I\u2019ve only been with this blog for a few weeks and I\u2019m already breaking \u00ab<\/strong>\u0440\u0430\u0441\u043f\u0438\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [schedule] that Josefina and I planned for this month. I was supposed to tell you how to make a particularly tasty Russian salad. But I feel that, given the time of the year and the fact that many of \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0430<\/span>\u0448\u0438<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [our readers] plan to travel to Russia at some point, there are \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0435\u0435<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0436\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [more important] things to talk about.<\/p>\n

Specifically, I want to talk about how to dress for a Russian winter in order to avoid stern talking-to\u2019s from the ever-present \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [old ladies; lit. grandmothers<\/em>]. But let me back up and say that there are two ways of dealing with \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb.<\/strong> First is \u00ab\u0438\u0433\u043d\u043e\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0438\u0445<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [to ignore their comments]. Second is to bundle up.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In reality, since \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> can\u2019t be outnumbered and have nothing better to do but spend their days \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0443\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [tattling] about you, the only way to avoid their dirty looks and \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043a\u0438\u0435<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043c\u0435\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [barbs] is to bundle up.<\/p>\n

\n

Technically, you can try defending your under-dressed self with the following proverb:<\/p>\n

But I doubt it would help (never helps me when I am being lectured by my own Mom on this subject).<\/p>\n

And if you don\u2019t think this is a serious issue, then read a comment<\/a> from one of this blog\u2019s readers, Kari, who was asking a while back for advice to \u201cfight off the babushkas that invade my private space with their concern over my daughter\u2019s warmth! I tell my husband that just ONE more comment that I am (a bad mom) not dressing my child more enough from Russians in the city and I just may explode!\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

So, here\u2019s a quick primer on how to dress yourself and your child for Russian winters.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041a\u043e\u043b\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [tights] – admittedly, is not the item to be visually inspected by \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [the old ladies], but better be safe than sorry. Warm tights are a must for women and children (of both sexes). Men will have to wear \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u043e\u0434\u0448\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [warm ankle-length\u00a0undergarments that go underneath the pants, hence the name].<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0421\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u0440<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [sweater] – layer it over a shirt, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u043e\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u00bb <\/strong>[a turtleneck sweater], or anything that doesn\u2019t look thick and warm. If you are dressing a child, put a couple of sweaters on.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041d\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0438<\/span><\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [socks] – whether you wear \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [tights] or not, put on a pair of very warm woolen socks. The thick and itchy white or grey hand-knitted ones, made and sold by \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> are the best.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u041f\u0430\u043b\u044c\u0442\u043e<\/span><\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [coat], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0448\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [long fur coat], or \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [jacket] – which one you are going to end up wearing depends largely on your gender and your personal preferences. Generally, however, men do not wear \u00ab<\/strong>\u0448\u0443<\/span>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u00bb.<\/strong> Whatever it is you wear, it has to look very warm, very thick, and very bulky to be \u00ab<\/strong>\u043e\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0440\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [approved] by \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0428\u0430<\/span>\u043f\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [hat] – you might as well stay home and wait for summer if you don\u2019t wear a hat. And when you do put one on, make sure it covers your ears. When choosing a hat for a small child, get the one \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u0432\u044f<\/span>\u0437\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0430\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [with strings that tie under the chin; lit. with the ties<\/em>].<\/p>\n

\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0428\u0430\u0440\u0444<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [scarf] – men can get away with wearing short and fairly thin (think flannel or thin felt) ones also referred to as \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0430\u0448\u043d\u0435<\/span><\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [neckscarf]. These are typically worn over a \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u0440<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [sweater], but underneath \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0430\u043b\u044c\u0442\u043e<\/span><\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [coat] or \u00ab\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u00bb [jacket].<\/p>\n

Children must have their thick wooly scarves tied over their coats. Whether you tie the scarf in the front or in the back depends on the age of your child. Under 5 – tie in the back so that the child doesn\u2019t get a chance to fiddle with the knot. Plus you\u2019ll score some extra points for pulling the thus-tied scarf over the child\u2019s mouth so he or she \u00ab<\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0434\u044b<\/span>\u0448\u0438\u0442<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0445\u043e\u043b\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u043d\u044b\u043c<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0437\u0434\u0443\u0445\u043e\u043c<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [don\u2019t breath the cold air].<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n

\u00ab<\/strong>\u0412\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0436\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [mittens], \u00ab<\/strong>\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [gloves] – remember, \u00ab<\/strong>\u043c\u0443\u0436\u0438\u043a\u0438<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0436\u0435\u043a<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u043d\u0435<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u044f\u0442<\/span>!<\/strong>\u00bb [men don\u2019t wear mittens]. Mittens are generally for children. Again, for some extra approval points, sew the mittens onto a length of elastic ribbon and thread it through the arms of your child\u2019s coat.<\/p>\n

Finally, \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u0430\u043f\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span><\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [boots] – let\u2019s just say, get the warmest boots you can find and you\u2019ll be good to go.\u00a0 <\/span>When selecting boots, think of lots of snow, iced-over sidewalks and possibly long waits for \u00ab<\/strong>\u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [a bus], \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0439\u0431\u0443\u0441<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [a trolleybus] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043c\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u0439<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [tram or streetcar] and you\u2019ll naturally avoid all the high-heeled low-cut no-good fashion nonsense.<\/p>\n

So, let\u2019s say you \u00ab<\/strong>\u0437\u0430\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [bundled up] yourself and your child and are ready to go enjoy the snow – maybe build \u00ab<\/strong>\u0441\u043d\u0435\u0433\u043e\u0432\u0438<\/span>\u043a<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [a snowman] or \u00ab<\/strong>\u043a\u0430\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u043d\u0430<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0430\u0445<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0441<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u043a\u0438<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [sled down a hill]. Here\u2019s the final check before exiting out of your apartment and into \u00ab<\/strong>\u0431\u0430<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0448\u043a\u0438\u043d\u043e<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0435<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>\u0437\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [old lady\u2019s field of vision]:<\/p>\n

If you can easily move your arms or legs, you are likely underdressed. If your child can, without your help, get up to standing from sitting on the floor, he or she is most definitely underdressed. Quickly, put on an extra sweater.<\/p>\n
