the 20th<\/sup> century Russian writer \u00ab\u0414\u043e\u0441\u0442\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb <\/strong>[Dostoevsky]:<\/p>\n

When \u00ab\u0432 \u041c\u043e\u0441\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043c \u043c\u0435\u0442\u0440\u043e<\/span><\/a>\u00bb <\/strong>[in the Moscow metro<\/a> (subway, underground railway system)] it is imperative \u00ab\u0441\u043c\u043e\u0442\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0432\u0432\u0435\u0440\u0445\u00bb<\/strong> [to look up] \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e \u0442\u0430\u043c \u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u043d\u044c \u043a\u0440\u0430\u0441\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [because there it is very beautiful]. Not on all stations, of course, but on quite a lot of them – especially in the center…<\/em><\/p>\n

All of the sudden – that’s what it felt like for me anyway – \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> was everywhere! Everyone was saying it! Last fall I started to find it in text-messages from Russian friends all the time. Which is only natural, because \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> only takes up three letters in the text-message whereas you’ll spend an entire ten spelling out the long and complicated \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span> \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>. One could also write the synonym \u00ab\u0442\u0430\u043a \u043a\u0430\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> as \u00ab\u0442. \u043a.\u00bb<\/strong>, but that’s also three letters – the same amount needed for \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>. And let’s face it – \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> sounds a lot better. It sounds educated and a bit fancy (a charm which it will surely loose once it gets too accepted and commonly used)<\/em>. People who know more about this than me says \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> started its return to Russian language by way of \u00ab\u0433\u0430\u0437\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u044b<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [newspaper language] and then through that made the brave crossover into \u00ab\u0440\u0430\u0437\u0433\u043e\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u044b<\/span>\u043a\u00bb<\/strong> [conversational, spoken language]. Honestly, I like \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> very much. It is a conveniently tiny word that’s fast to write and takes little to no time to pronounce. And you can start a sentence with it without looking like a fool – something you’re bound to give the appearance of being if you try beginning a sentence with \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043c\u0443<\/span> \u0447\u0442\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

But far from all Russians are as fond of this new-old word as I am. I asked a good friend of mine what she thought of the return of \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>. She answered: \u00ab\u044f \u043d\u0435\u043d\u0430\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0436\u0443 \u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e!\u00bb<\/strong> [I hate ‘ibo’<\/em>!] Then I asked her why, and she actually used it in her answer… She said: \u00ab\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u043e \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u0441\u0442\u0430\u0440\u043e\u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0441\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e, \u0430 \u0441\u0435\u0439\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0441 \u043e\u043d\u043e<\/span> \u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u043e \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u043e\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[For it used to be an old-fashioned word, but now it is just trendy]. Be that as it may, I still think it is an interesting conjunction worth trying out at least once while learning Russian. Maybe it is just a fad and maybe it’ll go away. But it might as well be here to stay! And that’s why I’ll give the last word to \u00ab\u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430\u0438<\/span>\u043b \u041b\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u043e\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [Mikhail Lermontov<\/a>] and a sentence from the beginning of his splendid novel \u00ab\u0413\u0435\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0435\u0433\u043e \u0432\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0438<\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [“A Hero of Our Time”<\/a>]:<\/p>\n
