Vacation has been covered on this blog more than once, but this subject — and activity — is something I’m ready to revisit at least once a year. First, a post from a couple years ago given a nice overview of the general vacation vocabulary<\/a>. In this post, I would like to concentrate on what, in my experience, is a preferred vacation type for many Russians —\u00a0 namely, the seaside vacation.<\/p>\n

Choose your destination<\/h2>\n

Every summer, thousands of Russians try to \u043f\u043e\u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/strong> (go to the beach). \u041c\u043e\u0440\u0435 is technically the sea as opposed to an ocean, but people don’t usually say \u043f\u043e\u0435\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u043e\u043a\u0435\u0430\u043d, even if that’s the case. I will give the vocabulary as it is used in the travel context, so don’t be alarmed if you see a “weird” Russian word for an English one whose translation you thought you knew.<\/p>\n

\u0422\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (Turkey) is a top vacation destination<\/a> for Russians, followed by \u0415\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u043f\u0435\u0442<\/strong> (Egypt) and \u0413\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong> (Greece). Over 3 million Russian tourists visited Turkey in 2013. This can probably be explained by good value for money and lack of visa restrictions.<\/p>\n

Explore the amenities<\/h2>\n

Part of the reason Turkey and Egypt are so popular with Russian is the fairly high level of service they provide for the money. These countries are known for their all-inclusive resorts (“\u0432\u0441\u0451 \u0432\u043a\u043b\u044e\u0447\u0435\u043d\u043e<\/span>“<\/strong>), where guests don’t need to spend another cent once they set foot on the hotel’s large and often fenced-off premises. Popular food options are \u043f\u043e\u043b\u0443\u043f\u0430\u043d\u0441\u0438\u043e<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (half-board) and \u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043b\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0430\u043d\u0441\u0438\u043e<\/span>\u043d<\/strong> (full board), often with a full buffet (\u0448\u0432\u0435<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u0442\u043e\u043b<\/strong>) for the guests.<\/p>\n

Hotels try to keep their guests entertained with \u0430\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong> — daily athletic and kids’ activities and nightly entertainment by the \u0430\u043d\u0438\u043c\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0440\u044b<\/strong>. It may include \u0430\u043a\u0432\u0430\u0430\u044d\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0438\u043a\u0430<\/strong> (aqua aerobics), \u043a\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u0443\u0440\u0441\u044b<\/strong> (contests), \u0434\u0438\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043a\u0438<\/strong> (dances), etc.<\/p>\n

Other sell points for hotels include \u0432\u0438\u0434 \u043d\u0430 \u043c\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0435<\/strong> (ocean view), \u0431\u0435\u0441\u043f\u043b\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0441\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u0440 \u0438\u0437 \u0430\u044d\u0440\u043e\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0430<\/strong> (free airport transfer), \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0434\u0438\u0446\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0435<\/span>\u0440<\/strong> (AC, which may be a given for Western travelers, but not always so for Russians), and \u044d\u043a\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0438 \u043d\u0430 \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u043c \u044f\u0437\u044b\u043a\u0435<\/span><\/strong> (tours in Russian).<\/p>\n

Book your vacation<\/h2>\n

First and foremost, you need to book (\u0437\u0430\u0431\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c<\/strong>) your trip. This can be done in a number of ways. Some people prefer package deals, so they \u0431\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u0443\u044e\u0442 \u043f\u0443\u0442\u0451\u0432\u043a\u0443<\/strong> (book a package). \u041f\u0443\u0442\u0451\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/strong> may include a combination of things like \u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043b\u0451\u0442<\/strong> (flight), \u043f\u0440\u043e\u0436\u0438\u0432\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\/\u0440\u0430\u0437\u043c\u0435\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (accommodation), \u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0441\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u0440<\/strong> (airport pickup), \u043f\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/strong> (meals), and \u044d\u043a\u0441\u043a\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u0441\u0438\u0438<\/strong> (tours; day trips).<\/p>\n

A synonym for \u043f\u0443\u0442\u0451\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/strong> is \u0442\u0443\u0440<\/strong> (a tour). \u0422\u0443\u0440<\/strong> will most likely involve visiting multiple destinations or, if one destination is involved, a trip to that destination with a specific purpose. Some examples are \u0430\u0432\u0442\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u0443\u0441\u043d\u044b\u0435 \u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (bus tours), where you visit multiple cities on a bus, or \u0448\u043e<\/span>\u043f\u0438\u043d\u0433-\u0442\u0443<\/span>\u0440\u044b<\/strong> (shopping tours), where you take advantage of the lower clothing prices in the US or Italy, as the case may be.<\/p>\n

However, if you prefer to travel independently, you will need to book your hotel (\u0437\u0430\u0431\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043e\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043b\u044c\/\u0433\u043e\u0441\u0442\u0438<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0446\u0443<\/strong>; better still, \u0437\u0430\u0431\u0440\u043e\u043d\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u0440<\/strong> – book a hotel room) and buy your train\/plane tickets (\u043a\u0443\u043f\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0431\u0438\u043b\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u044b<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Get settled in<\/h2>\n

If you haven’t booked airport pickup (\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043d\u0441\u0444\u0435<\/span>\u0440<\/strong>), you may need to \u0435<\/span>\u0445\u0430\u0442\u044c \u043d\u0430 \u0442\u0430\u043a\u0441\u0438<\/span><\/strong> (take a taxi) or \u0434\u043e\u0431\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f \u043d\u0430 \u043e\u0431\u0449\u0435<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0435\u043d\u043d\u043e\u043c \u0442\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0441\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0435<\/strong> (take public transporation). Once you are in the hotel, you will need to check in (\u0437\u0430\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c\u0441\u044f<\/strong>) at the reception (unfirtunately, there is no universally accepted Russian term, and you may hear \u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u043f\u0448\u0435\u043d<\/strong> or even \u0440\u0435\u0446\u0435<\/span>\u043f\u0446\u0438\u044f<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

If there are any issues with the room, you may need to ask the hotel to move you to a different room (\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0435\u0441\u0435\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u044c \u0432 \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0433\u043e<\/span>\u0439 \u043d\u043e<\/span>\u043c\u0435\u0440<\/strong>). Other questions may include missing towels (\u043f\u043e\u043b\u043e\u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0446\u0430<\/strong>), using the pool lounge chairs (\u043b\u0435\u0436\u0430\u043a\u0438<\/span><\/strong>), and the timing of the meals (\u0437\u0430<\/span>\u0432\u0442\u0440\u0430\u043a<\/strong> – breakfast, \u043e\u0431\u0435<\/span>\u0434<\/strong> – lunch, \u0443<\/span>\u0436\u0438\u043d<\/strong> – dinner\/supper).<\/p>\n
