One is the <strong>\u0437\u0430\u0433<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0447\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0430\u044f \u0434\u0443\u0448<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (mysterious Russian soul), the one that cannot be understood by mind alone. Another one is <strong>\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043f\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (patience). Yet another one is <strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong> which usually gets translated as resourcefulness, such as shown in this video at the top of the post.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Much of this resourcefulness is explained by a good saying <\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u0433\u043e\u043b\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u043c\u043a\u0438 \u0445\u0438\u0442\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> meaning necessity is the mother of all inventions or, more literally, poverty is crafty. Some believe that the capacity <\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u043d\u0430 \u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0434\u0443\u043c\u043a\u0438<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> (for inventiveness) reached its apogee during Soviet era with its<\/span><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> \u0442\u043e\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u0444\u0438\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0442<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> (across-the-board shortages).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">You can see some of the examples of such <strong>\u043d\u0430\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0447\u0438\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (resourcefulness) on <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.folkforms.ru\/\">this site<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> dedicated to collecting artifacts of <strong>\u043d\u0430\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0434\u0438\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0439\u043d<\/strong> (folk design). That\u2019s because they come from the same word <strong>\u043c\u0435\u043a\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> which means to think or to understand. The word <strong>\u043c\u0435\u043a\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is no longer used. But you can still come across its derivatives:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> &#8211; to figure out, to put two and two together<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>\u043d\u0430\u043c\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> &#8211; to hint at<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>\u043a\u0443\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong> &#8211; to think, to ponder<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Getting back to <strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong>, someone who shows <strong>\u043d\u0430\u0445<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0447\u0438\u0432\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044c<\/strong> (gumption) and can think on their toes is said to possess <strong>\u0441\u043c\u0451\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (and that\u2019s where the adjective <strong>\u0441\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0432\u044b\u0439<\/strong> comes from).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Russians do not have exclusive rights to <strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong>. In fact, if you google this word, you will likely find examples from all over the world. In the US, the classic example of <strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0441\u0442\u044b\u0439 \u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/strong> (a crafty guy) is MacGyver, a secret agent who can solve pretty much any problem with a few pieces of junk, a roll of duct tape and a Swiss Army knife.<\/p>\n<p>Russian MacGyvers are called <strong>\u043a\u0443\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u0438\u043d\u044b<\/strong> (the Kulibins) in honor of <strong>\u0418\u0432<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d \u041a\u0443\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u0431\u0438\u043d<\/strong> (Ivan Kulibin), a famous Russian <a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%9A%D1%83%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%B1%D0%B8%D0%BD,_%D0%98%D0%B2%D0%B0%D0%BD_%D0%9F%D0%B5%D1%82%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87\">mechanic and inventor<\/a> whose name long ago became<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> \u0438<\/span>\u043c\u044f \u043d\u0430\u0440\u0438\u0446<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u043e\u0435<\/strong> (an appelative).<\/p>\n<p>If you search for examples of <strong>\u0441\u043c\u0435\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0430<\/strong> online, in images or videos, you will find some really ingenious ones, but also lots and lots of things that make you go<strong> \u0451-\u043c\u043e\u0451!<\/strong> (darn it!), like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=It0Z1pX_i0U\" target=\"_blank\">this video<\/a> of an attempt at unloading sand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2013\/12\/smekalka2-350x329.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2013\/12\/smekalka2-350x329.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/russian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2013\/12\/smekalka2.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>Russians are proud of many characteristics which they believe they possess as a people.
