Work is a place where we spend at least 8 hours a day, so it can never hurt to learn to talk about it in Russian. By the way, the title literally means, “work is not a wolf (and will not run into the woods),” meaning that you shouldn’t work too hard or too much. The word \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0442\u0430 itself can refer to both a specific job or work to be done in general, sometimes regardless of employment status. So, you can say, “\u042f \u0438\u0449\u0443<\/span> \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443<\/strong>” (I’m looking for a job) or “\u0423 \u043c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span> \u043c\u043d\u043e<\/span>\u0433\u043e \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong>” (I have a lot of work). With this in mind…<\/p>\n

Job Search<\/h2>\n

We’ve already seen \u0438\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443\u00a0<\/strong>(to look for a job). The corresponding process is called \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0438\u0441\u043a \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong>. The result is hopefully \u043d\u0430\u0439\u0442\u0438<\/span><\/strong> \u0440\u0430\u0431<\/strong>\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443 <\/strong>(to find a job). You are probably reading ads (\u043e\u0431\u044a\u044f\u0432\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u044f<\/strong>) or looking online (\u0432 \u0418\u043d\u0442\u0435\u0440\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0435<\/strong>) for any \u0432\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (openings). Your next steps are \u043e\u0442\u043f\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0438\u0442\u044c \u0440\u0435\u0437\u044e\u043c\u0435<\/span><\/strong> (send your resume) or \u0437\u0430\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u0438\u0442\u044c \u0430\u043d\u043a\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0443<\/strong> (fill out an application), if there is one. If the only contact information on the ad is a phone number, you may need to call. \u0410 good opening line is, “\u042f \u0437\u0432\u043e\u043d\u044e<\/span> \u043f\u043e \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0432\u043e\u0434\u0443 \u0432\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u0438\u0438…<\/strong>” + noun in genitive (I’m calling about the position of…).<\/p>\n

If the employer (\u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e\u0442\u043e\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u044c<\/strong>) thinks you are a promising candidate, you may be invited to a \u0441\u043e\u0431\u0435\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (interview). Some positions (\u0434\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0436\u043d\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/strong>) require \u0442\u0435\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (a test). Others may request \u0440\u0435\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (references). Hopefully, you will get hired! \u041f\u0440\u0438\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443, \u0432\u0437\u044f\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443, \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0432 \u0448\u0442\u0430\u0442, \u043d\u0430\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> can all mean “to hire someone.” \u041d\u0430\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong> is mostly used to talk about the hiring from the company’s persepective “\u0424\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u0430 \u043d\u0430\u043d\u044f\u043b\u0430<\/span> \u0441\u043f\u0435\u0446\u0438\u0430\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0430 \u043f\u043e \u041f\u041e<\/strong>” (A company hired a software specialist) as opposed to a candidate’s perspective. So, a candidate would be more likely to say, “\u041c\u0435\u043d\u044f<\/span> \u0432\u0437\u044f<\/span>\u043b\u0438 \u043d\u0430 \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0443<\/strong>” (I was hired).<\/p>\n

Work Schedule<\/h2>\n

Altough most people have a \u043d\u043e\u0440\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/strong> (a 9-5 schedule, more or less), \u0433\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0444\u0438\u043a \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong> (work schedule) may vary greatly.\u00a0 Other schedules exist, such as “\u0441\u0443<\/span>\u0442\u043a\u0438 \u0447\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 \u0434\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0435<\/strong>” (24 hours every 3 days) or “\u0434\u0432\u0430 \u0447\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0437 \u0434\u0432\u0430<\/strong>” (2 days of work–sometimes for 12 hours–followed by 2 days off). Some people also \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430\u044e\u0442 \u0432 \u0432\u0435\u0447\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043d\u044e\u044e\/\u043d\u043e\u0447\u043d\u0443<\/span>\u044e \u0441\u043c\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0443<\/strong> (work the evening\/night shift). Most places get \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0440\u044b<\/span>\u0432 \u043d\u0430 \u043e\u0431\u0435<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> (a lunch break). \u0421\u0443\u0431\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/strong> and \u0432\u043e\u0441\u043a\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u044c\u0435<\/strong> (Saturday and Sunday) are mostly \u0432\u044b\u0445\u043e\u0434\u043d\u044b<\/span>\u0435 \u0434\u043d\u0438<\/strong> (days off), although Saturdays may be \u0440\u0430\u0431\u043e<\/span>\u0447\u0438\u0439 \u0434\u0435\u043d\u044c<\/strong> (a work day) in some organizations.<\/p>\n

Organizational Structure<\/h2>\n

You will most likely have a \u043d\u0430\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a\/\u043d\u0430\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0430<\/strong> (boss) and \u043a\u043e\u043b\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0433\u0438<\/strong> (co-workers). If you are high enough in the hierarchy, you might have \u043f\u043e\u0434\u0447\u0438\u043d\u0451\u043d\u043d\u044b\u0435<\/strong> (subordinate workers). Perhaps your workplace has \u043e\u0442\u0434\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (departments) or even \u0444\u0438\u043b\u0438\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u044b<\/strong> (regional offices).<\/p>\n

Pay<\/h2>\n

In Russia, your salary (\u0437\u0430\u0440\u043f\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/strong>) is normally paid monthly. Hourly pay (\u043f\u043e\u0447\u0430\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u044f \u043e\u043f\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0430<\/strong>) technically exists, but it’s uncommon to talk about wages. \u041e\u043a\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> is your base salary, to which \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0446\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0442\u044b\/\u043a\u043e\u043c\u0438<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (commission) or \u043f\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (bonus) may be added. To give someone a raise is \u043f\u043e\u0432\u044b<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u0442\u044c \u0437\u0430\u0440\u043f\u043b\u0430\u0442\u0443<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Perks and benefits<\/h2>\n

Employers entice prospective employees with a generous \u0441\u043e\u0446\u043f\u0430\u043a\u0435<\/span>\u0442<\/strong> (benefits papckage). That includes governement-mandated \u0431\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0447\u043d\u044b\u0439 [\u043b\u0438\u0441\u0442]<\/strong> (sick leave) and \u043e<\/span>\u0442\u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a<\/strong> (vacation). The duration of the annual vacation is 28 calendar days. Ironically, you will see vacancies list \u043e\u0444\u043e\u0440\u043c\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435 \u043f\u043e \u0422\u041a \u0420\u0424<\/strong> (proper paperwork) as an added perk. TK<\/strong> is \u0422\u0440\u0443\u0434\u043e\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043a\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u043a\u0441<\/strong> (Labor Code). To avoid taxes and other expenses, some employers try to pay their workers “under the table,” which is not only illegal, but also hurts the employee’s record and retirement savings.<\/p>\n

Employment Termination<\/h2>\n

Sadly, sometimes people get fired (to fire – imperf. <\/em>\u0443\u0432\u043e\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong>\/perf. <\/em>\u0443\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0442\u044c<\/strong> + accusative). Sometimes the company is in financial trouble and people are made redundant (\u0441\u043e\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0449\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\/\u0441\u043e\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c<\/strong>). If you are the one quitting, it is called \u0443\u0432\u043e\u043b\u043d\u044f<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f\/\u0443\u0432\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
