Once upon a time I shared a room for a year \u00ab\u0441 \u044f\u043f\u043e<\/span>\u043d\u043a\u043e\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [with a Japanese girl] and every day she would comment on something in our Russian life by using the adverb \u00ab\u043d\u0435\u043e\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u043d\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [unexpectedly, unawares; at unawares, by surprise; suddenly, all at once; overnight]. Her reaction to almost everything in Russia was \u00ab\u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u043d\u0435\u043e\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u043d\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [this was unexpected]. Some things happened in her opinion even \u00ab\u0441\u043e\u0432\u0441\u0435<\/span>\u043c \u043d\u0435\u043e\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u043d\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> [completely unexpectedly]. The interesting thing about this useful (to some even crucial)<\/em> adverb \u00ab\u043d\u0435\u043e\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u043d\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> in Russian is that it doesn\u2019t have any direct antonym, thus it would be terrible incorrect to say that something was \u2018expected\u2019 <\/em>by using seemingly logical words such as \u00ab\u0436\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>\u00a0 or \u00ab\u043e\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u043d\u043d\u043e\u00bb<\/strong>.\u00a0 There is, however, an almost <\/em>antonym available \u2013 the adverb \u00ab\u043e\u0436\u0438\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u043c\u043e\u00bb<\/strong> made from the adjective \u00ab\u043e\u0436\u0438\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u0435\u043c\u044b\u0439\u00bb<\/strong> [prospective, expected; forthcoming, coming; due, pending]. But it isn\u2019t exactly the same thing, now is it?<\/p>\n

But today\u2019s post is not about that. That was just an introduction to this post and it\u2019s rather \u00ab\u043d\u0435\u043e\u0436\u0438<\/span>\u0434\u0430\u043d\u043d\u0430\u044f \u0442\u0435<\/span>\u043c\u0430\u00bb<\/strong> [unexpected theme; subject]: a Russian poetry quiz! What\u2019s so \u2018unexpected\u2019<\/em> about today\u2019s theme, then? Well, first of all we\u2019ve never had anything like it on the blog before. So maybe \u00ab\u0432\u044b, \u0434\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0433\u0438<\/span>\u0435 \u0447\u0438\u0442\u0430<\/span>\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0438, \u044d<\/span>\u0442\u043e\u0433\u043e \u043d\u0435 \u0436\u0434\u0430<\/span>\u043b\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [you, dear readers, didn’t expect this]. And perhaps \u00ab\u043d\u0435 \u0432\u0441\u0435 \u0442\u0430\u043a \u0445\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0448\u043e<\/span> \u0440\u0430\u0437\u0431\u0438\u0440\u0430<\/span>\u044e\u0442\u0441\u044f \u0432 \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u043f\u043e\u044d<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [not everyone can sort out\/see into\/unpack Russian poetry so well]. But nevertheless, I\u2019m sure most of you have read some of the basic by the classic Russian 19th<\/sup> century poets \u2013 \u00ab\u0441\u0442\u0438\u0445\u0438<\/span> \u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0440\u0430 \u0421\u0435\u0440\u0433\u0435<\/span>\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447\u0430 \u041f\u0443<\/span>\u0448\u043a\u0438\u043d\u0430 \u0438 \u041c\u0438\u0445\u0430\u0438<\/span>\u043b\u0430 \u042e<\/span>\u0440\u0435\u0432\u0438\u0447\u0430 \u041b\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u043c\u043e\u043d\u0442\u043e\u0432\u0430\u00bb <\/strong>[the poetry of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin and Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov]. The Russian Nobel Prize Laureate \u00ab\u0418\u043e<\/span>\u0441\u0438\u0444 \u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430<\/span>\u043d\u0434\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u0411\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0434\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439\u00bb [<\/strong>Joseph Alexandrovich Brodsky] once said: \u00ab\u041f\u043e\u043a\u0430<\/span> \u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442 \u0442\u0430<\/span>\u043a\u043e\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u044b<\/span>\u043a, \u043a\u0430\u043a \u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u0439, \u0442\u043e \u0431\u0443<\/span>\u0434\u0435\u0442 \u043f\u043e\u044d<\/span>\u0437\u0438\u044f\u00bb<\/strong> [As long as there will be a language like Russian, there will be poetry] (note: this is NOT an exact quote in Russian, but quoted from my not-always-impeccable memory)<\/em>. The conclusion must be that if we want to learn Russian language, then we also need to focus on Russian poetry, right? That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do today \u2013 by way of a Russian poetry quiz, to get everyone\u2019s memory working\u2026 Hopefully, that is.<\/p>\n

This idea came to me about a week ago when I couldn\u2019t get the famous quote \u00ab\u0410 \u0441\u0447\u0430<\/span>\u0441\u0442\u044c\u0435 \u0431\u044b<\/span>\u043b\u043e \u0442\u0430\u043a \u0431\u043b\u0438<\/span>\u0437\u043a\u043e?\u00bb <\/strong>[\u201cBut happiness was so close?\u201d] off of my brain. I knew it was from somewhere, but I couldn\u2019t for the longest time figure out from where\u2026 So I decided to sit down and write a poem myself \u2013 \u00ab\u043f\u043e-\u0440\u0443<\/span>\u0441\u0441\u043a\u0438\u00bb<\/strong> [in Russian] \u2013 using as many quotes in it from famous Russian poems as I could possibly fit into it. At times I was forced to put a line or two \u00ab\u043e\u0442 \u0441\u0435\u0431\u044f<\/span>\u00bb<\/strong> [from myself] in it to keep \u00ab\u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0444\u043c\u044b\u00bb<\/strong> [the rhymes] flowing. But I was forced to \u00ab\u043f\u043e\u0436\u0435<\/span>\u0440\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0432\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0438 \u043c\u0435<\/span>\u0442\u0440\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0439, \u0438 \u0440\u0438<\/span>\u0442\u043c\u043e\u043c\u00bb<\/strong> [sacrifice both the metrics and the rhythm] in the end, so I\u2019m afraid this is not \u00ab\u043d\u0430\u0441\u0442\u043e\u044f<\/span>\u0449\u0435\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb <\/strong>[a real poem]. It is simply \u00ab\u043f\u0440\u043e<\/span>\u0431\u043d\u043e\u0435 \u0441\u0442\u0438\u0445\u043e\u0442\u0432\u043e\u0440\u0435<\/span>\u043d\u0438\u0435\u00bb<\/strong> [an experimental poem]. What do I want from you then? I want you to guess first of all which of these numbered lines belong to which Russian poets! Some poets are repeated more than once, so each number equals neither a poet nor a poem (for one poem is quoted twice) <\/em>but a famous phrase. And since I\u2019m a woman, I\u2019ve changed some words to fit my gender; in the original these quotes, of course, are according to the gender of the poet. After the Russian version I will give you my own \u2013 rather poor \u2013 English translation of it. And please remember, this translation is not artistic, but merely literal so that you\u2019ll understand the poem better! Now are you ready to play? (There\u2019ll be TEN hints after the picture, but if you don\u2019t want hints, then don\u2019t read it\u2026 hint!)<\/em><\/p>\n

it is not to go we learn, but to walk.<\/em><\/p>\n

11. Love may still be, in my soul<\/em><\/p>\n

it has not faded yet, 12. like in your hand,<\/em><\/p>\n
