This used to be a <strong>\u00ab\u044f\u0437<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u0447\u0435\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043f\u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u043d\u0438\u043a\u00bb <\/strong>[pagan holiday] back before Russia became a Christian country, a celebration of the sun and a way of marking the <strong>\u00ab\u043a\u043e\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0435<\/span>\u0446 \u0437\u0438\u043c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [end of winter] and the <strong>\u00ab\u043d\u0430\u0447<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u0432\u0435\u0441\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [beginning of spring]. Since back in the days this <em>\u2018pagan party&#8217;<\/em> has been made to fit well into the Christian calendar, and is now celebrated during a whole week <strong>\u00ab\u0434\u043e <a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%92%D0%B5%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B9_%D0%BF%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82\" target=\"_blank\">\u0412\u0435\u043b<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0438<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e \u043f\u043e\u0441\u0442<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span><\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [before Lent]. And what exactly do Russians eat before giving up such things as meat, dairy and alcohol for lent? I bet you already knew: <strong>\u00ab<a href=\"http:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%91%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BD%D1%8B\" target=\"_blank\">\u0431\u043b\u0438\u043d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u044b<\/span><\/a>\u00bb<\/strong> [<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pancake\" target=\"_blank\">pancake<\/a>s] of course!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Without a doubt, I am a very lucky girl. One of the reasons for this is because I have a good friend here in Yekaterinburg, <strong>\u00ab\u0421<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [Sasha] &#8211; or <strong>\u00ab\u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0440 \u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447\u00bb<\/strong> [Alexander Alexandrovich] &#8211; who is <strong>\u00ab\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u0430\u0440\u00bb<\/strong> [a cook]. Whenever I come over to his place, I always find him in the kitchen cooking me <strong>\u00ab\u0447\u0442\u043e-\u043d\u0438\u0431<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u044c \u0432\u043a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u043d\u043e\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [something tasty]. \u00a0About a week ago I asked him if he wouldn&#8217;t mind giving me a hand with preparing for <strong>\u00ab\u043f<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044b \u043f\u0440\u043e \u0440<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0443\u044e \u0435\u0434<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u0443<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[the posts about Russian food], and he agreed. Today I have the honor\u00a0of bringing our very first culinary creation to my dear readers&#8217; and fellow Russophiles&#8217; attention!
