With the Winter Olympics in Sochi<\/a> in full swing, I thought the topics of winter sports<\/a> may be worth revisiting. \u0427\u0442\u043e \u0432\u044b \u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u0430\u043b\u0438 \u043d\u0430 \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0445, \u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c?<\/strong> (What did you do over the weekend, dear reader?) Let me tell you what I did, and we can note down some winter sports vocabulary.<\/p>\n

(I went downhill skiing. I don’t own skis, so I rented skis, poles, boots, and a helmet. My husband snowboards, so he rented a snowboard and boots.)<\/p>\n

Here are some key words from this little passage:<\/p>\n

\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u043b\u044b<\/span>\u0436\u0430\u0445<\/strong> – to go skiing<\/p>\n

By default, cross-country skiing is meant. If you want to say downhill, it’s \u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044b\u0445 \u043b\u044b<\/span>\u0436\u0430\u0445<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u041b\u044b<\/span>\u0436\u0438<\/strong> is skis. \u041f\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0438<\/strong> are poles. \u0411\u043e\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0438<\/strong> are boots for both skiing and snowboarding (the boots are naturally different, but the word is the same). The singular is \u0431\u043e\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u043e\u043a<\/strong>.\u00a0 I’m sure you can figure \u0441\u043d\u043e\u0443\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0434<\/strong> out; it can also be referred to as \u0434\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span><\/strong> (board).<\/p>\n

\u0411\u0440\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\/\u0432\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430\u043f\u0440\u043e\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> is to rent (equipment). A synonym is \u0431\u0440\u0430\u0442\u044c\/\u0432\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c \u0432 \u0430\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0443<\/strong>, but that sounds like something you say about larger things like a car or an apartment.<\/p>\n

\u0428\u043b\u0435\u043c<\/strong> is a helmet, and a good saying about renting one is \u0431\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0436\u0451\u043d\u043e\u0433\u043e \u0431\u043e\u0433 \u0431\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0436\u0451\u0442<\/strong> (better safe than sorry).<\/p>\n

As you rent the equipment, you may be asked to leave a \u0437\u0430\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0433<\/strong> (deposit). These words may also come in handy when you want to talk about skiing\/snowboarding:<\/p>\n

\u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0430<\/strong> – trail<\/p>\n

\u0441\u043a\u043b\u043e\u043d<\/strong> – slope<\/p>\n

\u0441\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/strong> – slope\/decline<\/p>\n

\u043f\u043e\u0434\u044a\u0451\u043c\u043d\u0438\u043a<\/strong> – chairlift<\/p>\n

\u043b\u044b\u0436\u043d\u044f<\/span><\/strong> – piste (for cross-country skiing)<\/p>\n

Another popular recreational winter sport is \u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043d\u0430 \u043a\u043e\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/strong> (ice-skating). The verb is \u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u043a\u043e\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0445<\/strong>. The skates are called \u043a\u043e\u043d\u044c\u043a\u0438<\/span><\/strong>, and the ice-rink is called \u043a\u0430\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u043a<\/strong>. \u041b\u0451\u0434<\/strong> is ice, and on ice is \u043d\u0430 \u043b\u044c\u0434\u0443<\/span><\/strong>. Incidentally, \u0417\u0432\u0451\u0437\u0434\u044b \u043d\u0430 \u043b\u044c\u0434\u0443<\/span><\/strong> is also the Russian version of the TV show Stars on Ice.
